Fire Devastates Manthei Plant

Manthei Veneer's 10,000-square-foot rotary veneer mill in Resort Township, MI has been declared a total loss after burning to the ground on August 8. This is the second time this mill has suffered a disastrous fire, as it burned to the ground about 50 years ago. Manthei, a third-generation, family-owned company, has not yet announced any plans to rebuild. Manthei's spliced face plant remains operational.

HPVA Laboratories® Files With EPA

HPVA Laboratories® joined several trade associations and TPCs in filing clarification requests with the EPA to determine whether CARB-certified producers can label products as EPA-compliant. Seeking to reduce the regulatory burden, HPVA Laboratories® is also asking to allow the use of a TPC’s D6007 small chamber for quality control tests without redundant correlations if the TPC testing has proven equivalence to E1333, and to allow flexibility in the correlation R-value required for very low emitting products, such as hardwood plywood using NAF and ULEF resins.

U.S. Companies Halt Tainted Flooring

A new report outlines the massive illegal timber trade between Papau New Guinea and China and how that illegally-sourced timber ends up in the U.S. market. Several U.S. companies, including Home Legend, have already stopped selling PNG timber. The supply chain is similar to the Russia-China oak trade with parallels to the Lumber Liquidators investigation. Large volumes of illegally-sourced taun wood and more are shipped from PNG to China to be made into flooring, much of which is then shipped to the U.S. Other illegally-sourced PNG timber, particularly lauan, is commonly used as face veneer for plywood, cabinets, and furniture.

Long-Eared Bat: Next Spotted Owl?

The impact of listing the northern spotted owl as a threatened species is still felt in the Pacific NW. Experts have raised concerns about the potential of the Endangered Species Act jeopardizing the forest products industry, as the act requires the protection of threatened species, such as the northern long-eared bat, without considering costs. Michigan, Minnesota, and Wisconsin are currently developing a bat habitat conservation plan, or HCP.
