Adventures in Laser-Cutting

with Sarah at FreeFall Laser

Are you looking for metal laser-cutting but don't know where to start?

Have you worked with a metal laser-cutting company that didn't understand the unique needs of a creative?
The first question most people ask me is, "Do you cut metal?" The answer is: "YES!"

After much searching I now offer metal laser-cutting through an area metal shop--one with the experience and problem-solving skills artists and artisans are looking for.

Wondering why can't I cut metal on my laser cutter? Laser cutters designed to cut materials such as acrylic, wood, and paper are not strong enough to cut metal. When it comes to laser-cutting metal, as well engraving and marking metal (more on these later), industrial machines with different capabilities are needed for each process–and most shops specialize in only one method, making it challenging for individuals to access the technology.

This is where I come in. I will guide you through the process and manage the technical know-how, so you can focus on what is important--your artistry.

Have a project that combines metal laser-cutting with laser-cut wood, acrylic, paper, or fabric? Not a problem. I will coordinate the different processes, so you don't have to work with multiple manufacturers or stress about whether the different materials will fit together.

Before you click away, see below to check out the other metal services I offer.

Have a project idea? I want to hear about it. Let's talk!
Laser-Cutting and Water Jet
aluminum : brass : copper : steel :
stainless steel and more!

Cutting thicknesses: .002" - 9"
(depending on materials and processes)
Laser-Marking with CerMark
Laser-marking is created by first painting a heat-sensitive material (CerMark) onto the metal. When the laser beam then passes over, the material turns black and adheres to the metal.
Laser-Engraving
Diamond-engraving and
laser-engraving with acid darkening

Laser-Marking Anodized Aluminum
This type of laser-marking occurs when the laser beam vaporizes the coating on the aluminum revealing the surface below.
How is laser-marking different from laser-engraving? Laser-marking changes the surface color of the metal. It is a change that can be seen but not felt. Laser-engraving vaporizes material at varying depths, leaving a physical depression that can be felt. Laser-marking is done at FreeFall Laser while the laser-engraving of metal is done off-sight with a metal engraving specialist.
FreeFall Artists Out in the World

Two of my laser-engraved screenprints are included in Passage, a journey through prints, curated by Alana Akacki. Passage is a group printmaking exhibition that focues on travel and memories. Artists include Annie Bissett, Joan Dix Blair, Thorsten Dennerline, Nancy Haver, Sarah Pike, Nori Pepe, Mary Ellen Riell, and Sandy Wimer.
