Physics Advocacy in Action

The APS Office of Public Affairs (OPA) organized an advocacy campaign specifically for physics undergraduates in August. OPA worked with the Society of Physics Students (SPS) and site leaders of NSF-funded Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) programs to send emails to SPS members and REU students asking them to contact Congress. The students personalized a message that centered around asking the Senate to support funding for programs that enable undergraduate research.

As you can see in the figure, the students had a wide reach across the country, contacting 78 Senators (39 states)! That’s the biggest reach an APS population-specific advocacy campaign has had this year. Thanks to all of the students who took the time to be advocates for science!
