ILM Program Benefits Children With Autism

Hello Readers!

It's a great day for 10 Books A Home, its participants and supporters! We are releasing a research report of the progress one of our preschool-aged learners has made over the past 10 months of being in our ILM (Intrinsic Learning Motivation) program. His name is Danny and he has autism.

Research studies on children with autism tend to lean on video evidence to capture fine details of human development such as initiating physical contact and looking at a person, responding to others etc. Hence, our report is accompanied by a video that tracks and shows evidence of the growth Danny has shown during his participation in our program.

So far we have evidence from three years of school report cards that ILM program graduates are performing at or above grade level in public schools.  Our new research reports on the progress we have seen a child with learning difference make only 31 weeks into the program. We are calling this report Project Nudge report because it shows how participation in our ILM program may be helping children with Autism gently "nudge" off the Autism spectrum.

We
believe this report represents the influence we have in hundreds of homes with preschool-aged children of all learning abilities, and why our parents become so invested in their children’s education.

We are committed to extensive research despite the fact that our program is only five years old. We believe our novel educational method (Intrinsic Learning Motivation) has the potential to eliminate high poverty in the long-term. We will produce video reports like these every quarter beginning in 2018 in order to document the unique progress that different children make while in our program.

About 10 Books A Home
10 Books A Home (10BH) is an early education nonprofit whose mission is to prepare high poverty preschoolers to excel in kindergarten by having their parents and volunteers teach them about things they are naturally motivated to learn about. 10BH staff creates a partnership between the preschooler’s parent and a volunteer who both provide a tutoring lesson every week that centers on the child’s intrinsic learning motivations (ILMs). The purpose of every tutoring lesson is to feed the child’s learning motivations and leave assignments that the child and her parent can continue learning about before the next lesson. Tutoring lessons happen for two years in the homes of children so that families can develop a culture of learning that will benefit them long after they exit 10BH and begin kindergarten.
