From the Principal's Desk
Dear MESA Families,
It’s hard to believe that we are already in our 4th week of the school year. When visiting classrooms, I am amazed each day with the awesome rigorous instructional lessons being taught by our hardworking classroom teachers who are well planned. If you visit your scholar's classroom during the school day I encourage you to look for the following:
  • Posted daily schedule
  • Learning objective posted- SWBAT (scholars will be able to): this informs scholars each day of what they are responsible for learning by the end of the class period. Learning objectives are tied to CCSS (common core state standards) which are aligned with standardized tests that our scholars take including STAR testing and the Wisconsin Forward exam.
  • Lesson plans
  • Classroom attendance data, homework data, and discipline data
The purpose of posting all of this information is to offer transparency, accountability, and build school culture. Our school goal this year is to go from good to great. We understand that this will not be easy but with the hard work of scholars and staff along with strong parent involvement, we will ACCOMPLISH IT!

Now Enrolling!
We have open seats in all grades at MESA. This is a rare opportunity for interested families to enroll.  If you know of a family looking for a great school, please encourage them to consider applying at MESA. They can apply online by going to www.theenvironmentalschool.org/admission or completing an application in the main office. We are the only Expeditionary Learning school in the urban community. Come and see how hard our scholars are working and the amazing things that they are doing. Learn more by visiting our school website.
Parent Meeting/Orientation
To ensure that you are knowledgeable of all changes to school policies including attendance, homework, discipline, and bus transportation to name a few, we NEED you to attend one of the two upcoming Parent/Scholar orientations:

Saturday, September 16, 2017 at 9:30a.m.
Monday, September 18, 2017 at 4:30p.m.

These orientations will be very informative with light refreshments and raffles. If you cannot make it to any of the meeting times please contact our Parent and Learning Liaison, Ms. Oatis-McMiller to schedule a separate time to meet and review the 2017-2018 Family Handbook.
Academic Updates

STAR testing has begun for grades K5-8. Scholars will be taking two assessments within the next two weeks, a math and literacy assessment. These assessments are very important and will be used as a baseline for teachers to make instructional decisions. Scholars should come to school every day prepared to take their assessments. This is especially important for our 7th and 8th grade scholars, as these scores may be used to determine admission into high school. Family members, please cheer on your scholars and encourage them to do their best! Please refer to STAR's parent resource page for more information.

Homework
Homework will be assigned nightly and is expected to be brought back to school for teachers to review. See below for the recommended about of time that your scholar should be spending on homework and reading each night. Family members are strongly encouraged to review their scholar’s homework before it is brought back to school. Assignment sheets will begin going home daily for K4-5th grade. Assignment sheets will include what color scholars ended their day on, homework, habits of scholarship, and a place for a parent's/guardian's signature. This assignment sheet is expected to be looked at every day and signed by a parent/guardian. Being partners in our scholars' education will make all the difference!

Uniforms
All scholars are required to wear their full uniform to school. Information regarding school uniforms can be found by clicking on the link below. Polo’s must be school issued with the MESA insignia in the top left corner. Belts or suspenders are required for pants, shorts, or skirts with belt loops. Effective on September 5, 2017, Middle School scholars are required to begin wearing their white oxford dress shirts, ties and dress shoes on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Polos, oxfords, and ties can be purchased in the main office.

Alternate Household Income Form
Sent home with your scholar this week was an Alternate Household Income Form. This form determines state funding for our school. This form also determines eligibility for free or reduced rates for participation in recreational activities, testing fees, and more. Scholars need this information on file in Infinite Campus to prove eligibility for these reduced or free rates. If you did not receive this form you can click below.

Forms are due on Tuesday, September 5, 2017!
