Listen - The Dynamic Leadership Podcast: Richard Pitino (Minnesota)
Louisville AD Jurich announces the Cards have agreed to a 10-year, $160M deal with Adidas, which would make U of L highest paid Three Stripes partner and constitute one of the five most lucrative apparel deals in the country. Jurich mentioned the new pact at last night's 50-Yard Line Dinner, a key fundraising get together before FB season, with a full presser coming this morning at 11a. (link
Richmond Prez Crutcher announces the members of the search committee tasked with finding the school's next AD. The 10-person committee will be chaired by university COO Hale and includes one student along with representatives from the faculty and board of trustees. Collegiate Sports Associates' Turner will assist. Crutcher: "Todd and his colleague, Brad Bates, who previously served as director of athletics at Boston College and Miami University (Ohio), will be on campus next week to meet with the search committee and other members of our university community." Crutcher adds that the university is confident it will have a new AD in place by early 2018. (link)
According to a lawsuit filed June 27, the Horizon League claims that Valparaiso breached its contract by failing to provide a one-year notice of its intention to leave the conference, thereby incurring $500K in agreed upon liquidated damages. In addition, the Horizon League claims that the MVC tortuously interfered by inducing Valpo to switch leagues following the exit of Wichita State. Valpo Prez Heckler, who the Horizon claims initially suggested increasing the exit fee from $50K to $500K in 2012, argues that Valpo is not beholden to the $500K fee because its initial agreement with the league, signed in 2006, did not include the increase. Forbes' Belzer states that several cases have set legal precedent in conference realignment matters, including Maryland's decision to part ways with the ACC. After two years of litigation, both sides agreed on a fee of $31.3M. The original fee was over $52M. (link)
Michigan AD Manuel discusses the university's decision to reinstate FB student-athlete Perry, who earlier this month was sentenced to 12 months probation and 60 hours community service after pleading guilty to one count of misdemeanor assault and battery and one felony count of resisting arrest in an incident that involved a female. The athletic department's investigation into the case, Manuel states, was exhaustive and collaborative, as he met with Prez Schlissel, UMPD police and the school's Office of Student Life. Manuel also emphasizes that the university understands the gravity of the situation and notes Perry's remorse: "He was apologetic. He has a sentence from the court. He knows what he has to do as it relates to meeting those obligations, the obligations that this department, this university, our football program, expects of him moving forward. During the time of the suspension, he was a model citizen and that was taken into account." Perry was suspended for two games last season as well as the Orange Bowl. (link)
Also from Ann Arbor, the Michigan FB roster remains elusive, as New Jersey Advance Media, despite weeks of FOIA requests, has received responses such as there is no "responsive document" and "there is no roster" from UM. After clarification that the university now understands the FOIA request to be a list of "all active Michigan football student-athletes on scholarship/financial aid," Michigan says it will determine whether any responsive records fit that description. (link)
In order to help lift some financial pressure from the campus as a whole, Iowa AD Barta announces that athletics will contribute an additional $4M to the UI general fund. The added funding, which comes in addition to the $23M athletics transferred back to campus at-large during FY17, will support student wellness, diversity and inclusion and student success. Barta: "As state funding has decreased over the years, it has become more apparent one of the ways athletics can assist the university is by helping ease its financial burden." UI has absorbed $10M in funding cuts for the upcoming year with more possibly to come. The athletic department expects to bring in $117.1M in revenue for the upcoming year, a 15% increase over last year. (link)
USA Today columnist Wolken examines the changes that have stemmed from the College Football Playoff, including reimbursements for the families of student-athletes to attend major events such as the CFP semifinals and Final Four in MBB & WBB. Former Missouri AD Alden notes that while such changes seem obvious today, the idea of paying for travel caused many, including him, to scoff: "But then you step away from that, you think, that's a really good thing. If we can help families to be able to travel to these types of events they couldn't normally afford, why wouldn't we do that?" (link); Moving forward, talk about the CFP staying at four teams has some credibility, according to USA Today's Schroeder, who points out there is currently "zero impetus for change" and cites CFP Executive Director Hancock: "It's difficult to qualify for the CFP, and so the teams that do qualify feel really good about what they have accomplished. College football is not like other sports where the regular season leads to what is basically an all-comers meet at the end. With our sport, the regular season is vital. Scarcity breeds significance." (link)
Penn State selects Anthony Travel for comprehensive university-wide business travel needs. Nittany Lions AD Barbour: "We are very pleased to expand our partnership with Anthony Travel. Anthony Travel is the industry leader in collegiate sports travel solutions, and our teams will benefit from their vast experience and expertise in providing excellent travel services." The pair previously worked together on the 2014 Croke Park Classic in Dublin when PSU faced UCF. Pact begins on the 28th of this month. (link, link)
No more "East Carolina," now simply use "ECU." In an attempt to prevent any "Eastern Carolina" misidentification and, as university spokesman Eppes admitted, it's just easier to fit on merchandise and paperwork, the Pirates in Greenville are shortening their main moniker. More Eppes: "ECU helps us communicate better. We can establish a reputation for the university as it is today instead of what it was a long time ago." (link)

Sad note for the nostalgic among us, as this year's 40th annual GCI Great Alaska Shootout will be the final edition of the Thanksgiving-week tourney. Citing a lack of funding, the longest-running regular-season college hoops tourney will shutter after this season. The Shootout has hosted 30 of the 35 programs to win an NCAA championship and an average of 3.4 teams per tournament went on to make the NCAA Tournament the following spring. (link)

It's Personnel: Clemson FB HC Swinney agreed to a six-year, $31.75M deal in April 2016 and when the compensation committee of the school's Board of Trustees meets today he is "expected to receive a significantly upgraded contract." (link); Snodgrass Partners adds former U.S. Davis Cup captain Gullikson as VP of Sports Recruiting for the tennis market and his wife Command Performance Coaching founder Considine as Sr. Exec. Recruiter for sports jobs. (link); Arizona AD Heeke announces that long-time AC Court will lead the Women's Gymnastics program on an interim basis for his year, replacing former HC Yim who left the Wildcats program for Stanford earlier this week. (link); Samford AD Newton names UAB AC Wilson to lead the Women's Golf program. (link);  Wagner AD Hameline goes with Florida Gulf Coast AC Ubrun as his Women's Golf HC selection. (link); UT Martin MBB HC Stewart signed a rolling five-year contract extension through 2021-22. No financials detailed. Swag Situations: ESPN's Trotter goes in on how Oregon established "cool," asks if Ducks FB can live up to the descriptor again under new HC Taggart. As we all know, UO's uniform diversification alongside apparel partner Nike is a key part of the story & HCs around the nation - including LSU's Orgeron, Kansas' Beaty & Texas Tech's Kingsbury - recount how hyped prospective student-athletes were about the Oregon threads. Uniform swag was followed by pristine facilities, further enhancing the brand. Former Ducks senior leader & current Fresno State AD Bartko: "Oregon is at a crossroads. [...] That's scary...it's really easy to go from the penthouse to the outhouse." More. (link); Sticking to the theme, Oregon unveiled a sharp new white-silver-yellow #StompOutCancer combination that will be worn the second week of the season against Nebraska. Even cooler: Proceeds will go toward combating childhood cancer. (link); It's that time of year as ESPN's Uni Watch is back to preview all the changes for the upcoming season. FootballScoop also takes a look at 73 uniform alterations around the nation. (link, link)
Hurricane Harvey is likely to wreck some havoc on weekend schedules in Texas as it hits land. Sam Houston State has already released a statement to its fans as AD Williams notes it as a "fluid situation" with safety being paramount. The Bearkats are scheduled to face Richmond in a high-profile FCS match-up Sunday at 6p on ESPNU. (link); Incarnate Word has already started to cancel some events in San Antonio, including playing host to Tulane, UTEP & Louisiana in a Volleyball prep series. Tulane will now travel to Lafayette for a doubleheader. (link)
North Carolina's Rams Club set a record for the second-straight year with $69M in giving, up 12% from the total in 2015-16. The Rams Club also gained more than 900 new members and now has 14,726 on the rolls. $20.3M went to the scholarship endowment, $23M to facilities projects, $13.8M to the annual fund, $4.15M to individual sport endowments, $5.46M toward premium seating and $2.5M in miscellaneous gifts. The scholarship endowment's investment yield covers nearly 60% of annual scholarship costs, with the annual fund making up the rest. (link)
Nebraska School Activities Association Executive Director Tenopir still thinks the Big Ten & Commish Delany got it wrong on scheduling B1G FB match-ups on Friday nights. "If [the Cornhuskers] continue to have away games on Fridays, that’s still going to have a major impact on Nebraska high schools. As I told Jim Delany, the commissioner of the Big Ten, he really didn’t understand the culture of Nebraska football. If he thought an away game wasn’t going to impact us, he was wrong. […] I guess, from my perspective, the University of Nebraska has heard from a lot of people — and they’re trying to be not only a good Big Ten partner but also be a good partner with the high school activities in Nebraska. And we just hope that outcome is such that it doesn’t knock high school sports down a notch." Tenopir also says Huskers AD Eichorst has "made an effort to minimize whatever conflicts there might be." (link)
Media Plays: USF is set to launch a 24/7 streaming radio play on iHeartRadio this Saturday. Local radio personality Sharp joins the Bulls to push the effort & AD Harlan comments, "This is really unique in college athletics to deliver live events, coaches shows, archived replays of great games and original athletics programming across the spectrum of all our sports and have it available wherever Bulls fans may be in the world free of charge." (link); Rivals reports James Madison is on the cusp of its own linear TV deal to compliment the CAA's agreements. Dukes AD Bourne noted last week how he was disappointed JMU will only be a part of the CAA-CBS Sports Network schedule one time this season. (link); High-profile ESPN SportsCenter anchor Van Pelt is adding another day, Sunday, to his schedule starting in a couple of weeks. Looks to be a push to sustain audience after ESPN's Sunday Night FB schedule of NFL games. (link)
MANDTVR: VR & 360-Degree Experiences
In another installment of CBS Sports' annual "Candid Coaches" series, Michigan MBB HC Beilein comes in first by a wide margin in the anonymous poll that asked more than 100 hoops coaches which leader runs the cleanest program. Notre Dame HC Brey, Virginia HC Bennett, Wisconsin HC Gard, and Gonzaga HC Few rounded out the Top 5. One coach remarked: "John Beilein is a by-the-book, letter-of-the-law guy. LETTER-OF-THE-LAW. ... You get two hours to work out guys for the week. If he works out a kid and, say, they go one hour and one minute, he's going to start the next time with 59 minutes on the clock and go 59 minutes. That's the truth." (link)
Pac-12 Hotline's Wilner does some solid work recapping the Pac-12 Networks' carriage challenges with DirecTV. Wilner gets multiple key players on the record who recount how the negotiations could never get both parties on the same page. Key trip points looks to have been a "Most Favored Nation" clause & a $0.10 per subscriber ask for those outside the Pac-12's six state core that DirecTV could never get comfortable with. All in all, per one source, "I don’t expect any DirecTV carriage for the Pac-12 Networks. Once you don’t have a deal, and you don’t have one for years, life moves on." More. (link)
After receiving more than 2,400 responses from a FB season ticket holder survey, Ole Miss announced some changes to its gameday environment. Most notably, fans can utilize mobile concession with fast pickup and kiosk ordering. There's also now nine express refill stations, bottled water sales inside the main gates prior to kickoff, new team store experiences, implementing the SEC's clear bag policy, free wi-fi, a new mobile app, and the team singing the Alma Mater in front of the student section after each win. (link)
Beer at Ballgames: San Jose State will once again offer beer and wine during FB games at CEFCU Stadium. Fans will be required to obtain wristbands at one of six ID stations throughout the stadium and there will be a two-item limit per sale, which will conclude at the end of the third quarter. (link); LSU has shelved the idea of creating a beer garden in Tiger Stadium for the time being, saying they need to do more work with the SEC in order to execute the concept. (link)
Quite interesting from the DII world: The NCAA approved University of Mary's Year-Round Campus initiative, which allows student-athletes to be full-time summer students, without that semester counting against their eligibility. NSIC Asst. Commish for Compliance Christoffels (a former UMary Asst. AD for Compliance), who penned the Letter for Review, notes the policy "would result in lifetime financial benefit of over $320,000 with a bachelor's degree in 2.6 years and over $600,000 with a master's degree in four years." UMary VP for Enrollment Management McMahon: "At one point, one of the NCAA staff members stated, 'we haven't seen anything like this before, but having seen it, we're confident we'll see many similar programs spring up in the future.'" (link)
Also Noticed: For the fourth year, the National Football Foundation's National Scholar-Athletes will be front and center at the 2017 Learfield Intercollegiate Athletics Forum in NYC in December as each receives an $18K scholarship. (link); Colorado State already sold out tomorrow's stadium-opener against Oregon State en route to a new FB season ticket sales record of 15K+, including 5,750 new season ticket holders this year, a 101% increase from 2016. Rams AD Parker credits The Aspire Group for its "remarkable job" as revenue from season tix has increased 121% since 2014. (link); Auburn's Student Government Association launched its new FB ticketing website yesterday, includes rules on infractions as students will be penalized for unused tickets or late arrivals to games. (link); For the first time, the Green Giant brand will enter a collegiate sports marketplace as B&G Foods and Penn State agree to bring the classic vegetable brand inside Beaver Stadium and make it an "Official Tailgate Partner." Learfield brokered. (link); Southern Miss is the latest to go with 5050 Central for its digital fundraising platform. (link); Despite the call for his resignation by a local politician running for governor, Boise State Prez Kustra isn't going anywhere. (link); Still no official word on the choice for the next CEO of Uber, but the board meets today to continue its discussion. Former GE CEO Immelt and "another dark horse candidate" will present to the group. Hewlett Packard CEO Whitman continues to deny that she would leave her current post. (link); The iPhone has now been around 10 years & this Fall's new version may cost $999. (link)

Peg Bradley-Doppes' highly-successful run as Denver's AD is coming to an end, but not before she built a strong overall portfolio with the Pioneers featuring a number of top-ranked programs. Bradley-Doppes stopped in for a long 1.Q conversation back in the spring that covered hiring coaches, building a successful culture across sports & relying on your gut to make some key decisions.
