Proud to be part of the BRIC project

The Tithe Barn Trust was excited to be invited to participate and speak at the BRIC conference in Sweden this summer. The EU funded BRIC project, led by Professor Tim Waller at Anglia Ruskin University, involves preschool teachers, young children and parents in exploring democratic engagement in public and civic spaces.

The experiences and visits made by local preschoolers to the Tithe Barn, in Landbeach, were part of a case study for the project. This highlighted what a powerful role our local heritage and community engagement can play in the lives of young children.

BRIC takes the view that children are competent from an early age and able to see the potential of public spaces that adults may not. Although the project officially comes to an end soon, the
Tithe Barn Trust welcomes the ongoing relationship BRIC has ignited with the preschoolers and the Tithe Barn.

Tithe Barn celebrates Fen Edge Festival

As part of the Fen Edge Festival the Tithe Barn Trust opened the Tithe Barn for free to Fen Edge Festival goers in June. Visitors were even transported by a 1969 classic coach from the festival in Cottenham.

The Tithe Barn Trust is a small charity and volunteer not-for profit group aiming to save and sympathetically restore the unique timber frame Grade II Listed Tithe Barn for community use. The Fen Edge Festival is organised by the Fen Edge Community Association, a charity promoting and supporting clubs, groups and societies in Cottenham, Landbeach, Rampton, Waterbeach and Willingham.

Gemma O’Shea, Tithe Barn Trust Chair, says “We were delighted to welcome over 100 visitors to the Tithe Barn over the weekend and we were proud to be part of the Fen Edge Festival this year. Our thanks go to the Fen Edge Community Association for organising another successful festival, and the Tithe Barn Trust is excited to be one of the festival’s nominated good causes for 2017. We have to say a huge thank you to Charles too for volunteering to take visitors to the Tithe Barn on his superb classic coach.”

Once at the Tithe Barn visitors enjoyed face painting, storytelling, traditional games and introductory talks about the history of the Tithe Barn.

The Tithe Barn Trust has been working hard; however, we still need your help to save this gem at the heart of Landbeach. The barn is in a poor condition and deteriorating. We believe the Tithe barn, with thatched roof, timber granary and brick threshing floor to be unique to Cambridgeshire, whilst experts suggest that it may well date from the medieval period. Sadly over 90% of Tithe Barns have been converted in the UK.

We’re currently seeking a Fundraiser Volunteer and Events Volunteers. Get in touch if you think this could be you. You will have the chance to make a real difference to a friendly and supportive charity at a time of significant development. Email tithebarntrust@gmail.com to find out more.
