WELCOME To Your July 2017 SMALL BUSINESS GROWTH AND DEVELOPMENT Newsletter

Easy to use information to help Small Business Owners in their business.

Our Focus this month is Leadership.  All of the plans, all of the ideas, all of the efforts within your business do not happen without solid leadership.

This month's topics are -

  • Good Leadership Eliminates Waste
    • Waste is present in all processes. Often times after a quality initiative organizations believe they have reduced waste, and the cost associated with it, almost as much as it can be. It is at this point that the leader truly shows their value. As they communicate the vision to execute waste elimination efforts further.
  • Good Leaders Get Results
    • Remember that in your role as a leader you are measured by the results you achieve. It is hard to say to someone who is working at something hard that it isn’t enough. Yet that is what you must do. You may want to congratulate hard work and good intentions, but the bottom line remains the results.
  • When Leaders Fail
    • It only takes one good leader to start a leadership revolution in your company. One with the vision to succeed, the courage to try and the understanding that the road to leadership success might be fraught with risk and unpopularity.  Those who step up and take the challenge often succeed.  Those who do not always fail.

Leadership TIP

Good Leaders are always growing, seeking ways to improve themselves while also learning more.  Successful Good Leaders make having a Mentor or a Coach as a part of their personal development.

Good Leadership Eliminates Waste

I write a lot about leadership. I have developed and presented leadership training to a lot of organizations and people. They learned about inspiring, motivating developing and communicating a vision. In every case, from the US Army to Corporate America these leaders have used those skills to reduce waste, or if you prefer, to reduce cost. I am not claiming responsibility for the outcomes they created. I am saying that regardless of their environment each of them has, through the leadership skills they learned, honed and used, contributed to their organizations in such a way as to reduce or eliminate waste.

Are You Advertising, Marketing, Or Don't You Know?

Now I know that a failure of leadership is something we have all either heard of…or experienced. Unless our entire existence is spent playing video games and texting like-minded others we have seen leadership fail.

Leadership failure happens for a variety of reasons. For example:

  • It can come from the leader losing interest
  • It can come from the leader’s departure
  • It can come because the leader was never able to obtain buy in for their vision
  • It can come from the leader never really being a leader

While not all of the reasons leaders fail those 4 can cover most of the reasons and experiences we have had. There is a 5th reason not mentioned above. A reason in my view and experience covers almost every reason leaders fail. It is a loss of courage.

Good Leaders Get Good Results - The Others Are Just Busy

I was talking with a couple of friends of mine over coffee the other morning. Both are regular full time employees for a company. They were discussing how hard they had been working; all of the meetings and task forces they were involved in. The pressure of attending these and how good they felt about the involvement they had in determining the direction and accomplishments of their employers. They were smiling and happy.

Are you familiar with the “deer in the headlights” stare? That blank unblinking look one gets when rounding the corner on a dark road at night when the headlights of your car shine directly into a deer’s eyes? The deer simply stands there, frozen into inaction and doing nothing. That is the look I got from both of them when I asked…”what are your results from all of this effort?”
