Women In HPC August 2017 Newsletter
Welcome to the WHPC August 2017 newsletter!

There is still time to submit your abstract for a virtual poster contribution to the the 7th International WHPC workshop at SC17 this November. The workshop will take place on November 12th at the SC17 conference — full details below.

As we move from Summer into Autumn next month, WHPC will be in Spain and the USA. Join us at the WomEncourage conference in Barcelona on the 7th September for a Hands-on Introduction to HPC, including getting to use the ARCHER supercomputer. Places are limited, so register soon.

Our second ‘Skills to Thrive’ workshop will take place at EuroMPI/USA 2017 at Argonne National Laboratory on Monday, 25th September. The session will be of benefit to all (not just women), and will provide advice and discussion on the skills needed to excel in an HPC career, as well as discussions on work/life balance and unconscious bias.

Read on for details on mentoring for WHPC at SC17, the next free Supercomputing MOOC, and how SC17 is working to improve diversity and inclusion. Finally, don’t forget to stay in touch with us between newsletters. Follow us on social media (full details at the end of this newsletter).

Posters and Mentors Wanted at SC17

Call For Posters

There is still a short amount of time left to submit an abstract for a virtual poster at the WHPC workshop at SC17. This is a poster session with a difference. It is targeted at early career women and encourages them to showcase their work — after each presenter provides a lightning talk there will be an opportunity to explore the content of those talks in more detail at a structured networking session.

If you are interested in taking part, the deadline for poster abstracts has been extended to 27th August 2017.

Mentors Needed

WHPC is still seeking volunteers to mentor our poster presenters for the WHPC SC17 workshop. To help ensure that our mentors and mentees are matched appropriately we are asking potential mentors to fill in a short application form on their areas of expertise. We hope that you consider being a mentor — you don’t have to be an expert in a particular field to offer great advice!

Please also forward this on to anyone who you think may be interested in mentoring.

SC17 Focuses on Inclusivity for Attendees

SC17 is actively working to embrace diversity and inclusion in order to improve the attendee experience. As such, the SC17 Inclusivity team, led by WHPC’s Toni Collis, has been working hard to identify areas that will improve inclusion at the conference. This year will see the continuation of the provision of Childcare, the parents room, and an extension of the Navigate SC sessions to multiple days (learn how to make the most of the SC week!).

In addition, there will be a multi-faith prayer and meditation room and a family restroom (provided for those who need assistance). The team and the conference volunteers are also working to raise awareness of the benefits of diverse groups, and how improving the attendee experience benefits everyone, not just those who are currently underrepresented.

The SC conference has a code of conduct that aims to ensure all attendees experience a pleasant conference. We encourage everyone to report breaches of the code of conduct so that the committee can investigate further.

If you would like to stay up to date with SC’s inclusivity activities or get in touch with the team, follow them on Twitter @SCInclusivity.
