Georgia Tech this morning is expected to announce Adidas as its new apparel sponsor. A post from Tech's Twitter account declared that "We are the tomorrow takers," which seems to be in line with a 2015 Adidas commercial titled Here's to the Takers. If the announcement goes as expected, Georgia Tech will join Miami, Kansas, Texas A&M and several other programs as Adidas clients. (link)
Scout's California site, Bear Territory, reports several names that have "emerged" as potential candidates to succeed AD Williams, who will depart at the end of the academic year. Those mentioned include UC Irvine AD Izzi, Maryland AD Anderson, Cal Senior Assoc. AD Pezman, Fresno State AD Bartko and Pac-12 Networks VP of Communications Mallette, among others. Williams notes that familiarity with the UC System will be at least one qualifying factor: "What the school wants to accomplish academically, what's important to the alums, not forgetting that producing fine young men and women is really important to the alums here." He qualifies by saying that direct experience at Cal is not a prerequisite but experience at peer institutions such as Michigan, Stanford or UCLA might be. "Faculty at a flagship research university tends to be a little different than faculty at other places." (link)
San Francisco Chronicle columnist Killion offers a snapshot of Cal's current financial situation while outlining some of the decisions that led to it, including the $474M in construction to Memorial Stadium nearly a decade ago. The original plan, which called for renovations and earthquake retrofitting deemed necessary to remain on the site, would have cost less than half of that total. Killion calls the debt "debilitating" and points out that once principal payments start in 2032, the university will be shelling out $26M annually. She continues: "The training center and amenities were supposed to create a world-class athletic environment at Cal. Instead, those luxuries will force Cal to make hard choices, ones that probably will undercut the overall strength of its athletic department," such as eliminating sports. Killion concludes by questioning the attractiveness of the AD position because "Cal is No. 1 in something: having the most difficult athletic department in the country to run." (link)
SBJ's Ourand & Smith go deep on how the Big Ten Network came to be as this year marks the 10th on air for the original bold TV play. B1G Commish Delany on challenging carriage deals, which included behemoths Comcast & Time Warner, "We were hoping we could get through it without any street fights, but the reality was that the network wouldn’t be born without some street fighting." Former CBS & Turner executive O'Malley, who consulted Delany on the process, "You have to remember that Jim had somewhat of a cynical view of television, and an antithetical relationship with ESPN. There’s no question about that. He felt that ESPN was dominating college sports to an unhealthy degree and that they were financially taking advantage of the conferences." The league's relationship with Fox ended up helping in a number of ways, including getting DirecTV on board as the initial distributor. More Delany: "By going first, certainly it was tough, certainly we learned some lessons, but if you go the easier route, you pay for it in other ways," points to the SEC's longterm tie with ESPN & the ACC having to go the same route to get a network. Lots more & especially important given today's TV landscape. (link)
In a letter to supporters ahead of the fall sports season, LSU AD Alleva declares that "excellence is the mission" in all facets of the department, an idea that is personified by FB HC Orgeron. "Not only has Coach O delivered with another great recruiting class, he has also put in place the best staff in America. Top-tier talent with tremendous character and great coaching is a recipe for good things ahead." Alleva also discusses the Skyline Club which launches this year and provides fans with an opportunity to take in games in Death Valley while having food and drink catered (with beer and wine available for purchase). "It's a new and unique perspective on premium seating for college football and it's something I believe our fans are going to love." Finally, Mike the Tiger VII has been relocated to his newly renovated habitat. Video inside. (link)
SB Nation contributor Godfrey chronicles the days leading up to LSU FB HC Orgeron's being offered the job on a permanent basis last season, including Orgeron's initial interview with AD Alleva in which Alleva told Orgeron he was going to meet with now-Texas HC Herman, adding: "He may be first. You're probably second." At that point, Orgeron explains, he pulled it together and started competing. "Got calls into [Alleva]. Pete [Carroll] called him. Lane [Kiffin] called him, bang bang bang." Asked whether he began recruiting his own AD, Orgeron says: "Oh ho, yeah baby. We got it rolling." Once Herman made the decision to go to Texas, Alleva says he brought Orgeron in to discuss how he would do things differently than he did at Ole Miss. Alleva: "And he just laid it out. He said he’d learned a lot. He delegates to people who are experts at what they do, and he realizes he’s not an expert at everything, just like any of us. We have to hire people that are good at things we’re not good at." Full story. (link)
Florida AD Stricklin calls the current SEC FB scheduling model "suboptimal" and says he would prefer a variation that includes more rotation. Stricklin's comments come after a Georgia beat writer pointed out that the next solar eclipse will take place in 2024, by which time UGA will still not have traveled to College Station to take on Texas A&M. It will still be another two seasons before UGA and TAMU meet for the first time since the latter joined the league. (link)
Watch: San Jose State AD Wicker discusses several topics, including the future home of Aztec FB, the transition in MBB from Fisher to Dutcher and what effect the departure of the Chargers has had on FB ticket sales. Regarding the latter, Wicker says SDSU has sold nearly 3,000 new season tickets and suggests that number can still climb with two weeks to go before the season starts. Long-term, Wicker sees SDSU FB playing in the former Qualcomm Stadium, where it has renewed its lease through 2020, until such time as the university can build its own stadium in Mission Valley. Full interview. (link)
Less than a year after launching as the digital content and media wing of the Memphis Grizzlies, Grind City Media (GCM) announces it will expand its coverage to include NCAA FB. "We’ll explore how the Ole Miss Rebels regroup amid a tumultuous offseason and if Dan Mullen can spark a bounce-back year for Mississippi State. We’ll examine whether the Volunteers and Razorbacks are truly ready to take the next step and challenge Alabama’s SEC championship dominance. And, of course, there are Mike Norvell’s exciting Memphis Tigers, who are on the cusp of national prominence." In addition, GCM has built a new studio, from which they will deliver podcasts, livestreams and other digital content, including the Chris Vernon Show. Boiled down: An NBA organization-owned media outlet will now be producing content on college FB. The landscape is changing. (link)

Rice released a video of its trip to Australia to take on Stanford, with a four-hour flight to Los Angeles followed by a 14 1/2-hour jaunt across the Pacific Ocean. Scenes showed players enjoying some card games and the latest "Game of Thrones" episode at the airport before boarding. During the nighttime (Central time) flight, the strength staff woke up players and led them through some stretching and agility work up and down the plane's aisle to combat the long bouts of sitting while also helping them adjust to the drastic time change. (link); Also of note, the annual Army-Navy game will move to the Meadowlands in 2021 to mark the 20-year anniversary of 9/11. Philadelphia will host the game from 2017-20 and in 2022. (link)

Indiana AD Glass offers a tour of Memorial Stadium's south end zone project, which will be completed this summer. Included in the scope are renovations to the players' locker rooms and lounge, with updates to the Hoosier Room coming next summer. Glass acknowledges that while the project is geared toward supporting current student-athletes athletically, academically and personally, it will have a positive impact on recruiting. In addition, Glass reports that Memorial Stadium will have the most scoreboard square footage on aggregate (presumably in the nation) along with ribbon boards and an events suite. Video tour. (link
Auburn launched the AUBURNYOU student-athlete development program, focusing on academic strategies, personal growth, leadership development and career planning. The initiative also includes an internship program and experiential learning opportunities for Tiger student-athletes. (link); More from The Plains, as AU announces its gameday experience enhancements for 2017. Top of the list is that Jordan-Hare's video board will include a first-down marker similar to what fans see on their TVs, the student section will feature a DJ and fans can plan their gameday attire around theme days like Orange-Out, True Blue and Stripe the Stadium. CBS Sports releases the first installments of its Candid Coaches series, where MBB HCs are granted anonymity in exchange for their thoughts on a wide variety of topics. 40% of coaches from around the nation picked Arizona as the best team in 2017-18, with Michigan State garnering 28% of the vote. Duke and Kansas were tied at 9%, and Louisville came in fifth with 6%. Interesting comments on all of the top vote-getters. (link)
More from the latest SBJ: The SEC Network's Finebaum gets the spotlight, recounts a 2012 conversation with a media agent in NYC who didn't believe Finebaum's southern FB roots could generate much play nationally. Finebaum: "I've had a good career, but there's nowhere left to go." Then an unexpected deep profile by, of all publications, The New Yorker, changed Finebaum's course. ESPN expert & notable author Miller, "He’s got that work ethic and he does his homework. Paul’s just warming up. He’s on mile 4 of a marathon." More. (linklink); One storyline to watch this FB season is how advertisers pump cash into TV inventory around college FB. Nissan led the way last year, spending $39.2M, followed by AT&T ($34.7M), Geico ($32.4M), Dr. Pepper ($25.8M) & Verizon ($25.3M). (link)
It's Personnel: Sounds like NFL Commish Goodell will receive a five-year contract extension through 2024, the year he turns 65. (link); A circuit judge declared that Florida A&M doesn't have to pay former MBB HC Johnson, who it fired in 2014 after the third year of a four-year deal (link); Richmond MBB HC Mooney got a one-year contract extension through 2021-22 (link); Fresh off an NCAA Super Regional appearance, Long Beach State extended baseball HC Buckley by four years through 2022 (link); Tronc has installed former FOX exec and Yahoo interim chief Levinsohn as publisher & CEO of the Los Angeles Times, and former Chicago Sun-Times publisher/editor Kirk will take over as The Times' interim executive editor after Tronc fired the paper's publisher and three senior editors Monday (link); UTSA FB HC Wilson received a two-year extension through 2022 and a base pay bump from $650K to $900K, rising to $975K in 2021 (link); Interestingly, venture capitalist & technology guru Meeker will join the PGA TOUR Policy Board as an Independent Director. YouTube TV reaches roughly 50% of the U.S. population with its $35 bundle of 48 channels, which nScreenMedia contends "is certainly making a loss." With the expansion in several markets, the service could reach two-thirds of the population in the next few weeks, and nScreenMedia suggests price increases are inevitable. MANDTVR: VR & 360-Degree Experiences
Sports Illustrated's Feldman profiles Arkansas State FB student-athlete Taylor, who has already earned a bachelor's degree and an MBA as he starts his fourth year on campus. According to Feldman's research, no other FBS FB player has ever secured a master’s so quickly. Taylor: "I saw many universities profit from the talents and abilities of the athletes, but unfortunately many of the athletes did not profit because they did not take advantage of the resources that were made available to them. The college is going to make money off you, and in return they give you a scholarship to pay for your football. I saw many of the universities benefit from the players, but I think players usually don’t think about using the school to get as much paid for as possible and exhaust every resource out of the school like the school exhausts every resource out of them while they are there." (link)
Colorado State is planning to utilize its new on-campus FB stadium to host a number of events that cater to the surrounding community. From wedding receptions to staff meetings, more than 100 events had been booked at the new facility as of late July. However, an agreement between CSU and the city of Fort Collins prohibits major events to be hosted at the stadium during its first two years of operation and limits such events in subsequent years. A major event is considered to be a ticketed event with an expected crowd of more than 12K people. AD Parker: "It is a multi-purpose stadium and it was intentionally designed that way. The project is accomplishing what we hoped it would, serving as a primary engagement asset for the university." (link)
The increase of fracking as a means to extract oil in recent years has translated into big money for the Texas and Texas A&M systems via the state's Permanent University Fund, which is now valued at nearly $20B. Of that endowment, the UT System will receive $603M this year while the TAMU System will bring in about $300M. The Texas Tribune reports that by the time that money is filtered through the system, students will have access to less than $40M (including $3M for the 40,000 undergraduates on the Austin campus and $35M for graduate students) via financial aid. "Meanwhile, the amount the UT System has spent on its general administration quadrupled since 2011 to a peak of $143 million in the last academic year." Other expenditures which the Texas Tribune calls into question include $215M for 300 acres of empty land in Houston with no plans for its use (which the system has since agreed to sell following political pushback), $100M to an in-house tech startup struggling to meet its goals and $141M on a 17-story office tower in downtown Austin which will house hundreds of system employees. More than a dozen Cleveland Browns players formed a circle on the team's sideline and prayed in silent protest during the national anthem last night. Browns player DeValve, one of two white players to take part: "The United States is the greatest country in the world. It is because it provides opportunities to its citizens that no other country does. The issue is that it doesn't provide equal opportunity to everybody. And I wanted to support my African-American teammates today who wanted to take a knee. We wanted to draw attention to the fact that there's things in this country that still need to change. I myself will be raising children that don't look like me, and I want to do my part as well to do everything I can to raise them in a better environment than we have right now." (link)
A new study estimates that Facebook's share of 12- to 17-year-olds in the U.S. will shrink by 3.4% this year, the first time that eMarketer has forecast a decline in Facebook usage for any age group. The study also predicts Snapchat to be bigger than Facebook or Instagram among the 12-17 and 18-24 crowds by the end of the year, with Snapchat predicted to grow by 19.2% among 18- to 24-year-olds, and Instagram expected to jump 8.8% among 12- to- 17-year-olds. Also Noticed: Western Kentucky's Admissions Office shared via Twitter a time-lapse view of totality during yesterday's eclipse from the roof of Potter Hall on the Bowling Green campus. Pretty cool. I just finished Anglea Duckworth's outstanding book, Grit, which includes her groundbreaking predictive modeling on which Army West Point incoming cadets would last & which wouldn't. It's a highly recommended read, if you have put your hands on it already. Last Winter, Army West Point AD Boo Corrigan chatted with 1.Q on the topics of his day to day responsibilities & how his department attempts to differentiate itself in the recruiting of both prospective student-athletes & athletic staff members. Listen by clicking the link.
