Welcome back to the summer edition of the Event Experience Design Newsletter. While everybody went on vacation, we stayed in Berlin and enjoyed the cities summer program and spent our time reading.

THE CONFERENCE 2017

As Sweden is especially nice in late summer, it’s no coincidence that the organizers of The Conference decided to run their third conference in Malmö from September 4 to 5. The conference offers a knowledge experience format that aims to explore the complexities of the digital era through multidisciplinary perspectives. The Conference is curated to focus on three main themes: Human behavior, new technology and how to make both happen.

From an experience design perspective, The Conference is interesting for both its content and multidisciplinary approach, and also because the organizers truly care about human interaction. One such good example is how they connect participants over lunch or the hand’s-on side events on offer (including workshops, master classes, seminars etc.) that run for the entire week prior to and after the main conference.

The organizers also understand that fellow participants are as important as the speakers, so they publish an attendee list for everyone to see and check out who will be there. To top it all, the organizers also developed a guide to the conference city itself: Malmö.
 

Summertime is pool time, right? If, like the rest of us in Berlin, you’re still waiting for pool-perfect temperatures, Tropez might be the perfect reason to visit the Sommerbad Humboldthain open-air pool in the meantime. Tropez is a space for art inside the public pool. Besides the exhibition space POOL, Tropez is a Kiosk and outdoor-stage with performances, readings, discussions and music. Visitors encounter sculptures and installations, and films and drawings that reflect the architecture of the exhibition site and the semi-public pool ground, which was created at the intersection of sciences, design, and performing arts. 

Summertime is reading time. Our must-read (not only for this summer) is Do improvise. Less push. More pause. Better results. A new approach to work (and life) by Robert Poynton. The book is part of a series published by The Do Book Company (the makers of The Do Encouragement Network, also known as Do Lectures). 

Robert Poynton shares how improvisational skills that an actor might use on stage can be honed and applied to everyday work and private life. The end result is a new approach that embraces change as a natural process and has creativity and innovation at its core. To help put the theory into practice, the book contains several games to try out with groups or in workshops.You can also watch Robert Poyton’s talk Beyond Control. A complex world demands the ability to improvise.
