What Links Gong with Ben & Jerry’s and ECover?

Combining doing business with doing good – that’s our ethos and to prove it we’ve joined the global BCorp movement alongside the likes of Unilever’s Ben & Jerry’s, Patagonia, Ecover and Divine Chocolate.

It was a rigorous process of assessment on our governance processes and employee culture over the course of many months to see how we positively impact our community, the environment and our clients. But we’re delighted that we met the required standards and achieved our certification in July joining over 2,100 organisations from 50 countries.

The Value of Reputation

With invited speakers from Moody’s Investors Service and the Business Council for Africa (BCA), Gong organised and hosted an event in Nairobi in July on Reputation Capital.

Attended by 50 decision makers from a wide range of sectors, a lively Q&A followed the presentations on best practice in building and defending corporate reputations, giving a special shout out to B Labs East Africa and the certified B Corp community there. We’ve listened to demand, and further briefings on ‘Cultural Capital’ and ‘Social Capital’ are in the pipeline.

Insights

The business value of reputation can often be overlooked or underestimated. Yet, particularly in the digital age, measuring, managing, protecting and defending reputations should no longer be considered as a crisis management issue but should be an integral part of a business and communications strategy. Here are our 10 top tips for best practice in building and protecting corporate reputation:

Part 1: Build
  1. Be clear on what you stand for
  2. Manage your online presence proactively
  3. Use the right social media platforms
  4. Build advocacy channels
  5. Invest in an awards / certification programme
Part 2: Protect
  1. Risk analysis
  2. Set-up a crisis committee
  3. Scenario planning / crisis simulation
  4. Prepare credible spokespeople
  5. Build your reputation as one of the ‘good guys’

Presidents, Pinnacles and Protocol

It was months in the planning: tents, hundreds of chairs, PA systems, vetted guest lists, stages, music, microphones, catering, carpets, flags and flag poles, plaques, speech writing, press engagement, and hours of careful liaison with protocol teams.

This is a flavor of the groundwork undertaken by the Gong Kenya team, tasked with event management and communications when President Uhuru Kenyatta came to lay the foundation stone for The Pinnacle in Nairobi’s Upper Hill in May. Once complete, The Pinnacle is set to be the tallest towers in Africa. During his address, the president described the project as a ‘vote of confidence’ in Kenya’s policy reforms undertaken to improve Kenya’s competitiveness and attractiveness as an investment destination.

Launching ‘The Power of Purpose’

A year’s work came to fruition in July when Gong supported John O’Brien MBE and Andy Cave on the launch of their book, ‘The Power of Purpose’.

Borne out of an idea by Gong’s MD, Narda Shirley, the book compiles insights from business leaders such as Paul Polman, Sir Mike Rake, Dame Inga Beal and Channel 4’s Alex Mahon about the positive relationship between clarity of purpose and commercial success. From connecting John, a purpose expert with business journalist and author, Andy Cave through to playing a key role in facilitating the publishing and promotion of the book, Gong is proud to help John turn his vision into reality.

The Power of Purpose is available from all good bookshops and on Amazon.

New clients

Old Mutual Alternative Investments, African Infrastructure Investment Managers, and DoctorLink are among the clients which have engaged Gong over the last quarter to work on briefs spanning private equity, impact investing, infrastructure investing, sustainability and digital healthcare across Africa and Europe. And we’re delighted to be working alongside the in-house teams in delivering their communications strategies.

For anyone who has recently witnessed overloaded waiting rooms at their local doctor’s surgery, an alternative option is now available through a new med tech innovation from digital healthcare firm DoctorLink. This tool is specifically designed to alleviate pressure on NHS GP surgeries and support the government’s ambitions for integrated, digital first NHS primary care. Over the last six months Gong has developed and activated a communications strategy to bring DoctorLink’s online advice and triage tool to market. This has involved brand positioning, developing a White Paper, Getting Better, and supporting with the product launch at the Health and Care Innovation Expo 2017. We have now been engaged as the firm’s retained agency for corporate and consumer communications.

Giving Back

AE Sara Bonafair will be donning the lycra and running the Royal Parks Half Marathon to raise money for The Brooke on October 8th.

The Brooke is a unique animal welfare charity, focused on supporting working animals such as donkeys, horses and mules, and the rural families whose livelihoods depend on them, and was supported by Gong for seven years until our ‘dragon’s den’ style democratic vote for a new CSR approach. However, Sara’s run represents Gong’s continuing support for the charity.

Anyone interested in sponsoring Sara can do so here.
