I read every one of my emails.
My daughter loves sports just as much as her grandfather. Before one season is over, she talking about getting ready for another. Year round. As long as she makes great grades in the class, I'm cool with it. She knows her education comes before sports.
She was honored by the City as a Scholar-Athlete. Her Portrait is in one of the Biggest Recreation Centers in the City as a Scholar-Athlete.
She pushing hard for straight A's. She about to turn that corner, real soon.
I laugh sometimes, when I think about I started going on football trips with my father at 5 years old. His star quarterback Mr. Richard Bell was Principal of my Primary School. He was my father's 1950's star quarterback, graduated from high school, received a football scholarship, graduated & became principal of our hometown primary school.
My Father--Chief/ Coach Turner's High School Football & Basketball Teams were Legendary for Championships. They built their own football field. Cut down the trees, painted the lines of the football field, built the stadium. The players during PE & after practice did this hardwork to make their own field. The players named the Stadium "Turner Stadium." (They named the stadium after him while he was at the height of his career, not after he died.)
Many players received sports scholarships to college. One even became mayor of our town. Many became great fathers and role models in our community.
Back to the story of me getting out of school early to go on football trips and education. My father's players would come get me out of school around noon. He had already told Mr. Bell about he would send a few of his players to get me around noon to head off down the road to the game.
My father's football players would come get me to leave. We walked across the field to the Middle School, and he would be doing last minute things, preparing his team to move out.
As soon as the bus rolled out, I would go to the back of the bus with his players. My father would let me chill back there for about 15 minutes. Then, call me up front of the bus with him and ask me, "son, what do you have to do for homework?" I might say "Spelling Words, Math, & Reading." He would say, "get your books out, and get started. What you think, just because I got you out early for school to go on the game trip, you not going to do your homework? Get those spelling words out, lets go over those definition words first. Then, I want to see what you doing with that math. Then, I want to hear you read out loud. You already know, I'm going to ask you about what you read when you get through reading. So you better pay attention to what you reading."
That is exactly how it goes down with daughter.
Education 1st.
