A year after the state of Texas passed legislation allowing concealed guns to be carried on campuses, CBS columnist Dodd examines the position in which the law has put coaches. While some coaches, such as former Texas and current USF HC Strong, have attempted to institute their own rules concerning guns, Dodd points out that the shift in popular culture concerning gun ownership -- along with state laws that reflect it -- are making it increasingly difficult. Washington State HC Leach talks about an incident at Texas Tech which resulted in his confiscating a gun from a player: "He was flashing it around at a party. Really it was just a prop. I said, 'You have one choice: Either I'm going to kick you off the team or you're going to go out to the car and give me the gun and give me the ammunition and I'm never going to see it again.'" The player opted for the latter. But Dodd points out increased attention placed on the Second Amendment would make a similar demand less tenable today. Full article. (link)
Michigan State AD Hollis reflects on the changes that have occurred on campus since he first arrived as a student in 1980. From new buildings to new personnel, MSU has transitioned with the times, but Hollis notes that the "core values of learning, education and research continue to thrive at very high levels." Meanwhile, students continue to be the most important component of the campus, and Hollis observes that they are faced with new challenges, such as the distortion of communication via social media, which "can push the positive and negative to the extremes, along with our associated emotions." He adds: "With an opportunity to engage with nearly 800 student-athletes every year, along with our coaches and staff, I see the true meaning of communication come to life year after year, team after team. Individuals from different backgrounds, religions, nations and ethnicities coming together as teammates." Hollis concludes by encouraging those on campus to engage with others and positively impact their own lives, as well as the lives of those around them. (link)
New Denver AD Grahame has "kind of been all things here" since first lacing up skates as a DU hockey student-athlete in 1969. Following eight seasons of professional hockey, Grahame returned to the program where he served as associate coach, university administrator and color commentator. In total, Grahame has more than 30 years of combined experience at DU and takes over a program that last year was on the cusp of three national championships while claiming the crown in hockey. Grahame: "I think I would be a fool if I thought that I needed to change anything." (link)
Arizona AD Heeke clarifies the department's status concerning improvements to facilities, saying it is still early in the process and things are fluid, but he is excited about what lies ahead. He also shares a university statement on the matter which confirms that UA is seeking approval for a number of projects as part of the UA Capital Improvement Plan that will be presented to regents next month. In addition: "Details are still being finalized and more information will become available as we move through the approval process." (link)
Connecticut announces former ESPN MBB lead reporter Katz will serve as the in-stadium host for FB game day coverage this season. Katz's duties start today as Holy Cross visits East Hartford for this season's opening kick. (link)
Checkout this slide show of $60M worth of facility upgrades for San Antonio's Alamodome, host site of next year's MBB Final Four, the Alamo Bowl & UTSA FB. Convention & Sports Facilities Director Sawaya: "Most facilities like this have put big screens in the end zones. You lose seating when you do that. This will be the only facility like this that has large screens in each corner. So it will be a very unique experience that we think will have a national appeal." Concourse space was also expanded as part of the enhancements. (link); Per Football Scoop's Barnett, North Texas AD Baker indicated during a radio chat yesterday that the Mean Green are "really close" to getting an indoor FB space funded. (link)
While the Pac-12 readies to implement a pilot program designed to shorten the length of FB games, Mercury News columnist Wilner examines whether the addition of an officiating command center will operate at a cross-purpose. Pac-12 VP of Officiating Coleman says no, adding that the command center is "very efficient with respect to the time." The league has taken steps to that end, Wilner explains, as officials in the command center will view replays concurrently with the referee on the field, eliminating the need for the review process to begin anew should an on-field referee request confirmation. The program was tested during home games at California and Oregon last year, and the use of the command center lengthened the games by an average of only 10 seconds. Stanford HC Shaw says coaches were briefed on the process and feel comfortable with it. "Replay officials have been on an island to a certain degree. To have another set of eyes, to have a conversation and get the call right -- we're all interested in that." (link); More on the game-shortening effort. Applies to all non-conference match-ups on Pac-12 Networks this season, includes a 15-minute halftime & kickoffs that occur just one minute past the scheduled programming start. Aim: Knock off 10 to 15 minutes from the overall length. (link);
Kansas State FB HC Snyder pens for The Players' Tribune in a piece titled, "The Teacher." Starts by reflecting on when he took over in Manhattan & the desire to improve he saw from the top levels of KSU administrations down through the last student-athlete on his roster. In closing, "Just about every season I’ll get asked about my future with the program. People wonder what, after all these years, keeps me motivated each day to continue coaching. The answer is simple. It’s the exact same takeaway I had from that very first locker room meeting all those years ago. We still have work to do." (link)
UFC boss White announces refunds for those who ordered the Mayweather-McGregor fight, but didn't get access to the feed. Blames NeuLion, "We want our fans to have the best experience when watching our events. Unfortunately, we didn't deliver the way we wanted on Saturday because of NeuLion's technical issues on UFC.TV. As usual, we will take care of our fans & fix this." (link)

Experiencing the World presented by Anthony Travel
A trio of leading business & economics professors from Stanford, Harvard & MIT from the latest HBR magazine, "Why Do We Undervalue Competent Management?" Thesis: "Firms with strong managerial processes perform significantly better on high-level metrics such as productivity, profitability, growth, and longevity. In addition, the differences in the quality of those processes—and in performance—persist over time, suggesting that competent management is not easy to replicate." Further, "operational excellence...should be treated as a crucial complement to strategy." The in-depth article reviews the trio's research on the topic centered around "management quality," how some firms have very weak monitoring & spend too little time fixing weak managerial situations, the importance of adopting core values & the blindness manager's themselves have on their own unit's performance. More. (link)

CAA Commish D’Antonio is planning to take part in at least one practice this year with each of the conference’s 22 champions from last season. The league is calling it "Joey D vs. CAA Champs," complete with a #JoeyDvsCAAChamps hashtag. D’Antonio has already lined up for a James Madison FB practice and a Northeastern Women's Soccer session. D’Antonio: "It was a situation where I was looking for an opportunity to allow me additional interaction with the student athletes. I wanted a way to get into their world a little bit, and I thought of a scenario where practicing with them might be an opportunity to see things from their side. ... I think sometimes you get caught up in a lot of other stuff and you can lose sight of what we’re doing here. I think that’s the grassroots of what we do. There wouldn’t be commissioner jobs, athletic director jobs, head coach jobs if there weren’t student athletes." (link)
Deals: Army West Point selects Anthony Travel as its official travel provider. Anthony Travel's namesake Prez/CEO: "The prestige of partnering with Army West Point Athletics is unmatched." (link); Tailgate Guys continues its run of earned media as Virginia Tech AD Babcock comments on the pair's partnership, "Certainly it will be a while before we get to the Grove at Ole Miss. But just a place without cars where people can socialize that was a turnkey-type deal for tailgating, campus events and other things. We just like that game-day experience, and in this day and age, you’ve got to have a whole lot more than just the football game, right? So it has to be an experience and an event, and we thought that this certainly added to it." (link); Learfield inks curated-sports-gear-in-a-box producer Fanchest to a three school deal - Wichita State, Cal & North Dakota State - with plans for many more down the road. Retail prices range from $59 to $250. (link)
Many Penn State FB fans are still without their season tickets in hand and the school has announced that anyone without tickets by noon today contact the ticket office to be accommodated. Assoc. AD for Strategic Communications Nelson continues to implement the department, not the ticket printer, for the delay: "We are at fault. The printer doesn’t matter. What happened is not important. We accept full responsibility." Nelson is already planning for next year: "Season ticket holders will receive a ticket delivery timeline, and their tickets and parking, earlier in the summer for the 2018 season." (link)
From Law360: "A proposed subclass of women's lacrosse players objected Wednesday to the $75 million settlement reached in the multidistrict litigation against the NCAA over student-athletes' concussions, saying the deal robs the players of their chance to change NCAA rules about helmet usage in their sport." More behind a wall, which can be jumped with a free trail signup, I'm just out of email addresses to use for such an effort :). (link); Former Baylor Title IX staffer Lyons has filed a $750K lawsuit against the university on the grounds of retaliation. The Ole Miss Athletic Foundation received $30M in cash gifts and $5M in new pledges in FY17, while the Forward Together capital campaign has raised $172M of its $200M goal. Senior Assoc. AD for Development & Executive Director of the Ole Miss Foundation Carter: "Our donors will be excited, we believe, to see their gifts at work through construction and renovation of our athletic facilities, giving Ole Miss student-athletes the highest quality of experiences both on and off fields and courts. Our generous, loyal and dedicated fan base continues to fuel new heights of excellence." Overall, the university's endowment increased by 12% to $675M while private gifts to Ole Miss totaled $153.6M. MANDTVR: VR & 360-Degree Experiences
Auburn officials were aware of complaints about former softball HC Myers and his son as early as September 2016, according to The Plainsman, which also reports that former student-athlete Nemeth felt ignored following meetings with AD Jacobs and Exec Assoc AD/SWA/Title IX Coordinator Jenkins. Nemeth: "How the administration handled it is probably the worst part because if they were doing their job in the first place, really making sure their departments were being run by the Auburn Creed, these problems would not have to be faced by 18- to 23-year-old girls." Nemeth adds that Jacobs has refused to meet with her for a second time while subsequent interactions with Jenkins have been rude and dismissive. Discussing a "quarantine" with the team in which Jenkins allegedly threatened players for illegally obtaining copies of text messages that they claim proved misconduct concerning AC Myers, Nemeth says Jenkins made the players feel "really bad," adding: "She almost made it out to be our problem that this happened and not the adults in charge." In another segment of its "Candid Coaches" series, CBS Sports asked more than 100 MBB HCs and ACs: "Which assistant is most likely to be a very successful head coach?" Duke AC Scheyer tops the list (13.9%), followed by Virginia's Sanchez at No. 2 (12%), Miami's Caputo at No. 3 (10.2%), Gonzaga's Lloyd at No. 4 (5.6%), and TCU's Patrick and Florida's Nichols tied for No. 5 (3.7%). On Scheyer: "The best way to be a successful head coach is to get a good job. And he'll get a good job. All the Duke guys get good jobs." On Sanchez: "He is a good combination of a guy who can go get you a top-50 guy, and someone on that staff keeps identifying three-star guys who can get it done at a high, high level. They can out-recruit some people and out-evaluate others. That's a pretty damn good combo in my opinion." And on Caputo: "He gets players, and I like him because I don't think -- like, he's always been very sincere, very straightforward. Doesn't bullshit a whole lot. I think he'll be a really great head coach. He's learned from a guy [Jim Larranaga] who's done a tremendous job at any level. He's not coming from one of the bluebloods." (link)
The long term future of the Rocky Mountain Showdown between Colorado and Colorado St. is unclear, as the two schools are taking a short term approach to the FB rivalry in order to stay flexible with their non-conference scheduling. The Rams and Buffaloes will play this year, next year, and 2019 in Denver before CSU plays host in 2020. The two programs will not play in 2021 and 2022 for the first time since 1994, as CU’s non-conference schedule has been completed without the Rams on it. However, the schools have reached a "verbal agreement" to schedule a home-and-away series in 2023 and 2024, but after that, both parties aren’t anticipating a renewal of the rivalry on an annual basis. (link)
Buffalo rejected a $100K donation from Swim alumni to save the program after the athletic department announced the team's termination due to department spending cuts back in the spring. The reductions, which include Men's Soccer, Baseball, and Women's Rowing, aim at saving $2M a year. The donation would cover the Swim program's operating expenses for the upcoming season, but UB Prez Tripathi ultimately found it would not have produced the amount of budget savings the department needs. (link)
Cornell is suing former FB HC Austin for $100K plus 9% interest for each year the current CFL coach delayed paying his contract penalty. Austin, who made $285K per year during his three years in Ithaca, was required to pay the $100K penalty for leaving the team before his contract's January 2015 end date. Despite entering an agreement with Big Red AD Noel to delay payment until he sold his Cayuga Heights house, Austin has failed to fulfill the terms of his contract clause. (link)

With an AD hire imminent at New Mexico, here's how the Albuquerque Journal's Grammer framed the opportunity when it first opened over a month ago. Grammer commented on how engaged & interested the Lobos fanbase is in the process, what skill set is necessary & ideal right now for the Lobos, if local ties will play a big role & if there’s anything that would be surprising on where the search ends up. It'll be interesting to compare Grammer's thoughts to the final selection. Listen by clicking the link. (link) (12:05)
