From the Principal's Desk

Dear MESA Families,
Parents, we are now in week ten and moving full steam ahead! It seems like a short while ago we were all filing into the building for Open House and now we are just under one week out before parent teacher conferences (October 11th and 12th from 4:30-7:30). Needless to say, the school year is surging. Special thank you to all of the parents, guardians, and families who attended the mandatory Family Orientation. I personally thank you for your time and partnership. We were able to review the new family handbook and review changes to school policy in particular attendance, discipline, and homework. After our orientation, we saw a significant improvement in attendance and in particular scholars arriving to school on time (8:30 am). Parents, thank you for being the difference. When scholars come to school on time it teaches them that school is a priority and it also teaches them the importance of being on time which will translate into being on time when they get jobs and being on time for high school and college classes, this is training! :)
A few short but important announcements as we continue to show strong progress this year.
Please talk to your scholar about appropriate usage of social media. I encourage all parents to strongly consider if your scholar NEEDS to have access to social media. If you choose to allow them this privilege I strongly encourage that you have full access to their pages and accounts. We have seen an increase (nationally, locally, and here at MESA) in drama amongst scholars that is taking place over social media.

Intersessions is coming and we are offering a week-long academic and enrichment camp for MESA scholars. This means that scholars will receive academic support in the area of literacy (reading) and math in the morning followed by an afternoon of enrichment activities. The camp will be run by MESA educators who will use scholar test data and report card notes to help scholars grow. Enrichment activities will include arts and crafts, music, and recreation.
Registration closes at the conclusion of Parent Conferences on October 12th.
Space is limited so don't delay to register!

MESA will be hosting the Scholastic Book Fair on October 2-12 in the MESA Library. Scholars will have designated time at the fair; however, parents may visit the fair before and after school. We would like to invite both students and parents to purchase books to help us accomplish the goal of raising $700.00! Upon reaching our goal, we will be able to
host bigger and better fairs in the future!

The school bus is considered an extension of school and all norms apply on the school bus that apply in the classroom. In order to help ensure that scholars have a safe bus ride to and from school, here are the norms you can discuss with your scholar.
- Get on/off the bus only at your assigned bus stop.
- Respect the location where you are waiting for the bus.
- Follow all safety rules while waiting for the bus and while riding the bus.
- Respect and obey the driver.
- Respect all scholars on the bus.
- Remain seated at all times.
- Use “inside voices”. No loud talking or other noises.
- Use appropriate language.
- Keep aisles clear of any items or body parts.
- Rowdy play is not allowed.
- Never throw anything out the bus window.
- Keep hands and head inside the bus.
- No eating or drinking on the bus.
- Rear seats must remain empty.
- Windows may be down only halfway.
- Nothing may be transported on the bus that doesn't fit in the scholar's lap.
The following serious behaviors may result in suspension from the bus and possible expulsion: any behavior that causes a serious safety hazard, possession of a weapon or facsimile, possession of drugs and alcohol, fighting/assault which results in injury, possession of pyrotechnic devices or numerous write-ups for not following ridership rules. Other types of violations of the rules with respect to the bus may result in an immediate suspension from school for a period of time up to five (5) school days.
