Doors Open Day 23 to 24 September

The iron cross in the Memorial Chapel, originally from the Grassmarket gallows.
This year the annual opening of Edinburgh buildings includes Old Saint Paul's, which will be open for visitors on Saturday 23 September from 9am to 5pm, and Sunday 24 September from 12.30pm to 6pm.

Please invite friends and neighbours to visit Old Saint Paul's, they will be very welcome. Founded in 1689, Old Saint Paul's is the original Episcopal church of the city, and was once a Jacobite stronghold. The present 19th century building contains much of interest, such as the ironwork cross which once stood by the gallows, the last thing seen by condemned Jacobites; the WWI Memorial Chapel naming 150 men and 1 woman who died; and Alison Watt’s award-winning painting ‘Still’.

Please come yourself, and give an hour during those times to act as a welcomer. If you can help, please contact Fr Ian rector@osp.org.uk, or the Office office@osp.org.uk.

Funding Palliative Care for Cancer Patients in El Salvador

A volunteer with a cancer patient at the hospital.

This year, Old Saint Paul’s has donated £750 to the Divine Providence Cancer Hospital, San Salvador, to pay for palliative care for patients approaching death.

Founded by the Carmelite Missionary Sister Luz Isabel Cuevas, the hospital is an efficient and deeply caring hospital, run on a shoestring, which survives through the generosity of benefactors. The Sisters care for all ages, from very young children to the elderly. Within the hospital, they have created an atmosphere of warmth and hope where many patients find peace in their last days. The Sisters are dedicated, immensely hard-working, practical, humorous, and utterly committed to their profession and to the Gospel which inspires them.

The £750 donated by Old Saint Paul’s has since been matched by donations from other sources, and the money raised to date will pay for nearly 400 hours of palliative care for some of the region’s poorest and most marginalised people.

For more information, see the posters in the church and the church hall, or visit the hospital's website.
