Law Extends Civil Statute of Limitations for Victims of Sexual Violence
by Laela Kashan, KASAP Staff Attorney
"When perpetrators are raping one in five women in Kentucky, we all have a duty to stand up against them. State Senator Wil Schroder of Wilder has done just that. Thanks to Sen. Schroder’s leadership, victims of sexual violence in Kentucky will now have more time to seek justice against their perpetrators in civil court. Earlier this year, Sen. Schroder sponsored Senate Bill 224 which extends the statute of limitations to sue perpetrators who prey on children and adults. The bill passed unanimously in both the House and Senate and was signed by Gov. Matt Bevin. The new law’s effective date was June 29, 2017. The final bill, as signed, can be found at: http://apps. sos.ky.gov/Executive/Journal/execjournalimages/ 2017-Reg-SB-0224-2283.pdf".
Hurricane Harvey:
National Disasters and Sexual Assault.
It is important to remember the correlation between natural disasters and sexual violence. Our thoughts are with those who are being impacted by Hurricane Harvey.
"Disasters like Hurricane Katrina and Hurricane Harvey can exacerbate the factors that lead people to commit sexual assault, like poverty, displacement, lack of housing, and lack of a law enforcement presence." Read More >>
Response to Charlottesville. WCSAP Staff Respond to White Supremacist Violence in Charlottesville..."We spent time together at our staff meeting today. It was our first opportunity to be present with each other around the bigotry and terror that happened in Charlottesville over the weekend. We write this statement as a staff together. There are no words that can articulately describe our fear, sadness, and outrage; while at the same time, we find ourselves overwhelmed with the amount there is to be said.
First, we condemn the violence of white supremacists this past weekend. THIS IS NOT ACCEPTABLE; THIS IS NOT NORMAL." Read More >>
