CTSI KL2 Career Development Program
Seeks Applications

The CTSI KL2 Career Development Program is accepting applications for KL2 awards to begin on June 1, 2018. The program provides two years of support for the early career development of multidisciplinary clinical and translational scientists. The goal of the program is to promote the successful transition of KL2 scholars to an independent career as a clinical and translational investigator, generally by means of an individual K or R award.

Read more about the program and find the Request for Applications (RFA) on the CTSI website.

Indications of Interest are due on October 2, 2017.
Applications are due on November 6, 2017.

Do Drugs that Keep HIV Patients Alive
Damage Their Brains?

Researchers from the University of Rochester Medical Center recently set out to understand whether drugs used to keep HIV patients alive could be damaging their brains.  Early results from their clinical study suggest that these drugs do not pose a threat to the brain - at least in the short term.

Ever Better Mentoring
Hybrid Online Course for UR Faculty

The CTSI, in conjunction with the Office of Faculty Development and Diversity, announce the hybrid online and face-to-face mentoring course, Ever Better Mentoring. The course is designed to both reinforce and introduce common issues faced by mentors of research trainees and students. Ever Better Mentoring includes a Blackboard™ component with videos and case-based scenarios, complemented by an in-person workshop to encourage exchange of best practices and persistent challenges.  Both seasoned and inexperienced mentors have found the course valuable.

The course is open to all University of Rochester faculty; register through Blackboard. For questions please contact Oksana Babiy at Oksana_Babiy@urmc.rochester.edu.

Emergency Department
Research Associate (EDRA) Program

The Emergency Department Research Associate (EDRA) Program is a resource available to investigators who wish to access the more than 100,000 patients seen in the Strong Memorial Hospital Emergency Department each year. The program utilizes undergraduate enrollers from the University of Rochester, all of whom have completed thirty hours of rigorous classroom training, to screen and enroll patients in the Emergency Department between the hours of 8:00 am and 12:00 am seven days per week.

Enrollment can also be arranged in any of the Strong Hospital Urgent Care Centers in the Rochester area as well as the Highland Hospital Emergency Department. Now entering its 22nd year, the program has successfully screened and consented thousands of patients into dozens of clinical research study protocols of varying types and complexity.

The EDRA program operates under the umbrella of the Research Subjects Review Board’s (RSRB) approval for subject consent and enrollment. A full-time administrative staff, including a supervisor, administrative director, and PhD faculty director oversee the program. Robust quality assurance and quality improvement processes further ensure protocol compliance and documentation accuracy.

For more information or to receive a services quote to utilize the program, contact EDRA Supervisor, Joseph Glick at Joseph_Glick@urmc.rochester.edu.

Proposals Due for NCATS Collaborative
Pre-Clinical Development Programs

NCATS is accepting proposals to collaborate with its Bridging Interventional Development Gaps (BrIDGs) and Therapeutics for Rare and Neglected Diseases (TRND) program scientists.

BrIDGs scientists collaborate with researchers to advance candidate therapeutics for both common and rare diseases into clinical testing. TRND researchers and their collaborators move new therapeutic candidates through pre-clinical testing, from lead optimization to submission of an investigational new drug application.

Proposals are due September 30, 2017.

NCATS Funding Opportunity:
Bench Testing Therapeutic/Indication
Pairing Strategies (UG3/UH3)

This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) invites applications for support of pre-clinical studies to repurpose existing experimental or FDA approved drugs or biologics (existing therapeutics) that have already begun or completed at least a Phase I trial.

The hypothesis for proposed studies must be developed using innovative processes to identify the therapeutic/indication pair. Examples include independent crowdsourcing strategies (such as, Industry-Provided Assets) or any website that lists experimental therapies, or use of computational algorithms.

The initial UG3 award will support the development of milestone-driven rigorous, pre-clinical target engagement and/or efficacy studies. Once UG3 pre-clinical milestones have been met, the UH3 award may be made to support clinical trial planning: this includes complete planning, design, and preparation of the documentation necessary for implementation of Phase I and/or Phase II clinical trials for a new therapeutic use.

The first application due date is October 30th.
