Keystone Faith Formation Book Study
5 Wednesday evening: October 4 – November 1
Faithful readers, doubters, questioners, come - Save the Dates!
Wednesdays in Battson Hall - Fireside Room; 7-8:30 PM

Grab yourself a copy of Rev. Barber's " The Third Reconstruction: How a Moral Movement Is Overcoming the Politics of Division and Fear" by Rev Dr. William J. Barber II and Jonathan Wilson-Hargrove, and give yourself five evenings to come together with Keystone friends, new and old, for our fall study.

I could not even put this book down on my vacation reading.  A great conversation starter for our discernment to next mission at Keystone, in these rocky times.  We will gather in deep discussion as we pray and discern our way to how we are called to live out our faith in these divisive days.  Read it not for a formula but an inspiring read, to help us examine how God is calling us to act in our particular Keystone setting, and with the blessing of two new interns joining us for our year ahead.

Our church is active with the Interfaith Economic Justice Coalition (IEJC).  One of our partners there, Christ Episcopal in the University District, is helping Seattle host Rev. Barber for a two-day training November 6 & 7,  and there is a public talk Monday Evening November 6.  The book study will wrap up November 1, so save the date for us to go hear Rev. Barber on November 6.

(Festival of Hope is November 18 & 19)

All welcome- come enrich this Keystone study with all your faithful tough questions, October 4- November 1!

– Pastor Lauren

Amber hired as FAN's New Organizer

Congratulations Amber! This announcement from Faith Action Network:

We are delighted to announce that we have hired Amber Dickson to join the FAN Staff as a full-time Organizer for our statewide network! Amber will be familiar to many of you—she served at FAN in 2014-15 as an intern with the Justice Leadership Program of the United Church of Christ. During that time, she got to know many of you through FAN organizing and events, discovered her passion for criminal justice after visiting Monroe prison, and learned about advocacy at the state level as well as federal during Ecumenical Advocacy Days. She continued as a JLP intern to do a second year of service at Children’s Alliance, where she worked with the organizing team on Advocacy Camp, Have a Heart for Kids Day, legislative research and advocacy, and other special projects. During both years, Amber worked with the Racial Equity Team to have an equity impact on public policies across many issues. She spent last year in New York City reconnecting with family, attending Sayville Congregational UCC on Long Island and volunteering with the Refugee Action Committee. Amber is originally from South Carolina, spent her teenage years in Spanaway, and graduated from Seattle Pacific University. She is excited to begin her work next week—you can send her a note of welcome to dickson@fanwa.org.

A message from our Governing Board Co-Chairs Rev. Carol Jensen & Rabbi Aaron Meyer: When last April the FAN Governing Board first discussed the possibility of expanding our staff capacity by adding an organizer, we had the audacity to dream about raising the funds and getting somebody on board by September 1. With everything else going on this summer there were many moments when we doubted that would happen. We are so excited to welcome Amber, who will bring her passion for social justice, organizing experience, and unique perspectives to this position. We invite you to participate in this capacity building for FAN and support Amber’s work with us by contributing whatever fits with your own circumstances, as we close the gap for the extra funds needed to secure her position for the next three years. You can contribute securely at the orange Donate button at the top of our home page: fanwa.org.

We thank those of you who have contributed significantly already. We hope you will all share the excitement we feel at this next step for FAN’s work for justice.

You're Invited: Sept. 21
Meet the Interfaith Economic Justice Coalition's New Organizer

Great news from our Interfaith Economic Justice Coalition. Through the generous support of Unite Here Local 8, SEIU Local 6, and Rainier Valley Corps (RVC), along with Keystone and interfaith partners, Puget Sound Sage has hired an organizer to support the work of the IEJC . Welcome Yolanda Matthews, who started in August with her training academy at RVC. The two-year RVC fellowship is designed to cultivate leaders of color and strong community organizations in Southeast Seattle.

Interfaith Economic Justice Coalition
monthly meetings - 'love of neighbor'

Opportunity to witness for justice:  Interfaith Economic Justice Coalition monthly meetings are held the third Thursday of each month at 10am, with Keystone represented by Pastor Lauren, our Justice Leadership Program Interns, and Keystone folks.  You are welcome any month to come check out a meeting and see if this witness calls to you, as we embody our 'love  of neighbor'. Iris Chavez (JLP '16-'17) helped us support concession workers at Seatac Airport and security workers at Amazon, as they fought for dignity on the job and the wages they were due; most are workers of color, women, immigrants and refugees.

Next monthly meeting : September 21 at 10-11:30 AM.

The location rotates between south Seattle churches, libraries, and non-profits- contact Pastor Lauren for more information: lauren.cannon@keystoneseattle.org
