Global Ocean Refuge System

Summer 2017 Update

.
We are thrilled to honor three marine protected areas (MPAs) with our Platinum Global Ocean Refuge award this year: Papahānaumokuākea Marine National Monument, Tubbataha Reefs Natural Park, and Malpelo Fauna and Flora Sanctuary. Our distinguished GLORES Science Council used science-based criteria to evaluate promising MPAs and found that these sites meet our strictest standards for protecting marine biodiversity. Platinum Global Ocean Refuges exclude fishing, feature smart-design choices that safeguard marine wildlife, and involve local communities in their management. Because they are exemplary MPAs, it is our pleasure to welcome them as our inaugural Global Ocean Refuges.

Announcing our GLORES award winners has been a highlight of our time at the 4th International Marine Protected Areas Congress. For all of our conference updates, please follow the Marine Conservation Institute’s Facebook, Twitter, and blog, as well as live coverage at OpenChannels. We’ll have many more Global Ocean Refuges to come!

Papahānaumokuākea Marine National Monument

Covering over 1,500,000 sq. km of the Pacific Ocean, Papahānaumokuākea Marine National Monument encompasses ten small islands and atolls known as the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands. It is home to over 7,000 marine species, of which about 1,700 are endemic to the area. Presidents G.W. Bush and Obama enacted the strong, protective regulations that make this marine national monument a very worthy recipient of our GLORES Platinum award.

Malpelo Flora and Fauna Sanctuary

Over 500 kilometers off the coast of Colombia lies Malpelo Island, the centerpiece of Malpelo Fauna and Flora Sanctuary. Its rugged landscape teems with wildlife, including corals, shark species, and marine mammals. Malpelo Fauna and Flora Sanctuary is internationally acclaimed for its outstanding natural value and we are excited to honor its achievement with a GLORES Platinum award.

Tubbataha Reefs Natural Parks

Tubbataha Reefs Natural Park is an MPA located in the Philippines’ portion of the Coral Triangle, an area known for its stunning biodiversity. It is home to more than 1,200 marine species, including many species that are threatened and need the park’s strict no-take protection against anthropogenic stressors. Tubbataha Reefs Natural Park is an incredible MPA and well-deserving of its Global Ocean Refuge Platinum award.
