-September festivals: Downtown doesn't quit when fall comes. September is packed with festivals. Make sure to check out Thunder Bay Winery's Harvest Festival (9/16), Alpena Book Festival (9/23), and downtown's first ever beer festival, Sunrise Suds Tap Takeover (9/30).

- Speaking of beer festivals... The Fresh Palate is looking for volunteers (pourers, traffic directors, and more) for their Sunrise Suds beer festival on Sept 30. Visit here to request more info.


-Chowder & Chili Cook-off 2017: It's coming. Save the date for Saturday, October 14 from 12- 5 pm. Interested in competing? Email anneg@alpena.mi.us for a registration form.
 
-Looking for work? Many downtown businesses are looking for help, including Take 5 Deli, Myer's Fashions, Masters- La Londe Shoes, and As You Wish. Please reach out to individual businesses for more info.

-The latest on the traffic saga: Last night at its meeting, City Council rescinded its vote from September 2016 to implement two-way traffic on Second Avenue between Chisholm and Carter Street. So for now, one-way traffic is here to stay.

-New DDA Board Members! At its meeting yesterday, the DDA Board recommended Joanna Cooper renew her seat on the board and Jeffrey Mindock (Artistic Director at Thunder Bay Theatre) join. They both must be approved at City Council's next meeting on September 18.

9/8: Reception for featured artist Brandinn Keetch. 5:30- 7 pm at Thunder Bay Arts Council.
9/14: Alpenopoly Grub Crawl. Details here.
9/9 & 9/16: Fall Mum Fundraiser at Alpena Farmer's Market. 8:30 to 1 pm behind City Hall.
9/16: Thunder Bay Winery's annual Harvest Festival. Grape stomping, live music, food vendors, and more on closed 2nd Avenue. 4-9 pm.
9/16: Tunnel to Towers 5K Run & Walk. Details here.
9/18: The Life of Leon Czolgosz. Learn about the assassin from Alpena who killed President McKinley. 6:30 pm at Alpena Public Library.
9/23: Alpena Book Festival. Festival details & locations here.
9/29: Alpena Art Walk. The final walk of the summer. 5-8 pm in downtown.
9/30: Sunrise Suds Tap Takeover. Beer, music, food all on closed 2nd Avenue.

From the director's desk...

If you've walked downtown in the last few weeks, you've seen the sign hanging in Country Cousin's window: Closing Sale.

While I never had the pleasure of meeting Betty Douville Johnston, the store's owner who passed away this spring, I can say for certain that that zest for life and love of people that everyone talks about was still alive and well in the store.
