Highlights from the Software and Data Carpentry Community Calendar
Community News
New Software Carpentry Lesson Release
We are pleased to announce the latest publication of the Software Carpentry lessons - release Version 2017.08. Although most of our lessons are fairly mature, we had almost 100 new contributors. This release includes linked ORCID identifiers (visible on the Zenodo page next to each author’s name) and has allowed for individuals to opt out of contributorship. Genomics Lesson Bonanza and Bug BBQ
We are currently reorganizing and updating the Data Carpentry Genomics lesson. To get the material release-ready, we are holding a 24-hour Issue Bonanza on 31 August to identify bugs and issues such as typos and broken links, followed by a 48-hour Bug BBQ on 18-19 September to clean everything up for publication. CarpentryCon
We now have a bid form to find a venue for this 2018 event. Please share this information as widely as you can so that we end up with the best option for everyone. Once we have locked in a location, we will start to build the event in earnest. We welcome your input on what kinds of talks and breakout sessions you want to see at CarpentryCon. A summary of the most recent community calls can be found here.
HPC Carpentry
Community interest in HPC Carpentry continues to grow. If you want to follow what’s happening in this space, there is a Google Groups’ mailing list for interested people to join. There is also a GitHub repository with a draft outline curriculum, and an open GitHub issue which lists and links to existing HPC training courses that have already been taught. Please add any others you know about. Peter Steinbach recently wrote a blog post about his experiences teaching HPC in a Day.
Merger Update
The Software Carpentry Steering Committee and Data Carpentry Board are continuing to plan for the restructured, unified Carpentries organization. Watch for opportunities in the next few months to contribute your thoughts to this process.
Subcommittee Activity
Mentoring
As more and more new instructors are going through checkouts, Instructor Discussion sessions are being booked up as far ahead as the end of October. We are excited to see so many new and returning faces in the sessions. Please let the Mentoring Committee, who coordinate these sessions, know if you're having trouble finding slots.
The Mentoring Committee have also created an onboarding document. Instructors who are looking to become more involved in Carpentries' activities can use the document to learn more about the committee and how to host/co-host Instructor Discussions.
Upcoming Meeting: Infrastructure Subcommittee
Maintaining Our Lessons
Christina Koch will lead a discussion about lesson maintenance at the 20 September community call. Up for discussion will be the merger and its effects on lessons and how we can better reward the hard work of lesson maintainers.
Joinery
Carpentry Champions
Jonah Duckles and Belinda Weaver hosted a Carpentry Champions call on 22 August to brainstorm ideas for local community building. We had a great turnout with people from seven countries. We aim to run these regularly - check the etherpad for dates and times. Read a summary of the ideas from the call.

New Form to Upload Blog Posts
To make it easier for people to submit blog posts to Software and Data Carpentry, we have created a new upload form. Just paste in your text, upload your images, if any, add your contact details and leave the rest to us. You will have a chance to review the post before we publish it.

Pre- and Post-workshop Surveys
Kari Jordan has developed new surveys for Data Carpentry. Surveys are meant to be completed both before and after workshops to measure improvements in learners’ skills and confidence levels. Kari urges instructors to encourage learners to complete these as they contribute greatly to the long-term assessment of the worth of what we teach. Read more.
Unit Testing
Jason Williams started a thread on the Discuss list about unit testing in Python. Katy Huff’s repo Python Testing and Continuous Integration got the thumbs up.
