LSOE Launches New Online Course Series

The Lynch School of Education will launch a series of online courses for practicing teachers this month. Maria Brisk, Professor of Teacher Education, worked closely with the CTE’s Tim Lindgren and Aaron Walters to design and develop the project-based, highly collaborative, online courses. Check out the course trailer below.

New and Improved Spanish Placement Test

Two years ago Silvana Falconi, Assistant Professor of the Practice of Romance Languages & Literatures, set out to redesign the Spanish placement test that most students are required to take in order to continue their study of Spanish at BC. Falconi worked closely with the CTE and Research Services to run three pilots before launching the redesigned test in Canvas this summer for over 600 students. Falconi is confident this new test will do more to ensure students are matched with the most appropriate level Spanish course.

JFCT: Teaching After Charlottesville

Following the hatred and bigotry recently on display in Charlottesville, faculty across the country have been questioning whether and how they might address the current racial climate with their students this fall. For our kick-off meeting of this year’s Junior Faculty Conversations on Teaching (9/26 at noon) we invite faculty in their first years at BC to join us for a conversation about how we’re approaching our classes in the wake of Charlottesville. Further details and registration information on the CTE website.

Back to School highlights

The CTE welcomed more than 200 faculty and graduate student instructors to back-to-school programming at the start of the new academic year. We contributed to New Faculty Orientation, organized the Graduate Student Teaching Conference, and held a week of Back-to-School Boot Camp workshops. Participants described our programs as allowing them to “dive into elements of teaching in a very helpful, engaging, and constructive way.”

Pedagogy Book Group

All instructors at BC are invited to join our fall book group discussing How Learning Works: Seven Research-Based Principles for Smart Teaching. The group will meet four times in October and November (on Wednesdays at noon). Meetings will be informal and are meant to provide an opportunity to share reactions, questions, and thoughts about how to implement the principles introduced in the book. Participants who can commit to attend all four meetings will receive a copy of the book. Space is limited, so please indicate your interest by September 20.

CTE Mission & Values

As the Center for Teaching Excellence prepares to enter its fourth year, we have been actively reflecting on our role at BC and the values we bring to our work. That reflection has resulted in a revised Mission & Values Statement, now posted to our website. We welcome your feedback on the statement at centerforteaching@bc.edu.

CTE Staff Updates

The CTE is happy to welcome five new Graduate Assistants to our team: Adil Arshad, C.J. DeMille, Emma Hammack, Jessica Kim, and Xixi Ni. Read more about all five and the work they’ll be doing in the CTE on our website. We’re also pleased to announce that Aaron Walters has been promoted to Manager of Instructional Media. An award-winning documentary filmmaker and former Associate Director of University of Pennsylvania GSE Films, Aaron brings many years of experience in a range of media types to his new role in the CTE.
