In this issue: Three common causes of acne, a new face at StoneTree, and more...
From the teenager who doesn’t want to leave the house to the hormonal women who can’t believe they are dealing with a skin issue “at this age”, acne is a full drag!
We see a lot of it here at StoneTree, and most cases tend toward one of three causes:
The most common by far is a food intolerance. Dairy is the big one, but gluten, egg, and soy can also be culprits. Removing reactive foods from the diet will usually clear up the skin within 6-12 weeks. Testing for reactive foods is an easy blood test, and our new Pantry with gluten- and dairy-free foods and pre-made meals makes food intolerances easier to deal with.
Imbalances in flora can also cause issues with the skin. There are healthy bacteria all over our bodies--including on the skin--that keep problematic bacteria in check. If this is out of balance then the problematic bacteria can run amok. Getting them back in balance can help the skin heal.
Nutrient deficiencies are also common culprits. The nutrients that are really important for healthy skin include vitamin A, E, and zinc. Many teenagers can get themselves into low-grade nutrient deficiencies with diets high in junk food and low and fruits and veggies. Many a case of teen acne has been made better in our office by increasing these vitamins and minerals in their diet (see recipe below).
Dr. Maggie Pattillo, ND left a busy practice in Nova Scotia to move to the Collingwood area, and we're delighted to have her join the StoneTree team.
Dr. Maggie has a family practice, with a special interest in sports medicine and performance. She is already booking patients and starts September 12. You can learn more about Maggie here, and book an appointment here.
Recipe: Moroccan Sheppard’s Pie with Sweet Potato
Foods naturally high in Vitamin A are all the yellow and orange fruits and veggies. Foods high in zinc include lamb, beef and chick peas.
As we move into September with cooler evenings enjoy this lovely, warming dish which can be enjoyed in either a meat or vegan option.
INGREDIENTS
For the filling:
1 lb grass-fed ground lamb or beef (omit for vegan)
3 cups cooked chickpeas (or 2 15 oz. cans drained) (optional for meat version)
For skin issues, this product can’t be beat! The teenagers in our houses will not be without it, convinced it “heals zits overnight”.
With its main ingredients of aloe vera, tea tree, witch hazel, rosemary and Vitamin E, it often does!
We recommend it often at the clinic, not just for break-outs, but for scalp issues, as a face toner, and for wound healing and even fungal infections of the skin.
It is inexpensive and smells lovely!
Available at the front desk, local health food stores and online.
