D1.jobs
: New opportunities below at Vanderbilt & Holy Cross. Post your staff openings where thousands of administrators start their morning. Click here to learn more.
Fairfield Prez Nemec selects Central Connecticut State AD Schlickmann as the new AD for the Stags, "Paul is ready to bring Fairfield University athletics to great new heights. He will continue to build on the athletic legacy already developed. […] Paul stood out, not only for his experience and success across a variety of academic settings, but for his appreciation of our core values." Schlickmann: "The athletic infrastructure here is very good, what a great recruiting tool. I know there’s been a lot of talk and a lot of interest of getting basketball back on campus and that’s something we’re going to have to continue to talk about and figure out the viability of that."  (link)
Auburn Softball is under an internal investigation, per Assoc. AD for Strategic Communications Arner, which she says has "been a contentious process." Arner also commented on statements by Tigers AD Jacobs back in April that may have been "misleading" in connection to the investigation. Arner: "There's a big fear of admitting investigations because of what that does to the privacy of some of the people involved. He should have just said, 'We don't comment on investigations.' Publicly, he was just echoing the statements from when (AC) Corey (Myers) resigned, which does seem misleading." On the question of a reported three-year contract extension for former HC Myers, "I think there was a little misunderstanding. It was premature to say that there was a contract extension extended." (link)
Illinois AD Whitman penned to the Illini fan base on the decision to remove the 'War Chant' from athletic events. "Because I am one of you, on a personal level, I share part of your sadness with our recent decision to discontinue playing War Chant at our athletic events. Like many of you, I have fond memories of watching Chief Illiniwek perform, and War Chant was, to a large degree, the soundtrack of my football career. For me, both events evoked feelings of pride, unity, and confidence. As a younger man, I assumed the thousands of people around me experienced similar emotions – and, in fact, I think many did. […] How we make people feel matters here at the University of Illinois, where we strive to be a beacon for inclusion in an increasingly polarized world." (link)
Memphis AD Bowen Q&As with the Commercial Appeal's Calkins, when asked about the open Cal AD chair, "Not interested. At all." Bowen says there have been moments when he simply keeps his head down & notes the difficulty of being an AD. Believes there's no ceiling for Tigers FB given the love for FB in the mid-South, "So why try to define any limitations to it? Why not become the best football program we can possibly be? I know that’s possible. I’ve seen it happen, so why not?" In the same breath, Bowen notes the fragility of success on the gridiron & the challenge of sustaining success, "I see that as my personal responsibility to make sure that the trajectory of this program continues to climb and climb and climb." Sounds like over 20K season tickets have been sold & Bowen wants to average home attendance of 40K+. More. (link)
From the latest SBJ: Headliners Smith & Ourand take a look at market dynamics & back stories that led to the high-profile FB match-ups slated for this weekend. ESPN VP of Programming & Acquisitions Dawson points to the business opportunities for schools. Chick-Fil-A Prez Stokan says Alabama's Saban & Florida State's Fisher had some good back & forth before finally agreeing to play. (link); IMG College has put together a strong list of brands which will be involved in 12 fan fest setups around the nation this season. The Wendy's College Tailgate Tour will also include the likes of Coca-Cola, Nissan & Kellogg's. Interestingly, IMG was moving forward with the idea whether EVP for Sales & Marketing Judelson could get it sold or not. First stop: Oklahoma @ Ohio State on September 9. (link); There's also a lengthy piece on the value & history of live mascots as Butler's Blue III has become a staple of BU's marketing & licensing strategies. (link); IMG College SVP for Business Ventures Dyer has exited & plans to hang his own shingle once again. (link); The Golf Channel & the NCAA have reached terms to continue televising the Men's & Women's Championships through 2029. (link)
Addressing claims made by Rebel Rags that Mississippi State student-athlete Jones colluded with FB HC Mullen prior to Jones's meeting with NCAA investigators, Jones' attorney Shapley says categorically that "there was no collusion between Dan Mullen and Kobe Jones." Shapley adds that Jones met with investigators without a lawyer present and answered investigators' questions as honestly as he could. "Nobody instructed him to do or not do anything other than tell the truth and that's what he did." Jones told investigators that he received free Ole Miss gear from Rebel Rags during his recruitment, a claim both Rebel Rags and Ole Miss deny. Shapley's statements come in response to a RebelGrove.com report that alleges Jones's mom was overheard indicating to Jones's dad that Mullen was responsible for the current situation. (link)
Arizona FB HC Rodriguez indicates "there might be news forthcoming" concerning the construction of an indoor practice facility, a need Rodriguez identified upon arriving in Tucson in 2012. A statement from the athletic department confirms that UA is "in the first step of securing approval for a number of facility projects, including an indoor, multipurpose sports center." Details such as where the center will be located and when construction would begin remain unclear, but the project is expected to cost around $15M, and an entry on the UA Planning, Design and Construction list describes the facility as "a new building to provide safe all-weather practice for football and other sports. The multi-use facility is envisioned to benefit multiple sports which will also serve as a game day venue." (link)
Two NCAA committee chairs in the same department would certainly make for an interesting story. Such was the unique case at Wisconsin last year as Senior Assoc. AD for Sports Administration/SWA Gawlik had WBB & Senior Assoc. AD for Sports Administration Pientka led the Women's Tennis group. Pientka notes how helpful Gawlik was early in the process. Both provide lots of feedback, including Gawlik noting the challenges of not only watching hundreds of games (~300), but also managing the committee itself & serving as the main public voice. Pientka says she's up for more committee work, not so for Gawlik. More. (link)
The NCAA offers a comprehensive look at its enforcement investigations department, including its evolution from the Yale-Harvard Regatta to its function today. The profile focuses on the difference between the investigative unit's public perception and its day-to-day reality. "The information void has been filled by assumptions about who investigators are and how they do their jobs." To illustrate the difference, the piece contrasts the portrayal of Joyce Thompson in the film The Blind Side with her actions in real life: "In the movie, investigator Jocelyn Granger is a suited-up, dirt-sifting sleuth who interviews the student in a high-rise and won’t allow his mother to be in the room. In real life, Thompson interviewed Oher in his living room, not in a conference room. His father sat through the entire conversation. She doesn’t recall what she was wearing, but it wasn’t a suit." While there will always be disputes based on the complexities of so many cases, the NCAA asserts that the goal remains simple: get it right. (link)
Hurricane Harvey: Certainly not a comprehensive list of all departments & events impacted by the horrible storm, but a few notes. As you likely know, LSU-BYU FB is moving to the Superdome in New Orleans for its Saturday night kick. (link); Houston MBB HC Sampson has asked programs around the nation to donate shirts & shoes to those in need, hundreds responded with support. (link); Sam Houston State & Richmond FB will match-up on Friday in Waco. (link); Rice FB is headed to Ft. Worth & TCU's facilities until things clear up in Houston. (link); Prairie View A&M-Texas Southern has been moved to Thanksgiving week & the Panthers have suspended athletics operations for the week. (link); Houston's FB digs have experienced some flooding. (link); UTSA & Houston will stick to a 6p kick in San Antonio on Saturday. (link)
Experiencing the World presented by Anthony Travel
NCAA Prez Emmert is headed to Japan with 20 university presidents & other key sports industry leaders to meet with Japanese officials on the setup of a similar collegiate athletics system. Emmert first stopped in Taiwan for the World University Games, says he has no "grand designs" on expanding the NCAA into a "global enterprise," but will promote the co-existence of athletics & academics "with the right structure." (link); Speaking of the World University Games, Iowa Baseball is representing the U.S. & faces Japan today for the gold medal. Purdue has MBB duties & faces Lithuania tonight for the gold. (link)
presented by Anthony Travel
TV/Skinny/OTT: While it's not stateside, Amazon makes another noticeable play for sports rights, this time its key Bundesliga soccer & the 2018 Winter Olympics from South Korea that will be available on Prime for subscribers in Germany & Austria. (link); Further, Head of Amazon Studios Price at last week's Edinburgh international television festival, "People love sports – it’s big, it’s engaging, it really motivates people, so I think that’s a good opportunity. I think it’s definitely an opportunity we’ll explore." Price also noted his push to create a Top 10 global series, a la Game of Thrones. (link); New Pac-12 Networks boss Shuken chatted with Cynopsis Sports, "We are going to look at every opportunity. A lot of people are talking about the world of digital, streaming, OTT and all of those opportunities and those are all certainly things we are learning about getting into. But let’s not forget the core competencies of our current distributors and the core of the business because those things are not mutually exclusive, I don’t think." More. (link)
Pac-12 Hotline's Wilner continues his series on the Pac-12 Networks situation with grades from independent media analysts. Overall: C+, F, C-, A-, B-. SBJ's Ourand: "I expect the conference to look at some sort of direct-to-consumer offering (think an over-the-top service) to get consumers to sample its programming." Sports Media Advisors VP Shevchik: "It does seem like selling some equity to a partner who could provide negotiating leverage might make sense, depending on the valuation they can get." Wilner's take, "Each year we draw closer to that window (2022-23, new Tier I negotiations), the less reason exists for the conference has to abandon its current model. It would decimate the long-term value accrued at the expense of short-term cash flow." (link)
One AD who may know a thing or two about TV networks is Syracuse boss Wildhack given his lengthy tenure at ESPN. Alongside Colorado AD George & Clemson Deputy AD Neff, the trio looks at the topic of revenue generation through the lens of technology, campus-wide assets & other items of note during an AthleticDirectorU conversation at this summer's NACDA Convention. George points to the ability to package campus & athletics packages together to deliver solid returns. Wildhack super bullish on technological advancements. More. (link)
New Mexico State AD Moccia says it only makes sense to continue to compare his FB program to rival New Mexico, even though the financial framework is a challenge. Moccia calls the deficits before he arrived "mortgage payments" that are owed to the university & guaranteed game gridiron match-ups are one key way to pay off the balance. Over the next four years athletics owes the university $4.1M, "Light at the end of the tunnel, let's hope it's not a train." (link)
Georgia State Stadium, previously known as Turner Field, "The Ted", or Centennial Olympic Stadium, is now officially home to the Panthers, who host their first game in the revamped digs on Thursday. AD Cobb: "It’s transformational. It gives us a chance to take a football program that we’re still trying to grow, we’re still trying to develop, and we’ve got as nice of a facility as anybody." The 24K seat venue cost $50M to transition from a 50K-seat baseball park. More Cobb: "Our goal was real simple when we were able to acquire the property. When people came in for a football game, they didn’t look at it as a baseball stadium turned into a football stadium. The same way the Braves did when they went from the Olympics to baseball, we wanted people to say, 'Wow, this is an incredible football facility with a lot of history.'" (link)
Personnel: Rutgers Senior Assoc. AD for Finance, Administration & Planning Szul pegs Louisiana Monroe Assoc. AD for Business Operations VanDerzee as the new Assoc. AD for Finance & Administration for the Scarlet Knights. (link); As you likely know, former Baylor FB HC Briles got hired as OC for the CFL's Hamilton Tiger Cats for less than a day. Former SMU/Hawaii HC Jones is the HC for the Tiger Cats. (link); New Orleans MBB HC Slessinger inks an extension through 2023-24. Privateers WBB boss Davenport also signed an extension, her's through 2020-21. (link); UConn AD Benedict hires former Savannah College of Art & Design (NAIA) Men's & Women's Tennis HC Valor as his new Men's Tennis HC in Storrs. (link); Duke WBB HC McCallie could stick in Durham through 2020-21 as part of her extended agreement. (link); Southeast Missouri State MBB HC Ray also gets an extension, his through 2021. (link); Kent State FB HC Haynes takes a leave of absence expected to last 2-3 weeks. (link)
MANDTVR: VR & 360-Degree Experiences
New UT Martin AD McGuffin sat down for an interview with the school's student newspaper to discuss his background in athletics and his vision for the future of the department. McGuffin on what attracted him to UTM: "I think the thing that probably intrigued me the most was that I’m a small town kid from Southeast Kansas, and very seldom do you have a Division 1 school in a town similar to that. Raising our kids in a small town is important to my wife and I. When I researched it a little bit more, obviously Dr. Carver and his energy and positiveness probably put me over the top to try to get the position." A bit more. (link)
UCLA’s record 15-year, $280M deal with Under Armour, which includes a yearly $1M outlay for marketing purposes, is allowing the school to more than triple its previous marketing budget. With the additional cash, the Bruins are executing a number of marketing and branding initiatives, including advertisements on Metro Rail cars, a dozen billboards in the area, digital and newspaper ads, a digital commercial, outdoor "wallscapes" at The Grove over the holiday season, banners covering an elevator tower at The Americana at Brand, and a day-long event scheduled for Oct. 7 at Venice Beach that will feature the Bruins MBB and WBB teams. AD Guerrero on working with UA: "They worked shoulder to shoulder with us to come up with a comprehensive new branding initiative that maintains tradition but also evolves the UCLA brand. Once you have a cohesive brand look and story, you have to showcase it and talk about it. We intentionally built a dedicated annual marketing spend into the deal with that in mind." (link)
Nebraska has asked Fox Sports to stop running a 30-second ad as part of the network’s promotion of its new TV contract with Big Ten football. The ad, which was released on Twitter and is one of the 14 spots that the network produced for each of the league's teams, is based on the 1977 Stephen King short horror story "Children of the Corn." Senior Assoc. for Marketing and Communications Witty: "It’s not really the direction we want the brand to go in." (link)
A southern California private equity investor & former Western Michigan FB student-athlete gets some credit for match-making this weekend's USC-WMU FB kick a reality, no word if he also pitched in on the $1.2M guarantee. Trojans COO Lopes notes how he was already on the search for an opponent to open the '17 season. Broncos AD Beauregard says it's "incredible" to now have alum Gores in the fold after years of being separate from the university. Gores also recently donated $2M for a new scoreboard & more fixings in Kalamazoo. (link)
ESPN/ASN MBB analyst Adams posts a piece on Facebook, breaking down how mid-major MBB conferences can adapt to a changing landscape that no longer adheres to tradition. With major programs playing "88.6% of their non-conference games at home or at a neutral site," Adams suggests smaller conferences strategically stack their predicted best teams multiple times against each other by instituting an unbalanced league schedule and seeding conference tournaments based on their chances to get into the NCAA Tournament. Adams: "Traditions and times have changed and so we can either collectively sit and bemoan our fate or recreate a new path forward that meets our own goals while scheduling wisely and therefore earning multiple NCAA bids." (link)
Also Noticed: Deepest condolences to the Michigan State family after the passing of longtime & highly successful MBB HC Heathcote. (link); Unfortunately, thoughts are also needed for those at Stetson as FB student-athlete Blakely passed away yesterday after collapsing at practice. (link); Miami (FL) has launched a crowdfunding campaign in an effort to wrap up fundraising for a new indoor FB practice facility. Canes are 94% to goal ($34M). (link); Upwards of 10K tickets remain for Boise State's FB opener against Troy. (link); Same for Texas-Maryland in Austin. (link); Virginia FB will wear a "Hoos Together" patch to promote unity & diversity. (link); Michigan FB going all Maize for its match-up in Arlington with Florida. (link); Texas A&M continues to fight on the 12th Man lawsuit front. (link); Neat video from the BIG EAST celebrating the anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King's "I Have a Dream" speech. (link)
