But what about chewing tobacco, hookahs or e-cigs?  That’s healthier, right?

Well…
  • One plug of chewing tobacco contains the same amount of nicotine as 2-5 cigarettes
  • Chewing tobacco is highly addictive. People trying to quit chewing tobacco may require higher levels of Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT).
  • A one hour hookah session = 200 puffs
  • Just like cigarettes, pipes and cigars, hookah and smokeless tobacco products are linked to cancer, oral disease, vascular disease, stroke, and reproductive issues.
  • Since nicotine levels in e-cigs are usually lower than tobacco cigarettes, e-cig users tend to “self-titrate,” or inhale more deeply, or take more puffs to get the same amount of nicotine.
  • E-cigarette aerosol contains nicotine and other chemicals, including heavy metals. It is NOT harmless water vapor.
  • Even though some of the e-cig ingredients are approved as food additives, researchers are only beginning to study the effects of having them inhaled into the lungs.
  • Those who use e-cigs as a quit aid they have lower odds of quitting than if they used NRT or no cessation aids at all.
  • High school e-cig users are 2.7 times more likely than their peers to start smoking regular cigarettes.
  • These alternatives have been compared to cigarettes like a rattlesnake vs. a copperhead. You don’t want to get bitten by either one!
