Both Good And Bad Times Are Part Of Working Happy

A coach once said to me that we can expect life to go in a straight line, but in reality, life goes up and down and up and down again. That helped me to realize that down times are part of life and that they do not last forever.

Incorporating a sense of realism about your life having both good and bad times supports you in working happy. When the up times come, you can treasure them. When the down times come, you can learn from them and know that they will not last forever.

Here are some ways to make the most of the up times in your life and work:
  • be aware of what causes them, so that you can create them in the future
  • observe your behavior, attitudes and actions so that you can replicate them, even during down times
  • make the most of them and maximize their advantage to your career
And here are some ways to make the most of the down times in your life and work:
  • learn from them, both from the perspectives of what caused them and of how you handle them
  • create some intentions of what you can do in the future to mitigate them
  • accept them and be fully present to them to avoid making them worse than they have to be
A straight line in life may be safer and simpler, however, ups and downs can be fun and can enhance your experience of life. Think of the thrill of a roller coaster – navigating the ups and downs of life well may very well lead you to working happy!

What's Up For You?

We love answering your questions on your journey to working happy!

Q: I am finding myself “blocked” lately. When I work on a project and have to set a plan or write something, I find myself freezing and feeling unsure regarding how to get started. I do not know why this is happening. Do you have any suggestions, Ann?

A: Ugh, coming up against blocks is never easy. There could be many reasons why this is happening and it is worthwhile to explore them, so that you can determine the reason for it. Reasons can range from being tired and needing rest, being discouraged in your work and not realizing it, needing something new and different to work on or having a negative emotional reaction towards what you have been asked to do. Often, these reasons are hidden in your subconscious and need to be brought out.

Do you have a sense of what is happening in your case? If you do, explore it. If not, carefully observe your feelings as you work on the project. Observe your emotions, physical feelings and thoughts. You may find clues in your observation. Keep at it, so the block does not grow and get the better of you.
