Blue Hole Club Update

I cannot let this issue pass without commenting on the first serious incident we have had to my knowledge, in the history of the Blue Hole Club.  For those who have not heard, this occurred after the swim on Sunday 20th August.  The event was conducted in good conditions with all the usual safety precautions in place.  Standing on the line to have names taken, Les Lindsay commented to non-swimmer Mike Deephouse that he thought he was about to pass out.  This Les promptly did, and it was truly amazing to see Mike, incredibly a retired ambo right on the spot, and many others spring into action.  It was truly amazing because Les suffered a near fatal heart stoppage, and he couldn't have chosen a better place to have it.  The number of people who sprang into action are too many to list, suffice to say everyone did exactly what they were trained to do.  Les was ambulanced to Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital where he stayed initially in an induced coma, then for the rest of the week in intensive care and the cardiac ward.  He is now up and about, is home and came down to the beach to watch our swim on 27th August,  which everybody is really thrilled about. A full recovery is expected over the next several weeks, so he should be back swimming by next season.  Les and partner Toni Arthur express their extreme gratitude to all who helped save Les's life.

To more mundane matters, the season has only 3 comp. swims left until our Wind-Up day, which will be held on Sunday 24th September.  That day, conditions permitting, we have a GO swim, with a number given to your place on the line, and a number is then drawn from a pot, and if it is the same as your place on the line, you win.  Prizes for the season will be for 1st and 2nd for both A Grade and B Grade, plus a special prize for the Ken Dobson Award (given to the best contributor to Blue Hole) plus the raffle swim.  Perpetual trophies also go to A Grade and B Grade season champions. We have about $1,000 to give out in Gift Vouchers, and these will be also supplemented as usual with Gift Vouchers courtesy of the wonderful generosity yet again of Ross and Margy Hood of Commercial Stationery, Wangara,  Just remember you need to be financial to win!
We make this day a great event with all sorts of goodies, so everyone is expected to bring along platefuls of goodies.

ERGO MACHINES – MEZZANINE AREA OPERATIONS SHED

All the ergo machines on the mezzanine area have be serviced and repaired as much as possible by Gym Care this week. The repairs have been done to the best of their ability, as a number of parts had to be brought over from the US.
Please ensure that the ergo machines are utilised as intended as advice from GYM Care was that some machines were used when basically un-functional, in regard to their intended use, which increased damage to the machines.

Trigg Youth Update

The coming season is approaching fast with re-enrolment already underway and new members’ registration is on 16th September 2017. I have undertaken the role of Youth Manager for the season and will be working with all youth from 13 – 19yrs. I am looking for parents or some older club members who would like to support the youth by being on a committee to assist with the running of Sunday mornings, social functions and photography.

There are also development camps coming up for different age groups. The TOAD camp is for 13 – 14 year olds and runs from Monday 15th January 2018 to Thursday 18th January. Please consider if you are looking to learn about leadership opportunities for the future. Applications will be out early October and under 14 youth members are encouraged to apply.

The Rise Up camp is for 15 – 17 year olds which will run from Monday 8th January to Thursday 11th January. Under 17 and first year under 19’s are encouraged to apply.

There is also a coaching and development camp in Geraldton 24 – 25 January 2018 in Geraldton prior to the Geraldton country carnival on 26-27 January.
There are also opportunities for youth members from 14 – 18 to become Age Group Manager Assistants. If you would like to spend more time on helping the juniors at our club then this may be a potential role for you. You would be able to nominate your preferred age group to assist.

Do your interests lie in officiating? If so you are able to attend an officials training course and then be mentored on the beach at carnivals.
Do you have an interest in education then you might be interested in doing the instructors course and helping out with a Bronze or SRC course throughout the season.

The greater your involvement in the club the more you will get out of it. Plus it looks very good on a resume when looking for work.

We are also looking at targeting youth members who would like to train for the life-saving events of First Aid, Champion Lifesaver and/or Champion patrol for next year’s States and Aussies.
If you have been involved in the YIPS program please contact me so I can update your booklet and develop a plan to meet your next goals in the program.

We are trying to expand our Sunday morning activities to include: beach rugby, cricket, volleyball as well as team events to promote a greater involvement on Sundays. We have 16 Sundays that have no other events in the calendar so look forward to a fun filled busy Sunday morning program. A request if anyone has beginner stand up surf boards that they would like to donate to the club for use on Sunday mornings it would be appreciated. I can be contacted at jen_peter@bigpond.com or 0419952749.

MEMBER PROFILE – Club Captain Dan Humble

Dan has recently been selected as Youth Coach and Open Athlete  on the Surf Life Saving Great Britain High Performance Team. Find out more about Dan’s recent appointment and his achievements to date.

Q & A with Club Captain Dan Humble
Q. How old were you when you first joined surf club?
Way back in 1989.
Q. Can you remember your first individual gold medal and the event?
My first individual gold at a state level was in the open ski, 2014. Leading up to 2014, I had six minor placing’s in the open ski as well as multiply Australian and World Championship medals. To finally win the state title was a huge relief and a special moment in my surf story.

Q. You have been a High performance athlete for a number of years now that has seen you experience travel and competition overseas. What was your most memorable competition and where did it take place?
Aussies 2013, Kirra Beach, Queensland – The entire Trigg Island team were on form. The club was inches away from winning medals in the open men’s single ski, open mixed double, open men’s double, open men’s taplin and open men’s board relay. After so many near misses fortunately, Alana finished second in the open female ski and Recce, Brendon and I won the club’s second open ski relay title. That one race was a combination of years of effort by every Trigg Island competitor who put on the red, white and green cap and paddled for TI.

Q: I hear you have been selected as a Youth Development Coach for the GBR HP Lifesaving Squad. Tell us a bit about your connection with the GBR Team.
I first travelled to the UK in 2007 and was selected to represent GBR the following year. Since that point in time I’ve had the opportunity to race all over the world, make lifelong friends and create memories I’ll never forget. To now be in a position where I can give back to something that has given me so much is really important.

Q. What does the role entail and will it involve travel overseas?
As the Youth Development Coach my role is to assist the next generation to achieve their goals and be the best they can be.  At this point in time I’ll be travelling with the team to Rescue 2018 in Adelaide but prior to this I’m off to the UK on Thursday to work with the European Championships squad. They take on the rest of Europe in Belgium next month.

Q. What is your favourite part of Great Britain and why?
Cornwall holds a special place in my heart. The people, beaches and history all make it a place I could quite easily call home but the cold water and freezing winters mean I’ll always be on the plane back to Perth and Trigg Island.

Q. What motivates you to train, compete and be the best you can be?
At this point in time, time itself is the motivation. I’ve been extremely fortunate to share so many amazing moments with the Trigg squad. If we can create a few more then I’m more than happy to push the body and mind to the maximum.  One green box is never enough.

Q. Can you offer any advice to our up and coming aspiring athletes?
Eat real food, embrace rest, work hard and listen.

Help required - Looking for a Kiosk Supervisor

The club is seeking the services of a volunteer Kiosk Supervisor to manage the kiosk on Sunday mornings during the surf season.
Role:
The kiosk Supervisor will be required to facilitate/manage a volunteer roster of members predominately from the junior parents each Sunday morning.  The kiosk operates on approximately 4 volunteers (including the Supervisor) each Sunday.
Times:
The Supervisor is required to be at the kiosk at approximately 8.45am to open up and turn on the equipment.  The rest of the kiosk volunteers commence around 9.30am.  Finishing time is around 12.30pm which includes clean up.
General:
The kiosk last season provided chips and a sausage in a bun to members.  It is a traditional part of the club’s Sunday morning activities.  Without a supervisor or volunteers to help in the kiosk it cannot continue.  It is also a small fund maker for the club which contributes to the club’s operating costs.

Attention SLS Officials

Hello, myself and fellow second year paramedicine students from Edith Cowan University are interested in exploring the perceptions of WA Surf Life Saving officials regarding factors that affect their health and well-being at SLSA local carnivals and events.
We are aiming to explore how factors such as; environmental conditions, break allocation and fatigue (due to long working hours), affect the working capacity and ability of carnival officials. To do this, we’re interested in chatting to SLSA WA carnival officials over the phone for approximately 20-30 minutes.
If you’re interested in participating and voicing your opinions please click on the following link and complete this quick survey. The survey provides you with further information about the study and your role as a participant, as well as asks you to provide some contact details so that we may get in touch with you.

Contact Jessica Dalwood (chief investigator) to participate in this survey.
