News and events from the Highgate Society.

September 2017

MONKEY BUSINESS

If you go down to Highgate Woods this weekend your little monkeys can climb the trees with the climbing nets of Monkey-Do, as part of The Highgate Wood Community Day.  Nets are up on Saturday 2nd and Sunday 3rd September, with the main event on the Sunday, between 11 am and 4 pm. Other attractions include Punch and Judy; craft stalls; music; a dog show; various local charities and societies will present their policies including Highgate Society and the Neighbourhood Forum, so please come along and see our stand; but best of all it's free.  Go along and net some local carnival atmosphere.

BUILDING UNDERSTANDING

“Highgate Modern Homes”, on 16th and 17th September is an exhibition which shows how the historic village of Highgate and its surroundings are the setting for perhaps the largest concentration of modern homes in the UK.  Many are hidden away from view, due to local planning policies of the past, changing economic contexts and the pressure on land, but they can be seen in this showcase of contemporary architecture to be held at Omved Gardens, Townsend Yard between 12 and 5 pm on both days.  Admission free.

GRAPE HARVEST

The Highgate Society invites you to an Autumn Social to meet your neighbours, enjoy a glass of wine, and catch up with what’s going on in the area.  Come along on Friday 29th September to Highgate Society, 10a South Grove between 6.30 and 8.00pm – tickets on the door cost £5.

CHARACTER BUILDING

Living in a conservation area can be a mixed blessing - offering protection to non-listed buildings in designated areas, although this practice seems to be disappearing in some quarters.  Highgate has three such areas:  Camden, Haringey and Holly Lodge estate, and 2017 marks the 50th anniversary of this practice.  Love it or hate it conservation is one of the major functions of Highgate Society, and some of the key aspects of conservation as well as several local iconic buildings can be viewed at two open afternoons at 10a South Grove on October 7th and 8th between 2.00 and 3.30 pm at 10A South Grove.  Entry is free and includes tea and cake.
