Chemical Plant Explosion
Before Hurricane Harvey made landfall last Friday, the Arkema chemical plant, 21 miles from Houston, shut down production. Despite the shutdown, at around 3 am EST today, the Harris County sheriff notified Arkema of two explosions and black smoke in the air which would irritate the skin, eyes, and lungs. Officials have evacuated the area and are asking residents not to return until it is safe to do so.

Iraq
ISIL Ousted
The Iraqi military has removed the ISIL (Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant) presence from the governate of Nineveh. The operation to destroy ISIL control over the region began 10 days ago with the Iraqi assault on the town of Tal Afar, west of Mosul. Tal Afar fell quickly, and the remaining ISIL insurgents fled to the nearby settlement Ayadiya, where they were also quickly defeated. The Iraqi Prime Minister announced the complete liberation of Nineveh, leaving ISIL in control of only a few urban areas in Iraq.

WWII Bomb Found
More than 60,000 people were told to evacuate from their homes when a World War II bomb was found during construction work on Wismarer Street near the Goethe University Frankfurt compound on Tuesday. The bomb is called an HC 4000 and contains 1.4 tons of explosives. It's believed to be a British bomb dating back to Allied raids on the city and was designed to damage buildings more than a kilometer from the center of the explosion. The operation to defuse it is planned for this coming Sunday.
