EXPO CHICAGO 2017
TOO BIG TO BUY

In concert with EXPO CHICAGO 2017, Thoma Foundation Curator Jason Foumberg will participate in a panel discussion on the art of collecting with Nora Lawrence, Associate Curator at Storm King Art Center, moderated by Author and Sociologist of Culture Sarah Thornton. Presented by Northern Trust in partnership with Leslie Hindman Auctioneers, Too Big to Buy will examine the challenges of acquiring, exhibiting and maintaining large-scale work, from land art to net art. UNSETTLED
NEVADA MUSEUM OF ART 
Aug. 26 - Jan. 21, 2018

We are proud to support the Unsettled exhibition and publication at the Nevada Museum of Art. Over 200 works of art by 80 artists explore the diverse cultures and artistic practices of the Greater West. Organized by Curatorial Director JoAnne Northrup and iconic artist Ed Ruscha, Unsettled includes Thoma collection works by Georgia O'Keeffe and Gerard Curtis Delano, and will travel next to the Anchorage Museum and Palm Springs Art Museum.

PAINTED IN MEXICO, 1700-1790
LOS ANGELES COUNTY MUSEUM OF ART
Nov. 19 - Mar. 18, 2018

Supported by a grant from the Thoma Foundation, Painted in Mexico, 1700-1790: Pinxit Mexici will open at LACMA in November. With over 100 works on view, the exhibition represents the first effort to reposition the history of 18th century painting in Mexico. It will be accompanied by a fully-illustrated publication. Co-organized with Fomento Cultural Banamex, Mexico City, the exhibition will subsequently travel to the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

VIRTUAL VIEWS TRAVELS TO ORLANDO
ORLANDO MUSEUM OF ART
Sep. 15 - Dec. 31, 2017

The first major loan of digital works from the Thoma Foundation collection, Virtual Views explores the growing importance of electronic media in contemporary art through the pioneering work of artists using LEDs, LCD, and computer-generated imagery. The exhibition travels to the Orlando Museum of Art this month from the Knoxville Museum of Art. Curator Jason Foumberg will give a talk at the Museum in conjunction with the exhibition on October 1 at 1:30 pm.

NEW EXHIBITIONS IN CHICAGO:
SECOND SKIN & COLOR GAMES
Orange Door

This September, two new exhibitions open at Orange Door, both on view through Summer 2018. Second Skin proposes that artworks offer a fresh layer of symbolic representation, extending the virtual self in material, real time and place. Two new acquisitions, Leo Villareal's Particle Field and Jim Campbell's Data Transformation, will debut. An accompanying exhibition, Color Games features six artworks with color palettes generated by random processes. To schedule a school or group tour, please contact orangedoor@thomafoundation.org

MEET THE NEW FELLOW
BECKY BIVENS

The Thoma Foundation welcomes our new Research Fellow in Twentieth-Century Abstract Painting this month. Becky Bivens is a PhD candidate in art history at the University of Illinois at Chicago whose research focus is mid-century American abstract art, aesthetic theory and gender studies. She has previously worked in the curatorial departments at the Brooklyn Museum, SculptureCenter, and the Dalton Gallery at Agnes Scott College. Learn more about her here!
