Grow Some Good
Providing Educational School Gardens on Maui
In this Issue:

Happening In the Gardens
This year we have several new Garden Coordinators. Each month we'll feature one Garden Coordinator and the schools they support.

Introducing...
Jadda Miller, Garden Coordinator at Kihei Elementary School

Jadda has a BS in Sustainable Agriculture and Food Systems, and is currently working on an MS in Environmental Studies.

Jadda says:
My goal for the garden this year is continue with the goals and progress that were made in the years past, while remaining open to new thoughts and visions for the garden in the years ahead, allowing for it to become what the school and community envision it to be.

What I'm really looking forward to: learning more about is the Hawaiian language, culture and native plant varieties.

My favorite thing about working with kids is: I learn just as much, if not more, from them as they do from me. They are wonderful teachers.

My favorite thing about gardens is: the connection that happens between people and the Earth, which ideally leads to the cultivation of healthy food, soil, bodies, communities and environment.
My favorite fruit or vegetable that grows on Maui is an avocado.
and...
‘A‘ohe hana nui ke alu ‘ia.
No task is too big when done together by all.

Kihei Elementary School is Grow Some Good's first school garden, established in 2008. They have had 100% participation in the garden program for many years! This is the first year that the school is supporting the program by having Jadda work as a Part Time Teacher for part of her time. Jadda has classes spread over 5 days of the week and also supports the A+ program after school to let kids who love their garden time spend more time growing! The school has 768 students enrolled this year. Most students get to visit the garden every 2 weeks.

A Lesson from the Garden:
Can plants move? Yes!
Plants can move toward or away from water, the sun, and in response to gravity! This is called tropism. In the gardens, students observe plants growing up trellises, toward sunshine, or toward a water source. They share what they found and how it is a good example of tropism. Vining plants in our gardens include green beans, peas, watermelon, ipu, and lilikoi.

Things to Plant in October
For the gardener in all of us – get great gardening advice at a Kitchen Garden in Kihei Maui and see tips on what to plant in October.  October is 'Spring in Maui' for those living in the coastal areas.

Special Projects for Your Group
Want to share the joy of the gardens with your team? We can set up a fun and educational work day just for your group. Garden projects are great for youth organizations like sports teams and service clubs, as well as community groups and businesses. We can always use a hand in the gardens, and it’s a great way to spend time with your team. Please contact volunteer@Growsomegood.org to get involved.

Fuel Up. Do Good.

Grow Some Good is excited to have been selected as the beneficiary of the Ohana Fuels ‘Fuel Up. Do Good’ program. Starting this month, Grow Some Good will benefit from a portion of all sales at all Maui Ohana Fuels locations, through the end of 2017.  See their list of locations on Maui, and be sure to “Fuel up” at Ohana Fuels and “Do Good” for Grow Some Good!  Mahalo to Ohana Fuels for your generous support!

Many Mahalos

Thank you to the Central Pacific Bank Foundation for making a $7,500 donation to our school garden programs. These funds will support hands-on lessons in science and nutrition, further enhancing our alignment with classroom curriculum standards. A premier donor to Hawaii charities, the Foundation’s mission is to help strengthen Hawaii Communities by creating opportunities for our youth and fostering community social progress. Thank you for all you do to support Hawaii’s non-profit organizations!

We are thrilled to have recently been awarded a $5,000 grant from the family foundation Change Happens. Founded here in Hawaii, with grant making projects around the globe, the Change Happens Foundation helps innovative charities that work in the areas of science, the environment, education and social justice. We look forward to using these funds for our Grow It/Know It Healthy Harvest Program, which teaches students the nutritional content of the food they eat, and the ways nutrition can positively impact health. Thank you to the folks at Change Happens for having confidence in our organization!

Camp I Like You - a Garden-based Camp for Kids

We love supporting other groups who are Growing Some Good in our community! Camp I-Like-You is a garden-based outdoor kids camp hosted in Lower Kula that brings kids closer to nature through hands-on garden exploration, harvest-to-table snacks, art & crafts, fort building and other games.  The next camp is October 11-13 and features All Hallow's Eve decorations, mask making, canning and preserving and making herb-to-tea bundles.  $250/week or $60/day.  To reserve a spot for your child visit http://campilikeyou.com/  or contact aylah.loewenstein@gmail.com.
