Happening In the Gardens
This year we have several new Garden Coordinators. Each month we'll feature one Garden Coordinator and the schools they support.
Introducing...
Jadda Miller, Garden Coordinator at Kihei Elementary School
Jadda has a BS in Sustainable Agriculture and Food Systems, and is currently working on an MS in Environmental Studies.
Jadda says:
My goal for the garden this year is continue with the goals and progress that were made in the years past, while remaining open to new thoughts and visions for the garden in the years ahead, allowing for it to become what the school and community envision it to be.
What I'm really looking forward to: learning more about is the Hawaiian language, culture and native plant varieties.
My favorite thing about working with kids is: I learn just as much, if not more, from them as they do from me. They are wonderful teachers.
My favorite thing about gardens is: the connection that happens between people and the Earth, which ideally leads to the cultivation of healthy food, soil, bodies, communities and environment.
My favorite fruit or vegetable that grows on Maui is an
avocado.

No task is too big when done together by all.
Kihei Elementary School is Grow Some Good's first school garden, established in 2008. They have had 100% participation in the garden program for many years! This is the first year that the school is supporting the program by having Jadda work as a Part Time Teacher for part of her time. Jadda has classes spread over 5 days of the week and also supports the A+ program after school to let kids who love their garden time spend more time growing! The school has 768 students enrolled this year. Most students get to visit the garden every 2 weeks.
A Lesson from the Garden:
Can plants move? Yes!
Plants can move toward or away from water, the sun, and in response to gravity! This is called tropism. In the gardens, students observe plants growing up trellises, toward sunshine, or toward a water source. They share what they found and how it is a good example of tropism. Vining plants in our gardens include green beans, peas, watermelon, ipu, and lilikoi.

Special Projects for Your Group
Want to share the joy of the gardens with your team? We can set up a fun and educational work day just for your group. Garden projects are great for youth organizations like sports teams and service clubs, as well as community groups and businesses. We can always use a hand in the gardens, and it’s a great way to spend time with your team. Please contact volunteer@Growsomegood.org to get involved.
