'Collectors Tips':
Rather than looking at styles, this month 'Collectors Tips' will look at something a little more specific, something that was not only admired for quality of its craftsmanship, materials  & decoration but equally valued for its purpose and the treasures it contained; an object that once began life as an entire room morphed into more contained /portable versions.  Interested ...... take look at 'Collectors Tips' to find out what it can be!

COLLECTORS TIPS
Cabinet of Curiosities
The title above could not be more apt when talking about the very topic this months Collectors Tips is looking at. Whatever interest or 'obsession', how and where collections are displayed or kept is as important as the object itself!  Historically, it was the Kunstkammer' whole rooms of 'art & marvels' were set aside to contain objects of the natural world or fantastical curiosities that were said to be of an imaginary creature such as Whale bones were unicorn horns!  Pieces of furniture the 'Cabinet of Curiosities' emerged in the 16th century to contain the small curious although more rudimentary examples existed earlier.
Stuffed birds, fish, shells, corals, minerals &  skeletons were collected with many examples  held by European  monarchs and members of the  aristocracy.  Later collections also included sculptures and paintings. In 1587, the German Northern Renaissance artist & printmaker, Albrecht Durer, visited the Netherlands and,  apart from sending art back to his home town Nuremburg, various animal horns, coral & wooden weapons from the west indies were included in his private collection.
With historical developments in travel, transportation  & global trade,  collections of smaller items could be held in pieces of furniture, 'cabinates' that exemplified the changes in  styles and influences from around the world including forms of decoration, techniques  and exotic materials such as wood; Zebrawood & Coromandel from Ceylon & Guinas, ivory, mother of pearl,
lacquer from the 18th century fashion for all things 'chinoisery' and Pietra Dura,  an inlay mosaic of precious and semi-precious stones to create elaborate and integrate designs originating from the Italian Byzantine period during the middle ages.
                                    * Above: 17th Century Florentine Ebony Pietra Dura cabinet
By the late 18th century it was fashionable and, as a right of passage, for young aristocratic gentlemen to visit Europe to complete their classical education by taking the 'Grand Tour' introducing them to the art & culture of France, Italy & Germany. It was not unusual to find young women traveling on Grand Tours but due to climates & conditions tended to be a shorter length of time.
*mid 17th C. Flemish Ebony table cabinet Sotheby's London, 2011.
The Grand Tour could take between six months to a year to complete visiting the great art and, depending on wealth, purchased examples for their collections back home including curious from their tour. These collections were of great value reflecting status, wealth and intellect requiring the requisite rooms and cabinets to contain them.
*Robert Adam, 1776, 'The Kimbolton Cabinat',  Duchess of Manchester (V&A)
Whilst examples of the above may not be available to everyone indeed, the space required for the larger examples, how and what we choose to contain and display our collections is of equal relevance. Here a the Dorking Halls exhibitors offer some really interesting table top versions either as cabinets,  sets of drawers and or decorated boxes in wood or papier mache decorated with  bone, semi precious stones, painted enamels,  mother of pearl & wood inlays.

Age, rarity, construction, quality of decoration, makers and condition determines price from just a few pounds up to several thousands and therefore apply the same principles when searching for your ideal cabinet as when buying for your collection.
These are life long antiques that offer both purpose and decoration containing something that may be of personal, sentimental and or financial value and, passed on to relatives, carry that added value of ownership and remembrance......priceless!
