Summer is cooling off fast.
The fall equinox is just around the corner. Tomatoes, sweet peppers and summer squash should keep coming in as long as frost holds off. Fall has its perks- broccoli, cabbage, carrots, beets, cooking and salad greens, and meat all shine. Harvest Party is a celebration of it all and raises money to feed our local folks at the same time. Winter Meats and Winter Veggie Shares are open and taking sign ups. And on the fall equinox we will be doing a free farm tour as part of Blacksburg's Sustainability Week. So, cheer up! Details below...
- 6th Annual Harvest Party is next Saturday, Sept. 16. This is our yearly square dance called by Old Man Kelly with live old time music by Farm Use Only. The square dance is suited for all ages and levels.Your ticket includes dinner prepared by the farm kitchen, Tabula Rasa on Glade, and features homemade pozole (vegan and meat options available), rye bread, salad and apple pie. And the best part? Proceeds from the evening benefit the SNAP Double Value Program at the Blacksburg Farmers Market. Hand-crafted sodas and beers available for purchase by Rising Silo Brewery. Festivities start at 5 pm. Advance tickets ($16) are available at Rising Silo Brewery, the Blacksburg Farmers Market or online payable with card at gladeroadgrowing.com. If any are left, tickets at the door will be $20. Carpool if you can!
- Winter Meats Share sign up is now open! Share distribution includes monthly pick ups December through March of a delicious assortment of our chicken, duck eggs, Strong Earth Farm pork and Hoof Hearted Farm beef and goat. Our all our animals are raised outdoors on pasture in Blacksburg and not given any antibiotics or hormones. Poultry is fed certified organic non-gmo feed, pork is fed non-gmo feed, and the beef and goat are all grass fed and finished. Each monthly pick up contains roughly 15-20 pounds of meat and is packaged in USDA vacuum-sealed packs that should make it easy to fit in your home freezer. The photo below is an example of one of the monthly pick-ups from last season. The share costs $490 plus tax. Nice deal, eh?
- Winter Veggie Share now taking sign ups! The winter share starts November 9th. It runs 12 weeks through January this year for $180. Layout is in the form of a self-serve honesty farmstand at Glade Road Growing. This share is primarily a greens share (lettuce mix, kale, Asian greens, arugula, spinach, etc) but we will also have our carrots, salad turnips, roasting turnips, onions, salad radishes, herbs, garlic and other winter veggies until our stock of these runs out. The winter share has limited availability and typically sells out in advance. Don't get stuck with scurvy again this winter- get the winter greens share!
- Free farm tour in conjunction with Blacksburg's Sustainability Week Friday, Sept 22. A great way to celebrate the first day of fall. During the tour we will look at some of our gardens, orchard, and see the chickens, ducks and pigs, and make up answers to all your burning farming questions. Please wear appropriate clothing and footwear. Tour is rain or shine. Added bonus: Tabula Rasa on Glade will be grilling that day so you can get some hot farm food for dinner after you burn off all those calories chasing JP around the farm. So days of being topless and eating sweet peppers as big as your head may be coming to a close but know that we are still here for you with food and fun through the fall. Farm stand is open Tuesdays and Fridays 12 noon til 6 pm and we are at the Blacksburg Farmers Market Wednesdays 12 noon til 6 pm and Saturdays 8 am til 2 pm.
