Have you noticed that most clients show some rotation, or twisting, on the way from the hips to the head? Along with activities and postural habits, this comes from lying on one side or the other during the last trimester. Though sometimes innocuous, at other times this rotation contributes to problems in a hip or shoulder that must compensate by reaching around farther than normal. Keeping that hip or shoulder happy may require releasing the spinal rotation.
Because each psoas attaches to one side of the spine, it pulls that side forward when tightened, causing the torso to twist toward the opposite side. Gently releasing a tight psoas can have a powerful effect on spinal alignment. There are many ways to encourage a psoas to release.
External and internal obliques also create spinal rotation. Specific pressure along the iliac crests and, sometimes, along the ribs can help them let go. Like most psoas work, this can be done through the sheet.
Watch for a new class on untwisting spines in 2018!
