Caribbean Wellness Day 2017 - Today, September 9th

Caribbean Wellness Day 2017
Caribbean Wellness Day (CWD) 2017 focuses on the Youth under the theme “Securing a Future Generation through Eating Healthy and Not Smoking” with the slogan "Be fresh, be cool, reduce the risk."

A Message from Dr. C. James Hospedales Executive Director of CARPHA and Special Advisor to the HCC - Youth is a crucial period for establishing positive health and social behaviours. It is a time when young persons aged 15-29 years, transition from childhood through adolescence to independent adulthood. It is a period when they undergo emotional and physical changes. Although our Caribbean youths are generally healthy, a growing number of factors influence their health. These include family and community, environmental factors, socioeconomic factors, and health factors such as communicable diseases, violence and injury, body weight, physical activity, nutrition and substance use.

Poor health in this group can be detrimental to national economies, through direct economic losses for treatment and indirect costs of lost productivity. It is therefore critical that the health and well-being of our young people are promoted and protected as a critical ingredient to the social, health and productivity agendas for the Region. Read the full Message here.

Side Event at the 72nd UN General Assembly: Childhood Obesity - A Development Time-bomb:

Learning from SIDS to accelerate multi-sectoral action in support of the 2025 NCDs targets and the SDGs
Friday 22 September, 2017, 1.15 to 2.30 p.m. Trusteeship Council Chamber.

On the occasion of the Seventy-Second Regular Session of the United Nations General Assembly, The Permanent Mission of Barbados to the UN, The Permanent Mission of Canada to the UN, The Caribbean Community (CARICOM), The Pacific Island States (PSIDS), the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Healthy Caribbean Coalition (HCC), invite Heads of Delegations, Permanent Representatives and Experts to attend Childhood Obesity – A Development Time-bomb: Learning from SIDS to accelerate multi-sectoral action in support of the 2025 NCDs targets and the SDGs

The Caribbean and Pacific small island developing States (SIDS) are sub-regions of the world with particularly high burdens of obesity and non-communicable diseases (NCDs), which threaten the achievement of sustainable development in these already vulnerable countries. Obesity is a disease in its own right, but it is also a major risk factor for many of the NCDs, and there is growing concern, specifically, about the alarming rate at which childhood obesity is increasing. Caribbean and Pacific SIDS have been focusing on this issue at the highest level. This Side Event will provide an opportunity to share the experiences of these regions, and others, in providing an enabling and less obesogenic environment for their people, especially the children.

Monday 18 September, 18:00 - 19:30 | preceded by a reception from 17:00 - 18:00. Madison Ballroom, The Westin Grand Central, 212 East 42nd Street, New York
This side event, held on the margins of the 72nd UN General Assembly, will explore the opportunities available for implementing actions that will support the achievement of the NCD target in the SDGs, the overarching health goal, and other relevant health-related targets. Panelists will specifically focus on the interlinkages between health and NCDs with other sustainable development priorities (e.g. poverty, nutrition, environment, gender, and trade and economic growth), the necessary approaches and responses to ensure “win-win” solutions for health and other sectors, and the investment needed to drive these actions forward.

US CDC-PAHO Standardized Hypertension Treatment Project (SHTP) Barbados Pilot Officially Handed Over to the Barbados Government

The US CDC-PAHO Standardized Hypertension Treatment Project (SHTP) Barbados pilot was officially handed over to the Barbados government on Wednesday 30th August.
CDC Lauds Programme to Control Hypertension

A United States health official is predicting an improvement in the health of Barbadians, as well as the economy, as Government looks to expand a programme to combat cardiovascular diseases (CVD), including heart attacks and strokes.

Dr Lorna English of the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said the Standardized Hypertension Treatment Project (SHTP) undertaken over an 18 month period beginning in 2014 was such a success that it became a model for a broader global programme, Global Hearts, a collaborative effort between the CDC and the World Health Organization (WHO), along with other partners, aimed at scaling up prevention and control of CVD, especially in developing countries.

CALLING ALL CARIBBEAN CANCER ORGANISATIONS
The HCC will be working with the American Cancer Society’s Global Prevent20 initiative to mobilise Caribbean Cancer societies around tobacco control.

Prevent20 is a global coalition of cancer groups calling on governments to raise tobacco taxes, the single most effective tobacco control intervention. The movement’s name is in recognition of the more than 20% of all cancer deaths that are attributable to tobacco use – and completely avoidable.

Barbara McGaw, regional leader in tobacco control advocacy and HCC’s Tobacco Control Advisor as well as the volunteer Tobacco Advisor at the Jamaica Coalition for Tobacco Control (JCTC), will be leading this effort in the region. Currently two cancer societies are members of Prevent20 and we will be reaching out to cancer societies across the region to join this global movement, with the aim of at least one cancer CSO per CARICOM country. Smoking prevalence among 13-15 year olds in the Caribbean is the highest in all of the Americas. Young people are heavily influenced by price. Cancer organizations have powerful and trusted voices to spread a simple message - Tobacco taxation works. When prices increase, tobacco products become less affordable and people smoke less.

Cancer societies who join Prevent20 will:
  1. learn about the benefits of tobacco taxation in plain, non-technical language;
  2. learn how to use persuasive arguments to counter tobacco industry claims;
  3. leverage the experience of colleagues in the cancer community;
  4. see how taxation can contribute to attaining global NCD reduction targets.

How Alcohol Industry Organisations Mislead the Public About Alcohol and Cancer

How Alcohol Industry Organisations Mislead the Public About Alcohol and Cancer
The relationship between alcohol consumption and cancer has been disputed by the alcohol industry (AI) and its affiliated organisations. At the same time many AI-funded organisations, most commonly ‘social aspects and public relations organizations’ (SAPROs), disseminate health information with the stated intention of informing consumers and encouraging ‘responsible drinking’. Such organisations are portrayed as delivering on the AI’s corporate social responsibility (CSR) goals, but it has been argued that these organisations’ activities are in fact aimed at maintaining profits by promoting ineffective interventions, misrepresenting the evidence, and attempting to influence public perceptions in ways that favour industry interests.
