New Directors Programme 2017/18 open for registrations

Skills for Care’s New Directors leadership and development programme is now open for registrations. It’s for new and aspiring directors of adult social care with statutory responsibility. The programme supports a successful transition into the role of Director of Adult Social Services within local government.
New Directors has been developed in partnership with the Association of Directors of Adult Social Services (ADASS) and is designed to meet the specific needs of those undertaking the Director of Adult Social Services role. It aims is to shape the leadership techniques of new and aspiring directors to enhance their skills and develop new ones. It also gives both new and aspiring directors the opportunity to learn from each other in forming learning networks to support their work.  Further information on the programme is available here.

Improving people's experience of adult social care

The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) has launched a consultation on its guideline on improving the experience of people who use adult social care services. The new guideline says adults who need social care should feel in control and be able to live life as they want. The consultation closes on 3 October 2017 and NICE expect to publish the guideline in February 2018.

Invitation to a NICE event – resource impact

Wednesday 27 September, NICE Offices, Level 1A, City Tower, Piccadilly, Manchester M1 4BT. Registration from 9.30am for a 10.00am start, finishing at 3.30pm.
NICE is running a learning event on how it estimates the cost or savings of our evidence-based guidance and what this means for commissioners and service providers.  The event is aimed at colleagues who work in operational hands-on finance and commissioning/contracting roles. It will give you the opportunity to learn more about the work of NICE and you’ll be able to:
  • See the tools we have available to help you plan for and implement our guidance
  • Find out more about how our guidance is developed
  • Learn more about how health economics is used in guidance development
  • Ask our team and business analysts (who develop our resources) questions
  • Network with other like-minded colleagues from across the NHS about our guidance

Setting Fair and Equitable Pay and Grading Structure

Case Studies for Chief Social Worker Annual Report
For the 2017-18 Chief Social Worker annual report, the Department of Health would like to once again feature a selection of case studies written by you. This year they are looking for examples of:
  • strengths based practice approaches, or other innovative social work practice methodologies;
  • successful  career development and staff retention programmes;
  • examples of effective integrated approaches ; and
  • hospital social work, particularly its impact on prevention and reducing delayed transfers of care 
They will be contacting some local authorities in the next few months for specific examples – however, in the meantime, if anyone has any case studies they would like to share for possible inclusion please submit a maximum of two sides of A4 text, font size 12 to : chiefsocialworkerforadults@dh.gsi.gov.uk
The Department of Health would like the case study to include: 
  1. An outline of the approach/model, and how and why it was developed;
  2. Key outcomes / success stories that have emerged as a result; and
  3. Any lessons learnt or next steps following the implementation of the new approach.

PHE highlights 8 ways for local areas to prevent mental ill health
New tool identifies the most cost-effective programmes to help prevent mental ill health in local communities.

Public Health England (PHE) has today (30 August 2017) launched a ground breaking new tool for local public health teams identifying the most cost effective mental health programmes. One of these 8 initiatives is an innovative resilience programme in schools that results in an estimated saving of £5.08 for every £1 invested (over 3 years).  Further information is available here

NW ADASS / LGA/ ECIP : Delayed Transfer of Care Counting Workshop

NW ADASS have been working in partnership with the LGA and ECIP and we are pleased to announce we will be delivering a DToC Counting Workshop on the 23rd October, at Friends Meeting House, Manchester chaired by Dwayne Johnson (Director of Social Care and Health, Sefton Council) and delivered by Elizabeth Sargeant (Clinical Lead - Integration, ECIP). Action on A&E Masterclass: Systems Leadership: getting change when you’re not in charge
Thursday 19th October 2017, 10am-1pm (registration from 9:30am); The Queen’s Hotel, Leeds, LS1 1PJ Systems Leadership is about how you lead, how you make change happen, and how you keep it going, when you’re not in charge.  This half-day masterclass, to be delivered by Debbie Sorkin, is about Systems Leadership and how it might help you.  Debbie is National Director of Systems Leadership at the Leadership Centre, a national charity housed in the Local Government Association.  She leads a national Systems Leadership programme that draws together the NHS, local government, emergency services, social care, public health and other sectors.  To register and for more information, please click here

Leading Change, Adding Value Care Workers Conference
