Flooding Support Services Update

The City of Windsor continues to recover from last week’s rain event. As of Wednesday morning, the 311 Call Centre had received 5,442 basement flooding reports both online and over the phone. See map of flooding call distribution.
Latest Collection Information:
More help is on the way for removal of flooding goods from city streets.
10 extra trucks are being brought in by GFL Canada, bringing the total number of trucks to 30, three times the normal number for garbage collection.
City officials are also cancelling recycling collection for the remainder of this week, so all available personnel and equipment can concentrate on removing the flooding materials. Residents who have recycling at the curb now or were planning to put out as scheduled Friday or Saturday are asked to take the recycling back in and store it until their next scheduled pick-up in two weeks. The City apologies for the inconvenience but trusts that residents agree the potentially hazardous flooding materials take precedence over regular recycling or yard waste.
Regular garbage collection is continuing, although some delays might be experienced.
Residents are also advised that the Bulk Furniture Collection is on hold until further notice due to the flooding event. Please watch for posted updates.
Ongoing:
The Public Drop-Off Depot at Central Avenue is open and accepting flood damaged materials, such as carpet, padding, dry wall, furniture, and baseboards free of charge. However, Environmental Services reports that wait times can be significant at times. The Public Drop-Off is open Monday to Saturday, 8am to 5pm.
Yard waste collection for the month of September is also cancelled so that all available resources can be diverted to flood clean up. Residents are asked to place flood damaged items to the curb (not the alley) as soon as possible. Cooperation in preparing the flood material will allow us to get to as many homes as possible, as soon as possible.
Note: Flood damage pickup is for those who do not have a paid contractor working on their properties, as paid contractors are responsible for taking any damaged materials to the landfill.
Curbside Collection Preparation Details:
- Roll carpet and padding in small bundles approximately 4’ in length.
- Bundle, bag or place in pails/boxes any building materials such as pieces of drywall, baseboards.
- Appliances must have doors secured shut.
- Collection crews will not pick up loose material. All loose items must be placed at the curb in garbage bags weighing no more than 20 kilograms (44 pounds). Bags should not be stacked but rather placed side by side. The hard-sided garbage container by-law will be waived for flood collection.
- Keep household chemical waste, paint cans, and other chemicals in a separate pile. They will be collected by a separate truck from the truck collecting flood items.
- Place items to be collected in an orderly manner, side by side as much as possible. Avoid piling items on top of each other.
- Wherever possible, avoid parking vehicles in front of flood material. Collection crews require clear access to items set out for collection.

Basement Flooding Protection Subsidy

The City of Windsor makes improvements annually to the complex system of underground pipes, sewers and catch basins. However, these improvements alone cannot completely protect a home from basement flooding. With increasingly frequent and severe weather events related to climate change, it is essential that residents take the appropriate action to reduce the risk of basement flooding on their own private property.
The City is offering residents a financial subsidy to install a sump pump with sump pump overflow and/or backwater valve(s) and/or disconnect foundation drains from the floor drain.

Open Streets Windsor 2017

Join us again for the largest free recreation program in the city's history!
In 2017, designated streets in the City of Windsor will be closed to traffic and open to people of all ages, abilities, social, economic backgrounds to enjoy.
What's new?
Where is the route?
- Open Streets covers an approximately 8-kilometre span from Sandwich in the west to Ford City in the east.

What is Open Streets about?
Open Streets are unique events that have been held in over 100 cities in North America and involve the temporary closure of roadways to vehicular traffic, allowing people to use them for a host of healthy and fun physical activities like walking, cycling, yoga, dancing and fitness.
The goals of Open Streets Windsor are to:
- Encourage active transportation and physical activity;
- Encourage community building activities;
- Promote community-led active living initiatives;
- Showcase recently improved streetscapes;
- Provide an opportunity for local businesses and organizations to participate along the route.
How can I get involved?
We are looking for volunteers who are fun, friendly and willing to assist along the route. Duties include greeting residents and visitors, providing directions and supervision of roadway barricades. Shifts are 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. or 1:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. and you can sign up online.
Are you a business or organization looking to gain exposure for your product or service? Become a Community Partner by filling out the online application to participate in the event. Activities along the route should be free, and promote health, physical activity, arts and culture!

He’s going to help show you how to be safe around trains and train tracks.
We all know that railway tracks can be a tempting to use as a shortcut. What you may not realize is that it’s not only very dangerous, but it’s illegal too!
Last year in Canada, 66 people were killed or seriously injured as the result of trespassing on railway property. Don’t be a statistic.

Fall Hours & Programming at Adventure Bay

Temporary Closure for Park Maintenance, September 5-13:
Adventure Bay will be closed from Tuesday, September 5 until Wednesday, September 13 for our annual comprehensive maintenance. Note: This closure does not affect the Windsor International Aquatic and Training Centre (natatorium/fitness centre) portion of the facility.

Prisoner of war handcuffs which were used on Private Louis DesRosiers, following the raid at Dieppe, France, August 19th, 1942. DesRosiers, who was born and raised in Windsor, had joined the Essex Scottish in 1939 as a cook for the unit.
Prisoners of war from the Dieppe Raid, such as DesRosiers, were first tied in ropes from Red Cross packages for two months, and later chained in handcuffs. The prisoners were able to secretly remove the handcuffs using their dog tags or the tab from a tin, such as a tin of meat. Therefore, prisoners often only wore the handcuffs when in view of German guards. Gift of Louis DesRosiers 1967.19
An exhibit entitled Sacrifice and Courage: the Dieppe Raid Remembered is on display at the Chimczuk Museum until the 31st of December.
