From the Desk of Dr Graeme Edwards (PhD) - Preparatory Headmaster

Dear Parents, Staff and boys,

Welcome back-Bouncing back-Building resilience in boys
Welcome back to school and the final term of the year. What a joy it is to have our school filled with the voices of boys and the energy that accompanies their arrival back at school. Together with the sense of spring and the change of season is the often daunting realisation that a busy term awaits us. In as much as childhood is often idealized as a carefree time, youth alone offers no shield against the emotional hurts and traumas many children face. Children can be asked to adjust to a new teacher, deal with bullying by classmates, or even dealing with a bereavement or trauma at home. Add to that the uncertainties that are part of growing up, and childhood can be anything but carefree. It is argued that the ability to thrive despite these challenges arises from the skills of resilience.

The good news is that resilience skills can be learned. Writers suggest the following behaviours: Firstly, as adults, role model resilient behaviour by talking around issues and seeking a balanced perspective. These actions that can be learned and reinforced over time. Teach your son the skill of empathy, or feeling another's pain. This includes the building of a vocabulary of feelings. Cultivate strong family and school networks to support your child. Sticking to a routine can be comforting to children as routine builds security – a much needed fortress during tough times. Finally, children and young adults seek guidance and wisdom from the adults in their lives. Conscious of this important responsibility, let us as the adults in their world, work collaboratively to guide and correct, to support and yes, build resilience.

I wish all members of the St David’s community a happy and meaningful term.

We had a very successful SA Marathon Champs at Pietermaritzburg in August.

Under 8 boys (2km)

  • Aiden Honke                      2nd place (silver)
  • Ethan Duncan                    3rd place (bronze)
  • Kai Davis                            5th place

Under 10 boys (4km)

  • Jess Webber                       6th place (Jess is an U9 competing in the U10 category)

Under 12 boys (6km)

  • Theo Dreyer                       6th (2nd Under 11 in the Under 12 category)
  • Nicolaas Swart                   9th (3rd Under 11 in the Under 12 category)

The SA Marathon champs 2017 event was well supported with over 500 paddlers from under 8 juniors all the way through to senior adult paddlers from across the country.  The organizers made it very special by announcing each junior paddlers’ name as they raced across the finish line. The experience gained was hugely beneficial for each boy in their preparations for:

World ICF marathon champs (9th September), the 3 remaining Gauteng school league races (in October & November) and the interprovincial SA Schools Sprint Kayak Championships next year.

Building from this momentum our team training will continue through the August holidays and we are starting with the preparations for training sessions for prep and high school boys who would like to try the sport with the view to joining the Prep and High School team.

Would you like to leave a lasting Marist Legacy through a Bequest to the St David’s Marist Foundation?
The spirit of Marist education has been shaping the lives of children for two hundred years and a bequest in your Will to the St David’s Marist Foundation will ensure that this spirit continues to deliver quality education – the power of a bequest stretches far into the future and beyond a lifetime.
Such as bequest is for you if:

  •  You believe in the spirit of Marist Education and want to ensure St David’s future viability and strength
  • Long-term planning is more important to you than an immediate income-tax deduction
  • You want the flexibility of a donation commitment that doesn’t affect your current cash flow
  • You wish to ‘pay it forward’ and leave a lasting legacy

Please click here for the St David's 'Leave a Marist Legacy' Bequest information brochure.
As part of your free Will Maraschin Attorneys will be able to advise you in terms of including a bequest to the St David’s Marist Foundation

REFLECTION FOR THE WEEK

My brothers and sisters. Consider yourselves fortunate when all kinds of trial come your way, because you know that when your faith succeeds in facing such trials, the result is the ability to endure.  Be sure that your endurance carries you all the way, without failing, so that you may be perfect and compete, lacking nothing.
