          SEPTEMBER 2017 NEWSLETTER
Vol 2 No 8
[If you're viewing this on a Tablet or Smartphone it is probably best to do so in 'landscape' format]
____________________________________________________________________
I hope you all had a good August despite the rather indifferent weather and are now looking forward to our autumn/winter lectures, special interest days and visits. The Golden Anniversary Luncheon to celebrate fifty years of The Arts Society née NADFAS (which we first mentioned in the JUNE NEWSLETTER)  will be held in the Duchess’s Stand at Epsom Racecourse on Friday 20th April 2018. Epsom's Duchess’s Stand is an excellent venue and the after lunch speaker will be Loyd Grossman President of the Arts Society.
Tickets will be £55 pp. All proceeds from the day will be devoted to increasing the grants we are able to award to Young Artists through the Patricia Fay Fund. Ann Madden has the names of members who have expressed an interest in attending. If you would like to join us please confirm to her your wish to attend, at the September meeting.
If you are not coming to that meeting, please contact her on 020 8642 3129 or via e-mail by clicking on ajmadden7@gmail.com. An invitation letter with full details will be sent out later in the year to everyone on Ann’s list.  Meanwhile, I look forward to seeing you all at the Riddell Hall on 21st September for a peek behind the boulders of Stonehenge.

Chairman The Arts Society Walton on the Hill
..... and now news of that Lecture in September....

     Inspired by Stonehenge

Speaker: Julian Richards

Julian Richards studied archaeology at Reading University and has since worked as a professional archaeologist, in commercial archaeology, for English Heritage, for the BBC and as an independent. He is a fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of London and was awarded an honorary doctorate this July. He has been involved in teaching and outreach projects, lecturing widely in continuing education, to groups and societies and to special interest tour companies.

A career in broadcasting involved researching and presenting 'Meet the Ancestors' and 'Blood of the Vikings' for BBC2, plus 'Mapping the Town' for BBC Radio 4. He is author of a number of English Heritage publications on Stonehenge, including previous and current guide books to the monument and landscape. He is Guest curator of 'Wish you were here' an exhibition of his own extensive collection of 'Stonehengiana' which is currently on display at the new Stonehenge Visitor Centre.

Stonehenge is the most celebrated and sophisticated prehistoric stone circle in the British Isles. This lecture explains why Stonehenge must be regarded as architectural in its layout and construction, embodying techniques that for

centuries convinced antiquarians that it could not have been built by ‘primitive’ ancient Britons but must be a product of ‘sophisticated’ Romans. Julian also explores how, over the last 2 centuries, Stonehenge has
inspired painters, potters & poets. Indeed, Blake, Turner, Constable and Moore are amongst those who have all been drawn to this magnificent ruin, resulting in a diverse catalogue of images and impressions. Finally, Julian will look at Stonehenge as a global icon and how its instantly recognisable stones now grace tea towels in Wiltshire, phone cards in Japan and stamps from Bhutan!

        SPECIAL INTEREST DAY

     Thursday 2 November 2017

Art and Architecture of the American West
by
Roger Mitchell

Tickets for our next Special Interest Day
will
first go on sale at 9:45 am
Thursday 21 September 2017
price £23.00 pp

Join us for what should be a fascinating and rather unusual        Special Interest Day in November. Roger Mitchell will explore the history, terrain and buildings of the American west including Anasazi Cliff dwellings, Spanish churches and Elaborate Victorian buildings as well as Frank Lloyd Wright's Taliesin West.

The art will include Thomas Moran 1837-1926 "The Turner of the American West" who emigrated from Lancashire and explored and painted the extraordinary places like Yellowstone and the Grand Canyon. His paintings were purchased by Congress helping the Americans to appreciate the grandeur and colour of their heritage. Other great names in American Art will feature, many of whom are hardly known on this side of the Atlantic.

For more details of this intriguing Special Interest Day - which includes refreshments on arrival plus a light lunch, wine & coffee - and to learn about our speaker, Roger Mitchell, click here.
The two action pictures immediately above are by another featured artist, Frederic Remington 1861-1909.

      IMPORTANT INFORMATION

JOHN RUTTER’S CHRISTMAS CELEBRATION

AT THE ROYAL ALBERT HALL

MATINEE PERFORMANCE – WEDNESDAY 6 DECEMBER 2017

Tickets £38.00 including coach.

As you know, later this year we're hoping to go to John Rutter's 'Christmas Celebration' after a few years’ break and, despite what it says on your Diary Cards, the correct date is Wednesday 6 December!

Our application for
Tickets was successful and we've been provisionally allotted sufficient for one coach party. These are like gold dust to acquire and are only being held for us until the beginning of next month, whereas we are not due to sell Tickets until 19 October. Because of that timing, we shall need to know whether there is sufficient interest in the event at the September meeting. If NOT, the tickets will have to go back.

There will be a list for you to register your interest in attending the Concert which will NOT
be binding but will give us an indication of the number of people who would like to come. If you are unable to attend in September, please ask a friend - who will be there - to put your name(s) down. Provided we have enough interest, tickets for the Concert will then be for sale at our October meeting on a strictly first-come-first served basis from 9:45 am.
The tickets (which we were lucky to get) are for seats in the Front Circle which, we have to warn you, are high up on level 3 (lifts available). The bonus is that you will get a very good view as they are fairly central and are also less expensive. On the seating plan for the auditorium (right) the Front Circle is depicted in dark blue.
If you have any queries about this visit, contact Eva Hobday
on 01737 812406 or click on: evahobday@googlemail.com

        LIVERPOOL 2018 !!
Yes you’ve guessed it, we hope our Tour next year will be to Liverpool - in June. it came top of your British Isles’ suggestions earlier this year. We've alternated between the British Isles and Europe for several years now and some of our older members may welcome the fact that no flights are involved! We propose to travel there and back by coach, stopping for a break ‘half way’ on both journeys at a place of interest, also giving everyone the chance to stretch their legs, have some lunch and generally freshen up.

Although David Tinkler will be standing down at next year’s AGM, he has already set the ball rolling and has received a very exciting proposal from Success Tours which we are now discussing with them. It includes a chance to see the Terra Cotta Army (Northern squad?) which will be on display in the city for much of 2018 AND, by popular request, a day in Chester with lunch on the river, plus a separate day in Port Sunlight and, if we can fit it in and still remember the tune, a Ferry Across the Mersey.

Many of us have never visited Liverpool, so this will be a wonderful chance to do so, amongst friends too. If we’re really lucky, we’ll be accompanied by an experienced Arts Society Guide. Since becoming European Capital of Culture in 2008, Liverpool has been transformed, and is certainly worth a visit. The city is awash with attractions, boasting more museums and galleries than any other UK city apart from London, and has many unique historic buildings, arts centres and sports facilities.

Our plan is to circulate full details of the Tour in late September/early October via a special MailChimp e-mail, with a view to selling places at the October meeting when, because of other Ticket sales, we will arrange a different time in order to  save any ‘conflict’ – possibly  directly  AFTER the speaker.

David will deal with that, but of course we're still seeking a replacement for him, hopefully able to take over LIVERPOOL 2018 and see it through. So, once again, I am asking whether you think that person could be YOU? If you DO please contact me on 01372 727482 or via e-mail by clicking on:
seymourworld7@gmail.com when I'll be happy to outline the Tours’ Secretary's role and benefits.

I therefore look forward to hearing from you.

....LATE NEWS....
On Thursday morning, many of us enjoyed a most interesting Visit 'behind-the-scenes' at              The National Theatre, and here is a picture of some of us in ... er ... 'National costume'?
It was a well organised and most educational day thanks to Eva Hobday's hard work. After lunch we formed 2 groups for a Guided Walk of the South Bank which brought to life a district many of us had probably passed through 'a 100 times' before but had just taken for granted, without time to look around and with no thought as to the history and development of the area over the centuries.

...and finally...
...
like Richard, I do hope those of you who have been away have enjoyed your holidays and I also look forward to seeing you on 21 September. Meanwhile, you may have noticed that this month's NEWSLETTER is a tad earlier than usual - that's because tomorrow I shall be jetting off to Hungary for 7 days with the 40+ intrepid members of our BUDAPEST 2017 Tour Group.

See you soon and Viszontlátásra!!!

With best wishes
