D1.jobs: A new opportunities below at USC Upstate, Monmouth, Oklahoma & Texas Tech. Advertise your team openings in the same space where thousands of administrators start their mornings. Click here to learn more.
New Mexico AD Nuñez put on the red jacket during his official intro presser in Albuquerque yesterday, "We are going to continue to be great here at UNM. 'Continue,' because UNM is not broken, and I want everyone to understand that." Further, the new Lobos boss says budget issues will get rectified in "the right way," will spend his first 30 to 60 days assessing the staff, though he will be pushing to hire a new CFO as soon as possible, "We're going to fix this together." Compensation details: $365K annually with $35K in possible incentives, five-year deal, buyout looks like $150K. (link); Full presser video here. (link)
Auburn AD Jacobs comments on the Title IX investigation surrounding his Softball program, "I've got complete confidence in our Title IX office and I think they did a thorough investigation and when they developed the facts, action was taken and Corey was no longer part of the team. I just have confidence in them. They started the investigation and they're going to finish it. I just have confidence in them. So, the results are the facts." Further, Jacobs says he can't offer perspective on why Executive Assoc. AD Jenkins may have told student-athletes to delete pictures & text message or risk arrest, "I wasn't there. I know that that's been reported by some and everybody has their opinion of what went on but I don't have anything to speak to about that. I wasn't there." Adds that he won't discuss Jenkins' personnel situation in detail. The university releases a statement & says it was "unable to confirm it because the individual involved denied the allegations. We understand the reluctance of the student-athlete to initially go on record given the circumstances surrounding the allegation." (link); Former Tigers Softball student-athlete Nemeth says former AC Myers was around the program even after his resignation, "He showed up all the time. Even after he cleaned out his office, we’d still see his car in the parking lot and see him around the McWhorter Center." (link)
Kansas State AD Taylor says there were moments in last weekend's FB home-opener where reality hit him & realized, "Oh yea, I'm the athletic director here. This is kind of cool." Taylor also promotes his methodical way of doing business, "My personality is one to kind of learn and listen. I have found that to be effective. I have a tendency to come in and listen and learn for six, seven, eight months and then formulate a plan about what our next steps are going to be. That will be my plan here, too." Vows not to be complacent, but learned at North Dakota State that coming right in & shaking things up isn't needed in all situations. Points to a strong administrative staff as another reason there's time to chart the right course. (link)
Former headlining SEC Commish Slive will now be the namesake of a push to combat prostate cancer with the Mike Slive Foundation for Prostate Cancer Research. Slive, who battled through a year of chemo, radiation & two spine surgeries to defeat the cancer, says he never doubted he'd win because, "that's what you learn from being in athletics all your life." Slive's daughter, Colonnade Group CMO Slive Harwood, serves on the foundation's board & provides context, "Prostate cancer is where breast cancer was 25 years ago. People don't talk about it. Men really don't want to talk about it. One of our objectives is to change that dialogue." (link)
The Star-Telegram's Engel takes stock of the Longhorn Network against the backdrop of a downturn in FB & other sports program success for Texas, wonders how the Longhorns "managed to blow the advantage as the only Division I university with its own 24-hour TV channel dedicated to its own athletic department is one of the most impressive feats in college athletics." While Engel takes a decidedly harsh angle, he provides interesting competitive & marketplace data - like realignment issues partially connected to LHN & its 'elephant in the room' status when mentioning a Big 12 Network play - in calling it "an ambitious, yet poor, business decision, because, well .. it always was. One school is not enough, not even one as big as Texas." (link)
Yahoo's Thamel took a snooze in Clemson's FB nap room, yet it sounds like the Tigers could use even more bunks & recliners to accommodate the sleep needs of its student-athletes (don't worry, more are coming next year). Interestingly, "(HC) Swinney is known to call out players who don’t sleep enough. There’s no punishment, he says, just encouragement to maximize sleep." Swinney notes the uptick in nutritionists & mental health professionals engaged in college athletics, wants sleep to get the same focus. (link)
Snodgrass Partners continues to add to its team with notable names, this time it's former DePaul Senior Assoc. AD Statz, who will serve as VP of Collegiate Recruiting. Also, Goff + Marketing's namesake aligns with Snodgrass as an 'Allied Partner.' Steve Snodgrass: "I’ve known Mike from our days together as executive committee colleagues at a leading advertising and marketing agency. He’s a natural visionary and leader. His expertise in sports marketing is second-to-none and I’m honored to welcome him." (link)
Irma + Fires: Birmingham Mayor Bell indicates the city will lose $15K to $20K hosting FIU-Alcorn State & Georgia Southern-New Hampshire at Legion Field. But, "We may be in the same predicament where we would have to depend on another city to help our schools or citizens out. If you want to have good neighbors, you have to be a good neighbor." (link); The unique story of UAB AD Ingram continues as he'll help to play host to the visiting athletic departments after his own family was impacted twice by hurricanes in North Carolina while he was a FB student-athlete at Tennessee. "It’s not about sports. It’s about people helping other people. It’s not more complicated than that." (link); Georgia Southern AD Kleinlein: "The athletic director at UAB, Mark Ingram, the city of Birmingham, all the people associated with Legion Field, have been so accommodating. It literally was a conversation of this is what I’m thinking, and Mark said ‘Come on, let’s go.'" (link); Speaking of helping others, Teamworks is opening up its mass communications & emergency location platform to any & all throughout the challenge of Irma. Doesn't matter if you're a current client or not. Anyone can leverage the tools. (link); FIU AD Garcia gave all 400 Panther student-athletes the option of traveling to Birmingham with the FB program for temporary arrangements. 170 took him up on the offer & are in the same hotel. (link); Wisconsin brass have offered FAU the option of sticking around in Madison for as long as they need to after today's FB title with the Badgers picking up the tab. (link); Kicks at Eastern Washington, Oregon & Oregon State will be played at regularly scheduled times today as air quality has improved in the Pacific Northwest. (link)
Experiencing the World presented by Anthony Travel
More on the journey of USC blind long-snapper Olson, who was born with retinoblastoma, a form of eye cancer, and at age 12 lost his sight, pens for ESPN on his FB experiences. "Resilience is a powerful trait, but needs a backbone of strong supporters. As shown through my story, together they can accomplish the impossible." Olson says he still wants to snap against a live rush, but his biggest goal is to "capitalize on my golfing skills and plan on the PGA Tour." (link)

Former Alabama/Texas A&M FB HC Stallings is the latest to take critical exception to how current Aggies boss Sumlin is being treated in College Station. On comments by AD Woodward & regent Buzbee, "Anytime we get involved with that, we sort of step out of bounds just a little bit, not that we don't have the authority to do it. That puts tremendous pressure on Sumlin. I think it was a mistake. I think it was a mistake by the athletic director to say winning eight games wasn't enough." Stallings, a former TAMU regent himself, "Our main responsibility as a board member is hiring a president and making policy. […] Presidents hire an Athletic Director. The Athletic Director hires coaches." (link)
Bryant AD Smith starts an "Athletic Director's Corner" series, starts by hyping a bunch of strong academic metrics for his Bulldogs, "Our upward trajectory has been consistent since our transition to Division I nine years ago, and this record of academic success can be attributed not only to innovative programs such as Goal-Based Study Hall and others put forth by the Academic Center for Excellence but also to the support of our academic advisors, coaches, and incredible faculty." Adds that while sport programs continue to strive for success on courts & fields of play, "educational advancement and academic achievement remain at the forefront of what we stand for at Bryant." (link)
HC Notes: Kentucky Baseball HC Mingione gets a bump from $425K to $575K after leading the Wildcats to a Super Regional in his first year at the helm in Lexington. Mingione could earn another $25K for a another Regional appearance, $100K for another trip to the Supers & $150K for a berth in Omaha. (link); Sounds like Kentucky's Baseball ACs were also rewarded with multi-year deals. D1Baseball's Rogers: "Had a couple of premier assistants tell me @UKBaseball's new multi-year deals w/ assistants was unheard of and 'extremely impressive.'" (link, link); Longtime Villanova Softball HC DiBernardi will make the upcoming season her last after 34 years leading the Wildcats. DiBernardi currently ranks 40th all-time in HC wins at 853. (link)
Details emerge around the sexual assault investigation that includes former & suspended NC State FB student-athletes as search warrants in the case were released. Alcohol & marijuana involved. Wolfpack FB HC Doeren with an updated statement, "I continue to respect due process and understand these are the allegations that led to the investigation. These student-athletes remain suspended from competition until conclusion of the investigation. As I said previously, I will be firm, but fair when it comes to discipline. We have a team full of young men committed to representing our university with integrity and respect." (link)
LSU Women's Tennis will enact a 30-day recruiting suspension, a one-week practice hiatus & prospective student-athletes will not be allowed to hit in the Tigers indoor facility after the NCAA accepted the self-imposed penalties in connection to violations. Continuing Compliance education also part of the play for co-HCs Sell & Sell. AD Alleva: "Julia and Michael are terrific coaches and honorable people. We're also going to learn from this for the future and be accountable with these self-imposed penalties." (link)
TV/OTT/Entertainment: Not a good ratings start for the NFL as Thursday night's Patriots-Chiefs kick did a 12.6 household rating, down 14% year over year. A potential culprit: Coverage of Hurricane Irma as The Weather Channel generated big marks. (link); Important, especially on the heels of losing out on Indian Premier League cricket rights, reports from the Wall Street Journal indicate Facebook is ready to pour $1B into original TV programming to support its Watch effort. (link); Interesting read from Business Insider's McAlone, who uses new analysis from UBS to speculate that Disney will need 32M subscribers at $9/month to break even on its new OTT service. Includes the ESPN effort under a $500M line item. (link); Showtime is reportedly interested in the UFC's big package. (link); Solid read by The Atlantic's  Thompson on why box office results for movies have gone in the tank this summer. Thompson lays out the shortfall on a declining trend over time, not a one-year cliff-drop. Important to understand in the overall context of how consumers spend discretionary income, the same money they may lay out to attend one of your games. (link)
MANDTVR: VR & 360-Degree Experiences
Man, look at the smiles on the faces of Oklahoma AD Castiglione & Ohio State boss Smith during an interview yesterday in advance of tonight's primetime FB match-up in Columbus (somebody is excited!). Smith calls hiring the right HCs "the juice," Castiglione agrees, points to some hires the two have made from each other's AC ranks. (link); Smith also said yesterday he doesn't foresee the Buckeyes playing Big Ten FB games on Friday nights, "If you’re running a network, would you put us on Friday night or Saturday?" Overall, still supports the idea for the betterment of the league. (link)
BYU AD Holmoe spoke at the university's Management Society Moral & Ethical Leadership Conference, says he does not see athletics ever being eliminated in Provo like they have been at BYU-Hawaii & BYU-Idaho. On the institution's Honor Code, "Ninety-eight percent of the people at BYU, they love the Honor Code, they want the Honor Code. That’s why they go to BYU. They want it. It’s safe, it’s clean, it’s beautiful. People love that. … I just don’t think you can have it both ways. I don’t think you can use it as a strength and then try to come back and say, 'That really hurts us.'" (link)
South Alabama dropped a decision to Oklahoma State last night on the gridiron, but getting the Pokes to travel to Mobile was a win for Jags AD Erdmann. The kick was part of a 2-for-1 & saw USA pay OSU $300K. Erdmann: "The way I kind of look at a two-for-one is you get a home-and-home. You take our home game and one of the away games at Stillwater, and it’s a home-and-home. You know what I mean? […] I’m not sure if we’ll do it again, unless circumstances change. But we think that this particular game and this particular date is a great opportunity." (link); Western Michigan AD Beauregard will focus on match-ups with 'Power 5' in the midwest for future FB schedules. (link)
Howard's trip to & subsequent win at UNLV wasn't just your standard guarantee game as the Rebels are in the midst of a three-year stretch of agreements with HBCU programs to open their seasons. The Las Vegas Convention & Visitors Authority chips in $300K annually of the $600K guarantee payments & puts tougher additional programming & appearances for the HBCU programs & bands. Convention & Visitors Authority chairman Weekly is a Grambling State alum & looks at the series as a way to diversify the city's tourism. (link)
More momentum to bring back 'Lady Vols' at Tennessee comes from gubernatorial candidate Fitzhugh. "This is a brand, just like the Volunteer State is Tennessee's brand. If they were going to do away with it, I think it would have been better just to do away with it all. Now we have this bifurcated thing that really doesn't work for anybody." The state's Governor is the de facto chair of UT's board of trustees. (link); Illinois AD Whitman & Chancellor Jones met with the university's trustees earlier in the week to discuss if the pair should have discussed the removal of the 'war chant' at athletic events with the board before enacting the change. (link)
Also Noticed: USA Today's Berkowitz reminds who's earning the most with guarantee games today. Those at or above $1M: Fresno State (at Alabama - $1.4M), Cincinnati (at Michigan - $1.2M), Florida Atlantic (at Wisconsin - $1.2M), Nebraska (at Oregon - $1M) & San Jose State (at Texas - $1M). More. (link); Looks like WME-IMG acquired the remaining portion of the Fertitta's ownership (5.8%) of the UFC earlier in the week in a deal that values the brand at $5B. (link); Longtime Georgia Communications guru Felton says today's FB match-up at Notre Dame is one of the toughest tickets he's seen in a long time. (link); The Big East will host its third annual Freshmen Fundamentals program later this month in NYC in an event somewhat modeled after the NBA's Rookie orientation program. (link); Snapchat is starting to add campus newspapers to its Discover vertical in an effort to win more college students. (link)
