In the technology world, the idea work-life balance is thrown around a lot.

But in Silicon Valley, working nine to five is apparently something that losers do. If you're not all in, you' not in at all. [link]

That's not my personal approach, highlighted by the fact that I take long summer vacations. I think giving yourself time to breathe, relax and think makes us more creative, engaged and motivated.

I was struck by the concept of balance while reading Lawrence Levy's terrific book, To Pixar and Beyond. After leaving Pixar, Levy decides to find something new to expand his horizons. He lands upon something called "Middle Way", a philosophy that balances creativity and personal freedom with structure and being grounded.

Personally, I don't believe life needs to be about extremes. It's about balance, empathy, being in the moment, family, and doing the best you can.

For more thoughts, check out this speech by ex-Coca Cola CEO Bryan Dyson, and this podcast featuring 37 Signals' Jason Fried, who talks about less work, more production.
