COR Update SEPT 11-17
Pastor's Message
09/11/2017

We need your help for an all-church work day, if you are available for all or part of the day on Saturday, September 16, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. We will be cleaning and painting the school section of the church building. (Please enter the door by the school playground, because we are also hosting Shannon Sattler’s wedding that day.) If you know how to clean, or how to do any of the stages of painting, we need your help!

We will provide lunch for anyone who is working midday. If you are able to bring salad or desserts or help set up or clean up, please phone the office or bring the items to church.

If you can’t come Saturday but are willing to stop by church and do a cleaning or prepping project or bring food, please contact the church office to see what remains on the “to do” list.  The paint, however, is still being purchased this week.

I feel grateful to God to have the need for your help, because the very same day that Pewaukee Montessori moved out, another school came to tour our space after worship service. They are on a month-to-month lease and are interested in moving in immediately after we can clean, paint and replace the flooring. We are currently seeking bids to replace the flooring.

This school is thriving – you can take a virtual tour of its current space here:  http://www.lcmschool.org or
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P0TtM_x-x88&feature=youtu.be.

This is marvelous provision, and God deserves our praise!

Mission of the Month

SOPHIA (Stewards of Prophetic, Hopeful, Intentional Action) is a faith-based social justice organization in Waukesha County. Nine county organizations join forces as a part of WISDOM, which is the state-wide organization. Issues the organizations have worked on are prison treatment programs for people convicted of alcohol and drug offenses, affordable housing, immigration issues and health care. The Lutheran faith has had a tradition of carrying out God’s work through the social issues of the time. Financial contributions to SOPHIA help support the organizer and communicate the issues with members and the general public.

Living with Grief

On Saturday, September 23, Chaplain Guta Cvetkovic will join us to speak in our church service about love and grief. Following the service, you are invited to participate in a potluck dinner, hear a brief presentation about grief, receive a “mourner’s bill of rights,” and converse with one another about living with grief.

Guta is a professional chaplain at Capitol Lakes Retirement Community (a continual care organization in Madison) and a certified grief specialist. He is also Pastor Paula’s beloved spouse.

Distribution of Bibles

Attention 3rd-grade students and parents. On September 10th, we will distribute Bibles to parents of 3rd-graders. We ask parents to highlight favorite or meaningful verses. On September 24, parents should bring the Bible to church where they will present it to their child during worship.

A Need in the Nursery

Hello all!  I am writing to inform you of changes in the nursery in the upcoming months. Due to the number of families with young children attending our 8:30 and 10:00 services, it was suggested we staff the nursery at both times. Unfortunately, this change was not part of the budget at the beginning of the year.

We are looking to raise $450 to fill this position.  With all of the young families at our church, it is in our best interest to stabilize this with a paid person who will be there on a consistent basis. Please prayerfully consider donating to help us.

Prayer Request Update

Have you updated Pastor Paula or the church office on your prayer requests recently? We pray for many people every week on our prayer list. Have some of your loved ones been healed, or are they in remission?  Have some passed on to be with the Lord? Do you have praises to add? We’d like to know
Adult Bible Class

Did you know that for many years Church of the Resurrection adults have met at 6:30 am on Thursdays for Bible study?

We have. Usually this class is led by our pastors, but in this interim period it is led mainly by Dennis Faherty.

We are now studying Paul’s letter to the Galatians. This book was one of Martin Luther's favorites because of its clarity of justification through faith. It's not only about Bible study, though — we get great socialization and good coffee and pastry.

We meet the first, third, and fifth Thursdays of the month at This Great Coffee Place in Hartland at 6:30 am.

Would you like to join us? Send an e-mail to johnkornely@gmail.com or talk to John Kornely, Dennis Faherty, Dave or Betty Groenewold, Phil or Barb Salstrom, Steve Meyer, Dick Manke, Matt Stein or Bob Vilar. We would like you to join us.

Who does the laundry in your home?

Our acolytes can’t possibly look as happy as this girl, because their robes are really dirty. We need some cheerful parents, grandparents, or friendly folks who are willing to take a handful of robes home to wash and bring them back before Sunday services (we use the robes at both 8:30 and 10 am worship). They’re polyester and easy to wash with other whites — they need a few minutes in the dryer to clear out wrinkles, and then they can hang for 24 hours to dry. Can you help?

Are you looking for ways to help with hurricane relief?

Lutheran Disaster Response ordinarily has a very high percentage of donations that are forwarded to the cause. But for the hurricanes, they have pledged to send on 100 percent of your gift to the needy.

“For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor rulers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
– Romans 8:38-39

Dear friends,
Hurricane Harvey, one of the most powerful storms to hit the United States in years, made landfall last night, threatening millions of our neighbors in Texas and Louisiana with heavy rain, wind and rising tides.                          Click on Button ---->

The National Hurricane Center called the storm’s effects “life-threatening, devastating and catastrophic” and predicted long periods of rain and flooding, along with massive power outages. While many have evacuated, significant damage is still expected, and thousands of people may be housed in shelters for extended periods of time.

We have an opportunity to accompany our neighbors during and after this disaster, in Jesus Christ’s name.

Your gifts are needed now to help those affected by Hurricane Harvey. Your support through Lutheran Disaster Response will bring hope and healing to those who have been or will be affected by this hurricane. Lutheran Disaster Response is already collaborating with our affiliates to initiate recovery efforts.

While the storm is not over, you can help now. Gifts designated for “Hurricane Response – United States” will be used in full until the response is complete to help disaster survivors recover and rebuild.

Stay connected to the latest events and our response to this and other disasters through our Facebook page. Join me in prayer and partnership, and use this bulletin insert in your congregation to help spread the word. You can find additional resources for worship here.

With gratitude,

Bible Study on Confirmation Night
 “The Greatest Story”

This fall, we are bringing back a tried-and-true program for our adult Bible study on Wednesday nights (kids not in Confirmation are also welcome to join). We will be using the program “The Greatest Story: Bible Introduction.” This program is different in that instead of just studying a single book of the Bible, we start in the beginning with Genesis, work our way through the Old Testament, and then move into the New Testament starting with the Gospels all the way through Revelation.

Each participant will have a study guide with which he or she can follow the lesson each week. We begin each week reading about the story for that week. The next part of the lesson is “Picturing the Story,” in which we will watch artist Joe Castillo draw pictures in sand corresponding to the lesson. As you watch the story unfold in the video, there will be some questions to reflect on. The last time we did this program, everyone had so much fun trying to guess what Joe was drawing.

We end each week by “Marking It” – we mark one or more of the passages from that week’s story to read during the coming week. This Bible study tends to be very lively, sparks the imagination and engages participants in some great conversation.

We will be previewing this program during the Confirmation parent orientation on August 30, and the first session will be on Wednesday, September 13 (the first day of confirmation classes).

If you have any questions, please feel free to speak with John Kornely, Pat or Dennis Faherty, or Lisa Schulte. We hope you can join us for this adventurous study of the Bible.

Call Committee Update

Dear Congregation:

Thank you for your thoughts and prayers for our call team. There’s not much new to say because the Synod is currently screening possible candidates for us to interview.

We think it’s important for the congregation to know how incredibly valuable your feedback and efforts have been.

The information provided via the cottage sessions, personal interviews, the Transition Team, and ultimately the ministry profile are the backbone of our sessions. Our productivity and ultimately our results can be directly linked to all your efforts.

Thank you all very much and please continue to monitor our announcements, the newsletter and the website.
