From AthleticDirectorU - Investigating College Basketball's Transfer Movement
2D Consulting's Durham publishes an account of September 11th from the viewpoints of 50 athletic administrators around the nation - one from each of the 50 states - on exactly where they were when they first learned of the attacks, how the day proceeded & how their respective campuses responded. Includes leaders up & down the chain around our industry, from ADs to Commissioners to those at the NCAA office, in DI & DII. Hard to pick just a few out, but NJIT AD Kaplan, who lived just one mile from the World Trade Center, recounts being the only civilian car allowed in the Lincoln Tunnel (a story he says is for another day), then seeing a skyline devoid of the towers for the first time "was a punch to the gut – I only saw smoke where the buildings once stood." Lots more. (link)
Charlene Sumlin, wife of Texas A&M FB HC Kevin, in connection to the inappropriate letter addressed to her home last week, "They have run forensics and are investigating. They asked us if we wanted to press charges and I couldn't answer answer 'YES, TO THE FULLEST EXTENT OF THE LAW' fast enough. I want to make an example of this person. I want everyone to understand that I will do anything and everything to PROTECT MY FAMILY. Period. I literally cannot wait to look this person eye to eye. There is a real unique kind of cowardice in someone to anonymously criticize, ridicule or threaten another person. If I have the opportunity to expose even ONE TROLL. I am going to do it." (link)
Irma: Florida Atlantic FB took the day off in Madison yesterday, await word on when they can return to Boca Raton. Owls HC Kiffin says his squad will do whatever the administration thinks is best. FAU is due to face Bethune Cookman in Boca this coming Saturday. (link); As of Saturday, Florida AD Stricklin said no decisions had been made about this weeks FB match-up with Tennessee. (link); Illinois FB is due to travel to USF for a kick that could be switched to Champaign. (link); UCF-Georgia Tech in Orlando is still a "go" at the moment. (Iink); South Carolina AD Tanner has leveraged the Student Assistance Fund to aid those in his programs who are from the state of Florida. (link); Inside Higher Ed with a good look at universities across Florida, Georgia, Alabama & South Carolina that remain closed. (link)
Experiencing the World presented by Anthony Travel
Some reports last week indicated Georgia FB's match-up against Notre Dame was the program's first north of the Mason Dixon Line since 1965. While that turns out to not technically be true (Colorado's Folsom Field sits just north of the delineator & UGA played at CU in 2010), Bulldogs fans flooded South Bend & provided a solid base of support for the key victory. Dawgs HC Smart says QB Fromm did not have to change his cadence, a common occurrence at away SEC kicks, because so many UGA supporters made it into Notre Dame Stadium. Further, Smart gets a fundraising plug in, "We've got a lot of projects right now that we're trying to pay for, and these are the kind of games that help you get that done, because they see the promise in the program." (link)

West Virginia AD Lyons continues his series of Q&As with The Exponent Telegram, notes how much time is dedicated to personnel issues for he & Deputy AD Zinn given a department of 250-300 staff. Lyons says he's changed his attitude on multi-year contracts for ACs given national trends, likes neutral site FB opportunities, but not every year as he & HC Holgorsen look for balance. Is not comfortable scheduling all the way out into the late 2020s in order to leave flexibility in the event of marketplace changes, wants to keep Pitt on the slate "as long as we can," notes the MBB series with Marshall in Charleston was discontinued for a number of reasons, including fan dissatisfaction. (link); Lyons added earlier in the week that if Mountaineers FB ever plays a neutral match-up at FedEx Field again, the deal will have to include parking lots opening up much earlier to avoid a traffic crunch. (link)
Ole Miss' date with the Committee on Infractions starts this morning at 830a EST in a Covington, KY hotel. From a scheduling standpoint, The Clarion-Ledger's Morales indicates, "two-to-three days to go through all 21 allegations, which include 15 Level I violations, alleged against the university from the NCAA enforcement staff’s most recent Notice of Allegations." Morales runs through the timeline of events that have led to today's meeting, key figures involved & believes one of the worst possible outcomes is a two-year postseason ban for FB. More. (link)
ESPN's College GameDay is headed back to Louisville, though the set & show will originate from Grawemeyer Hall on campus, in front of the famous "Thinker" statue, not from Papa John's Cardinal Stadium this time. Cards AD Jurich says his fans deserve all the credit. The Louisville-Clemson kick has been pushed back into primetime at 8p with the reschedule of Miami-Florida State. (link); Here's a full listing of next week's FB TV schedule from expert Sarzyniak, though more changes seem likely. (link)
Fox Sports EVP Mulvihill tweets on solid TV ratings numbers for college FB over the weekend & year to date, "Add up all yesterday's CFB overnights and Week 2 viewing was up +24% across six networks. Schedule quite a bit better than last year IMO. That CFB viewing was up doesn't mean Irma had no impact. Cable news + Weather Channel up more than 200% over last year all day and night. Through Week 2 total College Football viewing on FOX/FS1 up +159% based on overnights. CFB up +10% across 6 networks thru Week 2." (link); As you might expect, the Oklahoma-Ohio State matchup generates top marks for the weekend at an overnight of 5.3. More hype data from ESPN's Volner included on the Worldwide Leader's slate of games. (link); Ratings for the NFL this weekend will have to wait as Nielsen's main data centers are located in Tampa. (link)
SB Nation CougCenter's Floyd on Washington State's performance Saturday against Boise State in the 47-44 double OT Cougar victory: "Which brings us to Saturday night in Pullman, where Washington State flailed around for 42 minutes before all hell [broke] loose. I've seen dumb, ridiculous things watching this team in the middle of the night — it's been a somewhat unexpected part of that brand of football. What happened on Saturday night, though ... well, it was probably the dumbest. .. This is what we signed up for when [AD] Moos signed [HC] Leach. There will be moments of frustration and inexplicable mistakes. There will be blowouts when the offense clicks, and comebacks where they dig out of a hole. And if there's just enough defense to keep the offense around — and there was plenty of defense on Saturday night — you never know what you're going to get." (link)
MANDTVR: VR & 360-Degree Experiences
Tennessee AD Currie Q&As with the Volunteer Review, continues to underscore the importance of staying true to the goal: "Sometimes, we have to ask ourselves, 'Is this really core to our mission?' Part of our mission is winning, One of our five mission goals is to win championships, so we should be asking that question to ourselves when we make decisions." As for the role students play in that pursuit: "Students impact their own personal brand and the brand of their university by being present and being loud, and we will continue to do what we can to support our students in that regard and making it as easy as possible for them to prioritize that time at our ball games." More. (link)
Straight from the Mountain West: Midway through Facebook's six-game MW football package, the three games have averaged more than 889,000 views, including 1.3M views during the New Mexico State-New Mexico contest last Saturday. The 1.3M views are the most views on a single Facebook broadcast to date. Additionally, the Rio Grande Rivalry recorded more than 7,800 comments during the broadcast. This year, Facebook has a 15-game package (9 C-USA games and 6 MW games). The first Facebook produced MW game had just over 510,000 views. In two weeks, the views have grown by more than 700,000.
It is now possible to send out a Tweetstorm - a string of tweets - all at once, according to The Next Web's Social Media Director Navarra, though the feature is not yet live in Twitter's app. More context from Recode's Bhuiyan: "Twitter frequently experiments with new features — some of which are never publicly released — that simplify user behavior the company sees on the app." (link)
Around Higher Ed: Inside Higher Ed points out that many of the policies on campus sexual assault investigations are enshrined in law, and therefore unable to be changed by U.S. Education Secretary DeVos. (link); Alabama State selects three-time alum Sen. Ross from a group of four finalists to be the school's next president. In addition to being a Democratic member of the state Senate since 2002, a position he must now resign, Ross is a manager and consultant for postsecondary education with the Alabama Education Association. (link); Louisville will spend $170K to find the permanent replacement for former Prez Ramsey with the intent of using William Funk & Associates through June 30, 2018. (link); Purdue Prez Daniels gets to decide who will be IPFW's new chancellor. now that the chancellor search committee has narrowed the group to four finalists: IPFW VC for Academic Affairs and Enrollment Management Drummond, Purdue's Chief Corporate and Global Partnerships Officer Hirleman Jr., Youngstown State's Provost and Chief Academic Officer Abraham, and UT Arlington Interim Provost and VP for Academic Affairs Elsenbaumer. No timeline on the announcement, but current Chancellor Carwein has already announced her retirement for the end of the year. (link); The University of New Mexico's faculty seeks a delay in the school's presidential search, citing the "disruptive effect" of a change in leadership. The group is instead asking "in the strongest possible terms" that interim Prez Abdallah's contract be extended an extra year, through the spring of 2019. For his part, Abdallah remains uninterested in the permanent post, but would be willing to extend his interim service. (link)
Also Noticed: Notable weekly columns recapping the weekend of FB come from Yahoo's Forde as he writes on the rise of the Big 12 & fall of the SEC West (link), as well as USA Today's Wolken with his 'Misery Index.' (link); Two games in, two FB DCs already dismissed: Missouri & ECU. (link, link); Details around the new iPhone have, of course, been leaked. Sounds like the names will be iPhone 8, 8 Plus & X.  Also, looks like the Apple Watch will now be able to make calls over LTE, plus more nuances. We'll know more tomorrow with Apple's scheduled announcement. (link, link)
1.Question brought to you Turnkey Search
For all the craziness in Pullman on Saturday night/Sunday morning, Washington State AD Bill Moos previously chatted with 1.Q on the increase of premium seating areas in new construction, the operation of regional fundraising offices, and a discussion about the success ratio of fundraisers who have spent time in a regional office (including Moos’ advice to those generating dollars in cities away from their home campus).
