Supporting whānau to live life a little better, together
An area of work that Sport Wellington is involved in is encouraging and supporting whānau to get active, eat well and spend more time together. We do this through our free Green Prescription Active Families programme, where whānau meet with one of our team members to discuss the changes they feel would benefit them and then we support them with resources, advice, food workshops and link them into supportive local networks.

When a child is overweight they are at an increased risk of physical and physiological challenges that impact their ability to move, play and grow up to be healthy adults.  We want to be part of positive change and currently prioritise our support for children in whānau who are Māori, Pasifika and overweight.

If you or a whānau you know are concerned about a child’s health, weight or would benefit from a kōrero with us then please get in touch. We are also available to attend events and run workshops on healthy lifestyle topics of interest.

SportStart teacher workshop
You can lead a teacher to SportStart but you can’t make them teach? Or can you?

Teachers from seven of our current schools recently attended a SportStart workshop with the aim of heading back to their schools with lots of new ideas to pass on to their teachers and continue their SportStart journey.

Brain exercise activities

Brain exercise activities serve as a way to increase communication between the two hemispheres of the brain. When brain signals are passed from one side to the other quickly, the brain is able to function more efficiently.
Anytime the left and right side of our bodies work simultaneously or one side of our body crosses the midline over to the other side, the brain is compelled to send a signal from one side to the other. The more times we do this, the stronger these connections become.

Health and physical education for year 7/8

Accredited Educational Facilitator, Libby Paterson, is back with another contribution targeted at health and physical education for teachers of year 7 & 8 students.

Included in Libby's article are some useful resources such as EOTC guidelines and safety management plan templates, along with ideas to incorporate into the classroom for Maori Language Week (11-17 September).

Find the article here.
Perception checks
Do you ever think about how you approach a situation, why you see what you see, and what the potential impact of this could be? In terms of child development, what is your role as an early childhood educator? Are the opportunities you provide children allowing them to reach their potential? Are the movement opportunities you are providing children purposeful or out of habit?

Here is a video that may challenge your perceptions.
More resources

Have a look on our website for more quality movement ideas to try. Challenge yourself to take a perception check and try these activities out while being inclusive of all children (notwithstanding the need to modify the activities for the children’s developmental needs).

Wellington Regional SportsFest 2017
The 3rd annual SportsFest was another fun-filled sporting experience for approximately 3,000 Year 5-8 students from the Wellington region who competed in 333 teams from 52 schools over 2 days of sports tournaments. The teams competed in 11 different sports across 8 venues with a focus on fun, friendship and fairplay. SportsFest is a partnership between Wellington City Council, Primary Sport Wellington, 11 Regional Sports Organisations and ASB Bank, with funding from Lion Foundation for the facility hire.

Olympic Ambassadors Sarah Cowley-Ross and Peter Taylor circulated around the various venues to encourage the players and present trophies at the prize-givings. Irene Van Dyk and Ben Sigmund also assisted with the netball and football prize-givings.

SportsFest provides the opportunity for children to learn new skills, make new friends and have fun while being physically active. Students also get the chance to compete in sports they may not have tried before, and to play against schools they normally wouldn’t play against.
SportsFest - report from Porirua Primary Schools Sports Advisor
Porirua had four schools representing the area at the recent Regional Sports Festival and it was great to see the children from Corinna, Rangikura, Tairangi and Windley schools competing at a high standard at the Festival.

Click here to find out what they did.
Wairarapa Cross Country
Cross country is an annual event on most schools calendar. Schools have a pathway from their event to zone, interzone and for some fast runners, the Regional Cross Country event.

For the really competitive, there is even an inter-regional event to aspire to. Read more to find how the Wairarapa schools have been engaged in this event.
