What’s New in Calcbench

Special report: software sector and revenue recognition. Public companies must adopt a sweeping new accounting standard for revenue recognition starting next year. This month, Calcbench takes a close look at the software sector—where numerous companies are likely to experience material changes in the timing and nature of revenue flows. We identify probable targets, and see what they’ve been disclosing so far. Read the report now.

How to view data in other currencies. This month’s pro tip: a small feature added to our Company-in-Detail database, to let you view financial numbers in any of 24 foreign currencies. It’s fast and comprehensive. See how it works.

How to compare footnote disclosures in different periods. OK, we lied—this month we offer two pro tips. On our Interactive Disclosure database, which lets you search the footnote disclosures that companies make, we also have a simple “Add Previous Period” tab that lets you see the same disclosure the company made in the prior period. See how this works, too.

Building a portfolio income statement. Attention financial analysts and investors out there: we built a model to show what the income statement of your portfolio companies would look like, if those companies filed one consolidated Form 10-K. With the financial data we collect and standardize, projects like that are a breeze. See our samples inside, and how it works.

Geeking Out on the Data

Health of the health insurers. Amid the fierce debate over healthcare reform, and everyone’s favorite pastime of griping about health insurance, we took a look at revenue and operating income at nine large, for-profit insurers in the United States, 2013 to 2016. The brisk growth they had enjoyed in early years has slowed recently, and operating margins are getting tighter. Take a look at what we found.

Business services sector: key metrics. This month we bring another sector update from our crack Calcbench research department, examining financial trends in the business services sector. Our sample of more than 300 firms shows revenue up 32 percent in five years, although nearly half of that increase is concentrated among five large firms. We also look at net income, capital equipment spending, and more. Read more.
