Republican Primary September 12 (Absentee Ballots Mailed by Today, Sept. 5)

Please vote in the primary in Lyndonville on September 12 if you are a registered Republican. We are supporting Harold Suhr and Jim Whipple in the Republican primary and Jim Simon in the general election. This is a critical election so if you are registered as a Republican we encourage you to vote in the Primary. If you are a Yates Republican and want to vote by absentee ballot remember that your application for an absentee ballot must be mailed by TODAY, Tuesday September 5. If you do not have an application for absentee ballot you can download and print one here: http://www.elections.ny.gov/NYSBOE/download/voting/Absentee06152010.pdf The other option for absentee ballot would be to stop by the Orleans County Board of Elections in Albion during business hours.

Community Outreach

SOS has been on the move this summer. It was good to see familiar faces and new ones at our booths in Albion for the Strawberry Festival, 4^th of July in Lyndonville and at the Niagara County Fair in Lockport. The new scale model of a wind turbine next to a two-story house received a great deal of notice and more models have been made. Look for them in local businesses in the coming months. Our thanks to Jim Bansbach for his careful attention to detail in creating the models. If you know of a business that has sufficient space and would be willing to have a model in an area where customers will see it, let us know. SOS representatives have been meeting with groups from Niagara Falls to Rochester. Our educational materials have helped people better understand the issues associated with industrial wind in this location.

Wildlife in the Project Area

Promoting wildlife and bird habitat has been an important message this summer. This has been an exciting summer for birders. Several unusual species have been observed by birders in the area near the lake, including a Ruff, a Dickcissel, and an Upland Sandpiper. In the area closer to the Iroquois Wildlife Refuge a Peregrine Falcon and a Glossy Ibis have been seen, as well as bald eagles and ospreys, and were reported in the local press.

Fundraising

Our most recent fundraiser at the White Birch in Lyndonville drew well over 100 people and was an outstanding success as well as a lot of fun. Great music was provided by Elijah Simon and Mike McCauley. Thank you to all the SOS supporters who donated baskets, food, baked goods and organizational time and effort to make the evening memorable.

Town News and Activity

In other news, the one MET(meteorological) tower in the town of Yates has been removed at the request of the town board. The permit was for two years and it had expired. We appreciate the swift action taken by the board. The other tower is currently in the hearing phase. Learn more at the upcoming Yates town board meetings. Please attend the Yates and Somerset Town Board Meetings when you can. Additionally, there are other towns in the area that may be targeted for industrial wind turbines as an expansion of or support of the Lighthouse Wind project. If you are able to attend one of the town board meetings in our area and report back any related information it would be appreciated. This is often the first public step for a wind developer, so please consider attending in Hartland, Ridgeway, Shelby, Royalton, or even in Albion or Barre where the Heritage Wind project may be discussed.

Apex recently held a dinner in Medina saying that they intend to begin construction of both the Heritage Wind and Lighthouse Wind projects in 2020. Originally they intended to have Lighthouse Wind up and running by 2017. Your efforts have put them way behind schedule. Let’s keep up the good work.

Other Industrial Wind Projects in New York

Hearings have begun for the Cassadaga Wind project, one of three wind projects planned for Chautauqua County and the first to go through the Article 10 process. Some interesting testimony from evidentiary hearings is available on the DPS website and more will be forthcoming.

The Horse Creek Project in Upstate New York has been withdrawn due to lack of adequate transmission capability to get the electricity to areas that need it. The NY Independent Systems Operator has indicated that transmission capability is an issue in Western New York as well. The corporation planning the Horse Creek project may resubmit a smaller project.

Many were frustrated by the recent pro-wind coverage in the Lockport Union-Sun Journal and Your Hometown Extra. A rebuttal was published in the Journal on August 25, a careful reasoned response written by Kate Kremer and Pam Atwater. Thank you for your continued support.
