Welcome to the "Fall"

Oops, we are a little late this month. We hope everyone had a wonderful summer break. As we all trudge back to work or school, let us not forget to remember those who have not had a respite - our hearts and thoughts go out to those affected by the hurricanes in Texas, typhoons and floods across Asia, the earthquakes in Italy, Mexico and China, and wildfires across Europe and America.

We need to reflect on the way we treat our planet and our environment. The Ellen Macarthur Foundation predicts that plastic waste will outweigh fish in our oceans by 2050. As convenient as single-use plastics are, they are a threat, and they will find a way into our food chains. Whilst we cannot contain natural shifts like wind patterns or earth movements, we can and should look at our own behaviours and how they affect the way we live. Rant over. Read on. :-)

This month, we are celebrating the achievements of one of our longstanding education partners, IADM-STEP, and the cutting-edge work they have been doing in the creative industries in Pakistan. There will be an alumni get-together in Malaysia, plus Dr Vernon Burger's new book.

IADM-STEP End-of-Year Displays

We are proud of our association with the Institute of Art, Design and Management in Lahore, Pakistan. WCI provides special top-up degree programs in Fashion Design, Textile Design, Interior Design, Graphic Design and Business Administration. With IADM, WCI is helping to raise the bar of creativity in Pakistan, and our students' work is testament of this. Below is some of the amazing work on show at the recent graduate displays. Check out their latest video too (our own Dr J makes a cameo at the end).

Vernon Burger's New Book

Vernon Burger II is the founder of His Voice Global. His Voice aims to restore relationships and renew communities by focusing on orphans, vulnerable children, widows, and church leaders in South Sudan, Kenya and India. Vernon graduated with his MA at WC in 2013, and completed his PhD in the History of Ideas in 2016. He worked with Dr Noor Mazhar.
Now, Vernon has just released a new book entitled "Imprisoned to Hope: Forgiveness as a Form of Lament". In it, he presents the idea that faith is not just about belief, it can include lamenting over pain and doubt. He argues that forgiveness is, in itself, a form of lament, and that lament leads to hope. It's excellent to see our graduates use the knowledge they have gained in such a practical and topical manner.

Council Member Spotlight: Dr Michael Ange

Dr Ange had extensive experience as a criminal investigator prior to his foray into scuba diving. He holds 160+ international diving certifications at the instructor trainer/master instructor level from 9 different certifying agencies and is a US Coast Guard licensed Master. His PhD research focused on diver training methods and how these prepare divers for responding to critical incidents. He looks forward to help expand the WC vision and philosophy.

Looking Back to Move Forward

Alumni gatherings are a marvellous thing and really quite good for the soul. It brings graduates who have had the shared experience of a Warnborough education together. Pictured above was a gathering at a racecourse in Australia with both Australian and South East Asian alumni.

We have had many alumni functions in Hong Kong and China. It is always a nice opportunity to meet with our many students in this region.

In Europe, we have had alumni events outside of the UK and Ireland too - the photo above shows a networking event in the Lake Balaton region of Hungary.

We launched our first Study Abroad Australia in 1987. This group had their 20th anniversary reunion in New Hampshire, USA in 2008. Next year will be the 30th anniversary, and we are planning to coincide our North American celebrations with theirs.
