2017 Volunteer Party Wrap-up!
Thank you to all who attended our Volunteer Recruitment and Recognition Party! We had many current and former volunteers who shared their stories and insights with each other and potential volunteers who attended the party.
After many years volunteering at the
Whatcom Literacy Council, two tutors will be retiring from teaching. Cat McIntyre and Marty Mitchell have dedicated their time and energy into improving other people’s lives and the overall health of the community through literacy.

Being a volunteer English tutor with the Whatcom Literacy Council inspires tutors to venture onto more opportunities. For example, former WLC tutor Cat, expanded her tutoring by venturing to Prague to earn a TEFL certificate and teach English in Laos.
Through tutoring at the Whatcom Literacy Council, volunteers not only teach the learners, but the leaners teach them in return. Former WLC tutor, Marty Mitchell reflects, "They [learners] all have a story. And you will become part of it. You will hear inspiring stories about their [learners] struggles; why they came here [and] their dreams and aspirations for themselves and their families."
If you would like to become a tutor and become a part of a learner's story,
please visit our website or call our office at 360-752-8678.
THANK YOU to everyone who attended- the event was a success
due to the participation of so many wonderful volunteers!

Devin's lemon bars were quite the hit at the party! Here is her recipe:

Lemon Bar Recipe
1 lemon cake mix (Duncan Hines works best)
1 egg
1/2 cup butter, melted
3 3/4 cups powdered sugar
2 eggs, beaten
8 ounces cream cheese, softened
1 teaspoon vanilla
Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
Mix together cake mix, egg, and butter. Spread into a greased 9 x 13-inch pan.
In a separate bowl, mix together powdered sugar, beaten eggs, softened cream cheese, and vanilla until smooth. Spread mixtures over bottom layer.
Bake 30-40 minutes until the top layer turns a light golden brown.
If you make this recipe, take a picture and share it with us on Facebook or Twitter!
