New Zealand disability policy analysis

Breaking the link between disability and child and whānau poverty

Sam Murray

“In New Zealand, disability allowances are simply too low to effectively reduce the number of disabled children living in poverty. In 2013, the median disability allowance payment rate for disabled children was just $45.62 NZD a week. By comparison, it was $134.36 NZD a week for disabled children in the UK. Even adjusting for purchasing power parity, the UK allowances are far higher.”

Little and loud : my life story

Sharon Davies, QSM

Sharon Davies has been a leader in the disability sector in Auckland for decades. She worked for CCS Auckland for 15 years where 'Sharon's determination had made her what she is today - a lively and fiercely independent young woman who had established her own home, is fully employed, drives her own car and makes all her own decisions." (Access. August 1993) . This book reflects on the friendships that have supported her life  as she made her much valued (QSM!) contribution to the Auckland community. An easy entertaining read with plenty of photos.

Anxiety is really strange

Steve Haines ; art by Sophie Standing

"What is the difference between fear and excitement and how can you tell them apart? How do the mind and body make emotions? When can anxiety be good? This science-based graphic book addresses these questions and more, revealing just how strange anxiety is, but also how to unravel its mysteries and relieve its effects." Amazon.
Information rich, delightfully engaging, but not a children's book; full of tools for self-regulation. Best in the field.

It's just a ... what? : Little sensory problems with BIG reactions

Tags can be a giant, prickly porcupine rubbing a child with sensory issues quite the wrong way. Here's a nicely illustrated children's picture book  that tries to turn down the drama when the goggles are too tight, the sock seams are rubbing, and the clippers are too cutting.

If you are a caregiver to a loved one, the challenge is to avoid "caregiver burnout."  Despite the feelings of guilt and stress that you may feel,  "taking care of yourself is not a luxury; it is an absolute necessity if you're going to be an effective caregiver". And yet its so hard to do! Marrying mindfulness with self-care the book promises to teach us how to become "a more relaxed, focused [and] confident"  caregiver. Sounds good.

Keith Storey

Written by  a legend in the field, the case studies in this book are a really useful way to the see the pathways through the challenges of transition and employment for the people we support. Each case study considers best practices in transition and lists further areas and skills for consideration.
Armed with this text, vocational and transition staff will have a great working knowledge of strategies for successful transition to employment that delivers the outcomes the disabled person wants. Looks like a good book - except for the colour of the cover.
